KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: HITTING: 2B IAN KINSLER will lead off again. A few less at-'em balls and he's an MVP candidate. SS ELVIS ANDRUS is coming along offensively, but his poor SB% could lead to fewer attempts. Injuries are the only thing that will keep OF JOSH HAMILTON out of the MVP discussion. He'll likely start declining at age 35, but DH MICHAEL YOUNG can't help but put up numbers batting cleanup in this lineup. 3B ADRIAN BELTRE was unstoppable in Arlington. Like Hamilton, he's an MVP candidate if healthy. Injuries are piling up for OF NELSON CRUZ, who still has monster power but doesn't run as much anymore. C MIKE NAPOLI is MLB's best offensive catcher and will play some 1B on 'off' days. Because their lineup is stacked, Texas can play defensive-minded/offensively limited 1B MITCH MORELAND. And because Ron Washington would prefer to play Hamilton in left, speedy CF CRAIG GENTRY looks to have the edge over DAVID MURPHY for the starting job in center. Cuban import LEONYS MARTIN will start the season in Triple-A, but JULIO BORBON could earn a significant OF role.
STARTING PITCHING: COLBY LEWIS can overpower when he's on, but as a flyball pitcher in cozy Arlington he's going to have a handful of ugly days. The much-ballyhooed YU DARVISH brings a deep arsenal of pitches and a durable frame from Japan. He's probably the best Japanese arm to ever cross the Pacific. Lefty MATT HARRISON solidified his rotation spot. He has topped out as a respectable No. 3-type starter. DEREK HOLLAND has top-of-the-rotation upside. Consistency has been an issue, but hopefully another year and some big postseason moments helped to cure that. The big story is NEFTALI FELIZ moving to the rotation. He was considered a future ace in the minors, but the transition might not be easy. His K/BB ratio plummeted last year and his flyball tendencies could spell disaster in Arlington. Keep in mind the Rangers made a successful closer-to-ace switch with C.J. Wilson. Top prospect MARTIN PEREZ could be an option in the second half.
RELIEF PITCHING: Veteran JOE NATHAN was brought in and handed the closer's job. He struggled in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but most pitchers who've had the procedure don't come all the way back until their second full season. If Nathan falters, MIKE ADAMS could be next in line. He had no trouble transitioning from pitcher-friendly San Diego in the National League to hitter-friendly Arlington and the A.L.'s superior bats. KOJI UEHARA would also be in the closer discussion if Nathan falters, but he was unhappy about being traded from Baltimore and faltered for the Rangers late last year. ALEXI OGANDO got a huge boost from his defense and his bullpen before a late-season collapse. He threw by far a career-high in innings; better stamina would allow him to take the next step and possibly rejoin the rotation.
MINNESOTA: HITTING: OF BEN REVERE's slap-and-run style fits well in spacious Target Field. He will compete with lefty Chris Parmelee for the starting RF job. OF DENARD SPAN should be over his concussion problems. He works the count well as a steady presence near the top of the order. C JOE MAUER will see more time at first in an attempt to keep him healthy. Offensively, he'll be limited by a pitcher-friendly home park and no support in the lineup. RYAN DOUMIT has a chance to play regularly and stay healthy as a full-time DH and/or backing up Mauer behind the dish. 1B JUSTIN MORNEAU's concussion symptoms came back late last year. It's a bad omen. OF JOSH WILLINGHAM is being relied on to produce runs, but he's going from one pitcher-friendly home park (Oakland) to another. 3B DANNY VALENCIA showed enough power in 2011 to secure an everyday job heading into 2012. Newly signed SS JAMEY CARROLL has done a nice job off the bench, but hasn't been tested in an everyday role. If hamstring problems are still holding him back, 2B ALEXI CASILLA has won the second-base job ahead of disappointing import TSUYOSHI NISHIOKA, who will start the year in the minors.
STARTING PITCHING: Who would have thought CARL PAVANO would emerge as the picture of consistency and durability? While he's far from a star, the veteran continues to be a rock for Minnesota, throwing strikes and eating innings. SCOTT BAKER got hurt again last year. If he could ever stay healthy, he's the prototype for success at Target Field'lots of strikeouts, few walks, lots of flyouts. The FRANCISCO LIRIANO rollercoaster nosedived again last year. The Twins have gotten so desperate to keep him healthy that they actually let him pitch more over the offseason. He's obviously a huge risk again. BRIAN DUENSING, NICK BLACKBURN and JASON MARQUIS are all the definition of fifth starter. They serve it up, give up a lot of hard-hit balls, and hope they get hit right at their defenders. If Duensing and Blackburn falter, ANTHONY SWARZAK probably pitched well enough last year to get a shot in the rotation. LIAM HENDRICKS, one of the organization's better prospects, would be a slightly more exciting option.
RELIEF PITCHING: Despite his underwhelming performance last year, MATT CAPPS will pitch the ninth inning again because of his 'closer's experience.' He figures to be on an undeservedly long leash. GLEN PERKINS certainly proved he deserves to close. He was Minnesota's best reliever in his first full season in the 'pen. His velocity was up as a short reliever, and the lefty was truly overpowering. If things go sour for the Twins again this season (and it seems likely they will), perhaps they'll get serious about Perkins later this year.

