Hot spots: Rotation. The back end looked like a big leap of faith when spring training began. Wainwright and Wacha are coming off their worst seasons. Another 2013 World Series mainstay, Lynn, didn't pitch last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. Then, on the first day of camp, 22-year-old right-hander Alex Reyes learned he needed Tommy John himself. That leaves a lot of question marks after ace Martinez ' more than any Cardinals staff has faced in years.
Outlook: This 40-man roster hints at a team in transition. Venerable 34-year-old catcher Molina is still St. Louis' biggest star. Reyes' injury hurts the youth movement, but the Cardinals are still stacked with talented 20-something sluggers ' Piscotty, Diaz, Gyorko and Grichuk ' who could emerge as household names. Adding Fowler's speed and patience should complement an already deep lineup. The pitching staff is a different matter. Barring a big resurgence from Wainwright, Lynn and Wacha (or a big trade) it's hard to see the Cardinals contending for more than a wild card spot in the Cubs' shadow. | | MILWAUKEE: 2016: 73-89, fourth place

Hot spot: Fifth starter. Guerra and Davies began last season in the minors, then emerged as pleasant surprises in an otherwise long season. Now the Brewers have seven candidates for five rotation jobs. Nelson, who's led the staff in innings the last two years, might be wary of his two minor league options if he struggles out of the gate.
Outlook: No team was more active on the bases last season than the Brewers, whose 181 steals were the most by any team since 2009. Villar, Broxton and Hernan Perez were the primary thieves, and all return. The front office curiously chose not to bring back Carter after a 41-home run season. His replacement is Thames, who hasn't had a major league at-bat since 2012. Hitter-friendly Miller Park will do no favors to their pedestrian pitching staff, but the Brewers aren't expected to contend for at least another couple seasons. At least their offense will be entertaining in the meantime. |
| | Cardinals look to even series with Thames-led Brewers
MILWAUKEE -- When the Milwaukee Brewers plucked Eric Thames after a three-year stint dominating the Korean League, the hope was he would provide some left-handed balance to a lineup heavy on right-handed hitters. The move had its skeptics as Milwaukee parted ways with Chris Carter, the reigning National League home run champ, to make room for Thames, but it has certainly paid off; when the Brewers take on the Cardinals Friday in the second of a four-game series at Miller Park, Thames will begin the day atop the National League in home runs and batting average, fourth in RBIs and among the top 10 in walks. Thames, 30, didn't find much success in his first go-round in the big leagues and ultimately found his way to Japan, where he turned into a renowned power hitter, but also mastered skills that had alluded him back in the states: staying away from pitches outside the strike zone and identifying breaking balls. As a result, Thames is thriving back in the bigs and powering a Milwaukee offense that leads the league with 32 home runs this season. "He's doing a really good job (of plate discipline)," Counsell said. "That's kind of the foundation for every hitter, deciding between strikes and balls. That's the start of every hitter's success. "You'll have success if you figure out the pitches to swing at. He's doing it at a very high level right now. It's not as easy as he's making it look. He has hit balls all over the field. It hasn't been just one place. It's a pretty solid, consistent overall approach right now." The Cardinals will be short a key player when the series resumes. Shortstop Jhonny Peralta landed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday in order to recover from an upper respiratory issue that has nagged him since Spring Training. Medication prescribed to Peralta was having adverse effects, so the team decided to give him a break. "He knew something wasn't right but nobody really knew why," general manager John Mozeliak said. "I still think there are some questions, but I think the good news is there is a strategy to try to get him back. "They were using medications and, unfortunately, it just didn't sit well with (Peralta), from his stomach to just not feeling well until fatigue set in." Like the rest of the Cardinals offense, Peralta was off to a slow start, batting just .120 on the year. But St. Louis showed signs of life Thursday, scoring five runs against the Brewers -- their second-highest run total of the season. Offense would be a welcome sight for Adam Wainwright, who takes the mound Friday looking for his first victory of the season. The veteran has been limited to just 13 2/3 innings over his three starts, averaging 20 pitches per frame and allowing 10 of 15 leadoff batters to reach base. Working in his favor Friday is a track record of success against the Brewers. In 35 career appearances (28 starts), Wainwright is 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA including a 6-4 mark and 2.55 ERA in 18 appearances at Miller Park. The Brewers will counter with right-hander Wily Peralta, off to a strong start after a disappointing 2016 campaign. He's won each of his first three starts while posting a 2.65 ERA and striking out 13 in 17 innings of work. St. Louis, though, has not been kind to Peralta, who is 4-10 with a 4.74 ERA in 16 career starts against the Cardinals. |
