Manager: Bryan Price (third season)
Who's new? RHP Scott Feldman, RHP Drew Storen, RHP Lisalverto Bonilla, OF Ryan Raburn, OF Desmond Jennings, IF/OF Arismendy Alcantara
Who's gone? 2B Brandon Phillips, C Ramon Cabrera, RHP Dan Straily, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Alfredo Simon, LHP John Lamb, RHP Josh Smith
Projected lineup: CF Billy Hamilton (.260, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 58 SB), SS Zack Cozart (.252, 16, 50), 1B Joey Votto (.326, 29, 97), LF Adam Duvall (.241, 33, 103), RF Scott Schebler (.265, 9, 40), 3B Eugenio Suarez (.248, 21, 70), C Devin Mesoraco (.140, 0, 1 in 16 games), 2B Jose Peraza (.324, 3, 25, 21 SB)
Rotation: RH Anthony DeSclafani (9-5, 3.28 ERA), RH Scott Feldman (7-4, 3.97 with Astros and Blue Jays), LH Brandon Finnegan (10-11, 3.98), RH Tim Adleman (4-4, 4.00), RH Robert Stephenson (2-3, 6.08) or Cody Reed (0-7, 7.36) or Amir Garrett (2-5, 3.46 for Triple-A Louisville)
Key relievers: RH Raisel Iglesias (3-2, 2.53, 6/8 SV), RH Drew Storen (3-0, 3.44 with Mariners), RH Michael Lorenzen (2-1, 2.88), LH Tony Cingrani (2-5, 4.14, 17/23 SV), RH Jumbo Diaz (1-1, 3.14), RH Blake Wood (6-5, 3.99)
Hot spot: Rotation. The Reds' rebuilding effort is just beginning to bear fruit on the mound. DeSclafani, 26, made a big leap in his second full season in 2016. Finnegan, 23, will try to do the same this year. If the next wave of pitchers isn't ready for the major leagues, Stephenson, Reed, Garrett, Sal Romano and Rookie Davis would make a mean rotation at Triple-A. Meanwhile, 40-year-old Bronson Arroyo will try to hold down a job like it's 2004.
Outlook: After trading Phillips to the Braves, only Votto and pitcher Homer Bailey remain from the Reds' last season as a contending team. Cincinnati was basically a .500 team (36-37) after the All-Star break last season, so maybe a return to respectability isn't far off. Hamilton and infielder Jose Peraza, electric on the bases and in the field, have breakout potential. There might not be another star on the roster besides Votto, but that's OK for now. With no veterans blocking their best prospects, the Reds can use this season to figure out what their system holds. | | MILWAUKEE: 2016: 73-89, fourth place
Manager: Craig Counsell (third season)
Who's new? 1B Eric Thames, 3B Travis Shaw, C Jett Bandy, RHP Neftali Feliz, RHP Joba Chamberlain, LHP Tommy Milone
Who's gone? 1B Chris Carter, C Martin Maldonado, OF Rymer Liriano, RHP Tyler Thornburg, RHP Blaine Boyer, LHP Chris Capuano
Projected lineup: 2B Jonathan Villar (.285, 19 HR, 63 RBI, 62 SB), SS Orlando Arcia (.219, 4, 17), LF Ryan Braun (.305, 30, 91, 16), 1B Eric Thames (.317, 40, 118, 13 SBs in Korea), RF Domingo Santana (.256, 11, 32), 3B Travis Shaw (.242, 16, 71 with Red Sox), CF Keon Broxton (.242, 9, 19, 23 SB), C Jett Bandy (.234, 8, 25 with Angels)
Rotation: Junior Guerra (9-3, 2.81 ERA), Zach Davies (11-7, 3.97), Matt Garza (4-8, 4.51), Wily Peralta (7-11, 3.86), Jimmy Nelson (8-16, 4.62) or Chase Anderson (9-11, 4.39) or Tommy Milone (3-5, 5.71 with Twins)
Key relievers: RHP Neftali Feliz (4-2, 3.52 with Pirates), RHP Corey Knebel (1-4, 4.68), RHP Carlos Torres (3-3, 2.73), RHP Jhan Marinez (0-1, 3.22), RHP Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 2.25 with Indians), RHP Jacob Barnes (0-1, 2.70), RHP Tyler Cravy (0-1, 2.86)
Hot spot: Fifth starter. Guerra and Davies began last season in the minors, then emerged as pleasant surprises in an otherwise long season. Now the Brewers have seven candidates for five rotation jobs. Nelson, who's led the staff in innings the last two years, might be wary of his two minor league options if he struggles out of the gate.
