KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY METS: 2017 70-92, fourth place
MANAGER Mickey Callaway (first season)
ADDITIONS: 3B Todd Frazier, RF Jay Bruce, LHP Jason Vargas, 1B Adrian Gonzalez, RHP Anthony Swarzak, LHP Matt Purke, C Jose Lobaton
SUBTRACTIONS: Manager Terry Collins, LHP Josh Smoker, LHP Josh Edgin, RHP Chasen Bradford, OF Norichika Aoki, RHP Erik Goeddel, RHP Tyler Pill, LHP Tommy Milone, OF Travis Taijeron
OUTLOOK: Callaway had great success with Cleveland's arms, and the injury-plagued Mets are counting on his methods, along with new pitching coach Dave Eiland, to keep their talented but fragile rotation intact. New York also overhauled its medical department, hoping to keep star players on the field. Syndergaard and deGrom make for an imposing 1-2 punch. So if Harvey, Matz and Zack Wheeler -- even one or two of them -- can finally stay healthy and approach their initial big league form, the pitching staff could be terrific again after unraveling last year with a 5.01 ERA that ranked 28th in the majors. Vargas was signed to eat innings but will miss some time at the beginning of the season after surgery for a broken right (nonpitching) hand. All-Star outfielder Michael Conforto (27 HRs, .384 OBP, .939 OPS) is targeting a May 1 return from surgery for a dislocated left shoulder. His status is critical to a lineup that lacks speed and a natural leadoff hitter. Nimmo made strides last season and is a potential candidate for that role while platooning early with Juan Lagares to fill Conforto's spot in center field. After the Mets spent nearly $90 million to plug holes in free agency, it still might be a stretch to envision them seriously challenging star-studded Washington for NL East supremacy. But with better health in a soft division, they could certainly rejoin the wild-card hunt.
MILWAUKEE: 2017: 86-76, second place.
MANAGER: Craig Counsell (fourth season).
ADDITIONS: OF Lorenzo Cain, OF Christian Yelich, RHP Jhoulys Chacin, RHP Yovani Gallardo, LHP Boone Logan, RHP Matt Albers.
SUBTRACTIONS:2B Neil Walker, OF Lewis Brinson, RHP Matt Garza, RHP Wily Peralta, RHP Carlos Torres, RHP Jared Hughes, RHP Anthony Swarzak.
OUTLOOK: Expectations are up after the Brewers finished one game out of the playoffs in what was supposed to be the second full season of a rebuild. Instead of signing a high-priced starter, General Manager David Stearns added Cain and Yelich as the team's key offseason acquisitions. The new outfielders are former Gold Glove winners who can help out the pitching staff by cutting down on extra-base hits at Miller Park. The rotation should be bolstered later in the season by the return of right-hander Jimmy Nelson, who is recovering from right shoulder surgery in September after getting hurt while diving back to first while running the bases. Whether the Brewers repeat their 2017 success and challenge the Cubs in the NL Central could come down to starting pitching. A trade drawing from the team's outfield depth might help during the season.
PREVIEW
Surging Brewers close out series with Mets

MILWAUKEE -- It might be time to take the Milwaukee Brewers seriously.

The Brewers established season highs Saturday, producing 17 runs and 19 hits in a 17-6 rout of the New York Mets to move to 13 games above .500 and pad their National League-leading record to 33-20.

The Brewers will try to keep it going Sunday at Miller Park when they wrap up their season series with the Mets, who send right-hander Zack Wheeler to the mound.

Wheeler could have been a part of Milwaukee's current success had the Mets not had second thoughts about a 2015 trade for center fielder Carlos Gomez.

Doug Melvin, the Brewers' general manager at the time, thought he'd reached agreement with the Mets on a deal that would have sent Gomez back to the team that drafted him in exchange for Wheeler -- at the time still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery -- and Wilmer Flores, who famously was caught crying by television cameras after learning of the trade during a game.

New York backed out of the deal, citing concerns with Gomez's medical report, and Milwaukee eventually swung a deal with Houston that landed dominant reliever Josh Hader while Wheeler remained with the Mets.

Wheeler (2-4, 5.32 ERA) takes the mound Sunday for the series finale, looking to win for the first time since April 29.

Wheeler has dropped three straight decisions since that last victory. He has struggled for the most part this season, posting a 6.97 ERA against all teams but the Marlins, who he has held to two earned runs in 13 innings spanning two starts.

He faced them his last time out and allowed three runs (one earned) in six innings and stuck out a season-high nine thanks to an effective slider.

"I've been looking for it all season," he said of the pitch. "It's something that breaks late toward that side of the plate. I need it. Hopefully, it carries over to the next start."

Wheeler is 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA in three starts against the Brewers, and 1-0, 1.54 in two career outings at Miller Park.

He'll face right-hander Jhoulys Chacin, Milwaukee's most consistent starter this season.

Chacin (3-1, 3.32) took a no-decision his last time out despite holding Arizona to two hits in five scoreless innings. He's 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA in his last eight starts and is holding opponents to a .230 batting average this season.

"The first three or four starts, my fastball command wasn't good and they weren't swinging at my slider," Chacin said. "My fastball command has gotten better and they swing more at my slider now.

"For some reason, I started off slow. Then I was working with D.J. (pitching coach Derek Johnson) on my pitches and my mechanics. Now, it has paid off, all the work I've been doing."

He's 2-5 lifetime against the Mets, posting a 5.76 ERA in 10 career appearances (nine starts) and held them to a run in four innings earlier this season in a 3-2 Brewers loss.