*Rangers-Twins Preview* =======================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Texas (14-7) at Minnesota (9-8), 8:10 p.m. EDT

With their lineup locked in and their pitchers on a roll, the Texas Rangers are clicking on all cylinders.

The Rangers try to continue their surge as they open a four-game set against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night at Target Field.

After sweeping Seattle over the weekend, Texas (14-7) kicked off this seven-game trip by taking two of three from the Los Angeles Angels. Yu Darvish struck out 11 over six dominant innings while Nelson Cruz and Lance Berkman both homered and combined for seven RBIs in Wednesday's 11-3 win.

The Rangers have gone 18 for 57 with runners in scoring position and outscored opponents 45-17 during their 5-1 run. They've posted a 2.28 ERA and struck out 61 over 55 1-3 innings over that stretch, too.

Cruz has come up especially big over the last seven games, going 9 for 26 with four homers and 12 RBIs.

While things have gone the Rangers way of late, manager Ron Washington appears somewhat concerned about the short turnaround heading into Thursday.

"You just try to catch a nap on the plane," he told MLB's official website. "It's a tough trip with the time change but what are you going to do? It's the schedule, you have to play it. You get in, sleep as long as you can, get up, go to the ballpark and play baseball."

The Rangers have hit .296 in taking nine of 11 from the Twins (9-8), including a three-game sweep in Minnesota last April 13-15.

After beating Miami 4-3 earlier in the day, the Twins saw their five-game winning streak snapped with an 8-5 loss in the nightcap of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Joe Mauer, though, stayed hot with two hits and an RBI, raising his average to .366. The five-time All-Star is batting .444 with two homers and eight RBIs over his last 11 games.

"I've seen him hit his whole career, so we've seen him do this," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We keep saying it's incredible to do this at this level, and it is. He can just rack up those hits, and it's incredible, and that'll never change. He's just an incredible hitter."

Mauer, though, is a career .243 hitter versus Texas - his lowest mark against any AL team aside from Houston, which joined the league this season. He's 5 for 30 over his last nine home matchups in the series.

The Twins look to get back on track behind Vance Worley (0-2, 7.11 ERA), who finally showed signs of coming around Saturday in a 2-1, 10-inning road win over the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander allowed one run and five hits and struck out seven in as many innings.

"I had it figured out," Worley said. "I pitched. It wasn't me trying to overdo anything out there. It was just going after hitters and trusting my mechanics. Thus (it) made pitching a little easier. I was able to command both sides of the plate today and everything broke the way I wanted it to and (I got) better results."

The Rangers counter with rookie Nick Tepesch (1-1, 3.07), who was forced to leave Saturday's 5-0 win over Seattle in the second inning after getting hit by a line drive just above the wrist. The right-hander, though, checked out OK and should be good to go.

"It's kind of sore, but not too bad," he said. "It feels pretty good other than being a little stiff."

In his only road start, Tepesch allowed four runs and nine hits over 5 2-3 innings of a 4-3 loss at Seattle on April 14.
