KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's desert overhaul began last summer with the hire of Tony La Russa as chief baseball officer.
More hires followed: Dave Stewart as general manager, Joe Carter and De Jon Watson to front-office positions, Chip Hale as the new manager.
Now that the brain trust is in place, it's time to see what the new-look Diamondbacks can do on the field.
''I don't have a crystal ball. I just know we'll be competitive,'' La Russa said. ''I've said before, I'll be broken-hearted if we don't have a winning record this year.''
Arizona has fallen hard since winning the 2011 NL West crown, putting together a pair of .500 seasons before dropping to 64-98 a year ago, the worst record in baseball and second-worst in franchise history.
Some of it was injuries; the Diamondbacks lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery and seemed to have every one of their top players get hurt at some point.
But La Russa and the rest of the front office also saw need for changes, which began during the trade deadline and continued during the offseason.
Gone are catcher Miguel Montero, third baseman Martin Prado, shortstop Didi Gregorius, along with pitchers Wade Miley and Brandon McCarthy.
Even with the losses, Arizona's lineup should be potent.
A.J. Pollock, Mark Trumbo and Paul Goldschmidt are all healthy after missing games last season and David Peralta returns in right field after a solid rookie season. Arizona also picked up Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas, who has potentially game-changing power.
But, as has been the case in the desert, pitching will be the big question
Arizona traded Miley to Boston and its opening day starter will be Josh Collmenter, an over-the-top-throwing right-hander who has bounced between the bullpen and the rotation during his four big-league seasons.
Patrick Corbin and Bronson Arroyo were part of the rotation last season, but both underwent Tommy John surgery and aren't expected to return until at least midseason.
The Diamondbacks picked up right-hander Rubby De La Rosa in the Miley trade and right-hander Jeremy Hellickson in another deal with Tampa Bay. Arizona also signed 21-year-old Cuban right-hander Yoan Lopez, who is competing for a spot in the rotation, and has right-handers Chase Anderson and Trevor Cahill back from last season.
For all the potential the Diamondbacks have with their bats, it won't matter much if the pitchers don't come through.
A few more things to look for from the 2015 Arizona Diamondbacks:
GOLDY SHINES: Goldschmidt was having another stellar season in 2014 when he was derailed by a broken hand at the start of August. Before his injury, the All-Star first baseman had become one of the best power hitters in the game and was runner-up in the NL MVP race in 2013, when he hit .302 with 26 homers and 125 RBIs. He felt good throughout spring training and expected to be back giving the Diamondbacks some consistent pop in the lineup.
REPLACING MONTERO: Arizona took a gamble during the offseason by trading Montero to the Chicago Cubs. A two-time All-Star, Montero was a steadying influence in the clubhouse and behind the plate, not to mention a power bat in the lineup. Now that he's gone, the Diamondbacks will turn to 31-year-old Tuffy Gosewisch, who has 179 career at-bats and didn't break into the majors until 2013 after eight years in the minors.
ADDING TOMAS: The Diamondbacks made a bit of an international splash by signing Tomas to a six-year, $68 million contract. The dilemma now is to figure out where to play him and how quickly he can adjust to playing in the big leagues. Arizona would like to play the 24-year-old at third base, but could move him to the outfield if he can't make the transition to a position he's never played. Tomas has plenty of raw ability and is young, so the Diamondbacks have high hopes for him - wherever he ends up playing.
HUDSON'S RETURN: Daniel Hudson was a consistent performer on Arizona's staff before having Tommy John surgery each of the past two seasons. He returned last September, pitching in the bullpen. The right-hander is expected to start the season in the bullpen, but could find a place back in the rotation if he remains healthy.
MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Success for the Brewers this season may hinge on Milwaukee's consistency in the batter's box.
September swoons can prove costly - as can prolonged slumps any other time of year, for that matter.
A lineup filled with accomplished hitters like Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Carlos Gomez has the potential to score runs. To break into the playoffs from the competitive NL Central, the Brewers must eliminate team-wide slumps.
''Last year we kind of grinded it to a point where instead of just playing day to day and for that game and to win, we looked like we were forcing things,'' manager Ron Roenicke said. ''We were trying to hold on to what we had, and that's not the way we go about it.''
The Brewers spent 150 days in first place before a stunning, late-season collapse left them out of the playoffs for a third straight year.
''We've got a good club, and when we're playing the type of baseball I think we can play every night ... if we just worry about that game today, at the end of the season, good things will happen,'' the skipper added from the team's spring training complex in Phoenix.
The lineup is bashing again this spring.
After a slow start, Braun has been hitting much better following an unusual offseason medical procedure. Extreme cold was applied to his right hand in hopes of fixing a lingering nerve problem near the thumb.
Lucroy also looks like he is over a hamstring injury that limited him for the first few weeks of spring training. The upbeat, energetic Gomez had three homers three weeks into spring ball.
''Every day you learn something new ... you learn from that,'' Gomez said about the 2014 season. ''The first step we have to do is make the playoffs. We take it game by game.''
The regular season begins on April 6 against Colorado at Miller Park. Some things to watch with the Brewers:
PITCHING: The Brewers don't have a true ace, but they do have solid veterans atop the rotation in Kyle Lohse and Matt Garza. Wily Peralta won 17 games last year in his second full season in the majors, and Mike Fiers impressed down the stretch. But Milwaukee traded Yovani Gallardo and Marco Estrada, so there is no experienced starting depth. Young right-hander Jimmy Nelson must prove he can be a consistent fifth starter. A long-term injury to any of the starting five could leave the Brewers scrambling.
In the bullpen, veteran Francisco Rodriguez figures to return to the closer's role after re-signing with the club more than two weeks into spring training. He bounced back with 44 saves in 49 chances last season.
AGGRESSIVENESS: Roenicke likes his team to take chances on the base paths, and he's sticking with that philosophy. That puts the Brewers in attack mode, and when working at its best, the strategy forces the defense to rush and possibly make mistakes. But rally-killing outs on the bases can make fans at Miller Park groan. Perhaps of more concern is the approach at the plate, where the Brewers led the majors by swinging at 33 percent of first pitches, according to STATS. Darnell Coles is the new hitting coach. The team wants to stay aggressive while having more plate discipline.
KEYSTONE COMBO: While Braun, Lucroy and Gomez draw much of the attention in the lineup, the Brewers' keystone combination of second baseman Scooter Gennett and shortstop Jean Segura will be just as vital to the team's success. Gennett, a left-hander, will play every day and must prove he can hit lefties consistently. The speedy Segura is a top defender, though he is looking to bounce back from a slump that dropped his average nearly 50 points to .246.
RAMMY OUT: It is probably one more and done for third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who turns 36 in June. He has said he likely will retire after this season to spend more time with his family. Ramirez's production has waned over the last two seasons, though he remains one of the best in the league in fielding bunts and slow rollers to third.