Outlook: No team was more active on the bases last season than the Brewers, whose 181 steals were the most by any team since 2009. Villar, Broxton and Hernan Perez were the primary thieves, and all return. The front office curiously chose not to bring back Carter after a 41-home run season. His replacement is Thames, who hasn't had a major league at-bat since 2012. Hitter-friendly Miller Park will do no favors to their pedestrian pitching staff, but the Brewers aren't expected to contend for at least another couple seasons. At least their offense will be entertaining in the meantime. |
| | RHP Feldman expected to return as Reds face Brewers
MILWAUKEE -- Having passed a battery of tests on his ailing knee, Scott Feldman is slated to come off the disabled list Saturday and return to the mound as the Cincinnati Reds face the Milwaukee Brewers in the second of a three-game series at Miller Park. Feldman, 7-7 with a 4.34 ERA in 19 starts this season, went on the DL July 17 with inflammation in his right knee. After a month of rehabbing, the veteran is ready to get back to work. "It's been pretty annoying being on the DL as is usually the case," Feldman said. "I'm just happy to get back out there." Feldman was the team leader in starts and innings before the injury and was hitting a stride, going 3-2 with a 2.92 ERA heading into the All-Star break. Reds manager Bryan Price is hopeful that Feldman can pick up where he left off but understands that knee injuries can be a lingering issue and Feldman will need to be monitored. "My hopes are that he'll be able to maintain what we saw those first couple of months, as far as being able to go out there and take the field and do all the little things that he had to do as a pitcher -- field your position, swing the bat, run the bases, et cetera, without too much issue," Price said. "If there is a lot of issue with that, then we'll have to reconsider where we go moving forward. Right now I feel good about him taking the mound." Feldman has faced Milwaukee twice already this season, going 0-1 with a 2.87 ERA. He's faced the Brewers six times in his career, going 2-3 with a 4.06 ERA and has a 4.14 ERA in five career starts at Miller Park. The Brewers will try to build off an encouraging loss Friday night. They trailed 10-2 after three innings but Milwaukee's slumping offense broke out of its doldrums in a big way and managed to put eight runs on the board over the final four innings before falling 11-10. "To me, it is a loss and it stings, but it is a good sign for us," said Brewers manager Craig Counsell, whose team has lost a season-high six straight games. "We played with a bunch of energy those last four innings and made it tough on them. We took a little piece out of them having to use (closer Raisel) Iglesias for two innings. That should help us the next couple of nights. They had to use (reliever Michael) Lorenzen tonight, as well. They had to use their guys tonight. I think when you are down eight in the sixth and you can take a little piece out of them hopefully there's something ahead of us that pays dividends." Lefty Brent Suter (2-2, 3.31 ERA) gets the start for Milwaukee, looking to bounce back after a four-inning outing against the Minnesota Twins on Monday, his shortest of the season. He was 0-1 with a 4.20 ERA in eight appearances, including a spot start when he moved into the Brewers rotation after Chase Anderson landed on the DL in early July. Since then, Suter has made seven starts, posting a 2-1 record with a 2.97 ERA but has struggled in his last two outings, allowing eight earned runs in 9 1/3 innings of work. Suter has never started against the Reds but struck out two in an inning of relief against Cincinnati earlier this season. |