*Diamondbacks-Brewers Preview* ==============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Arizona (21-25) at Milwaukee (16-32), 8:10 p.m. EDT

The Arizona Diamondbacks didn't have quite enough to win any of their three games against baseball's top team. They'll try for better results versus the majors' worst as they visit the slumping Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

Arizona (21-25) had won six of seven before getting swept in St. Louis this week, though two of those defeats came in the Cardinals' final at-bat. Brad Ziegler gave up Jason Heyward's tying home run in the ninth inning Wednesday and catcher Jordan Pacheco's throwing error allowed the final run to score in the 4-3 defeat.

"We definitely know we can play with one of the best teams in the league, for sure," Ziegler told MLB's official website. "We were right there every game. I think it shows some areas where we can grow as a team, try to win some of those close games instead of losing them. We were real close."

The Diamondbacks will try to apply those lessons against Milwaukee (16-32), which owns the worst record in baseball after losing five in a row. The Brewers have been held to 11 runs during that skid while batting .193.

They've also dropped five straight at Miller Park, hitting .181 with 12 runs, after a 3-1 loss to San Francisco on Wednesday.

Adam Lind scored the lone run and singled for his only hit in his last 17 at-bats. Ryan Braun is 3 for 16 during the overall five-game skid, Carlos Gomez is 1 for 15 in his last four and Martin Maldonado is hitless in his last 18 at-bats at home.

"It is not like we aren't trying. We're trying," Gomez said. "Friday is another game, another series. We have to start from there and not think about the past."

Rubby De La Rosa (4-2, 4.27 ERA) will seek to add to those woes. He's 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA in his past four starts. The right-hander had one poor inning Saturday against the Chicago Cubs, giving up four runs in the fifth, and allowed one hit in his five scoreless ones in a 9-6 loss.

De La Rosa will face the Brewers for the first time, and Jimmy Nelson (2-5, 3.67) will make his first start against Arizona.

Nelson didn't get enough support in his attempt to win back-to-back starts Sunday, yielding two runs in 5 2-3 innings of a 2-1 loss in Atlanta. Five days earlier, he gave up one run in eight in an 8-1 win in Detroit.

Walks were an issue in both outings, however. The right-hander issued four against the Tigers before matching a career high with five versus the Braves, and one of those baserunners scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

Nelson has never faced any Diamondbacks hitter and likely won't relish his first chance to see Paul Goldschmidt, who has often been at his best against Milwaukee. Goldschmidt, among the NL leaders with a .329 average, is hitting .386 in 19 career matchups - his best versus any NL opponent - and .459 with four homers in nine contests at Miller Park.

Lind is 4 for 11 with two home runs and a double in five games against Arizona. He's 2 for 5 lifetime versus De La Rosa, and Gerardo Parra is the only other Brewers hitter to have faced him, hitting a homer in two at-bats.
