| |  | NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - Five straight losing seasons. That's what the New York Mets have produced since moving into Citi Field.
David Wright, for one, is tired of it.
''We need to start going out there showing results,'' the star third baseman said. ''The last couple years we've kind of been hampered by some contracts and payroll issues. It seems like that's behind us. At the same time, we've got those prospects knocking at the door. I think we're in a better place now than we have been the past few years and quite frankly, I think we have a better team.''
Translation: No more waiting for next year. No more selling the future. No more excuses.
It's time to take a step forward - and that means winning.
General manager Sandy Alderson seems to think so, too. After he signed free agents Curtis Granderson, Bartolo Colon and Chris Young this offseason, a report emerged that Alderson told staffers he thinks the Mets can win 90 games (with a payroll under $90 million).
Even hard-core fans found that overly optimistic, especially with ace Matt Harvey expected to miss the entire season following Tommy John surgery. New York posted its second consecutive 74-88 record last year - and that was with Harvey on the mound most of the way.
But there is reason for hope, particularly in Triple-A. Touted young pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero could soon join a promising rotation that includes Colon, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Jonathon Niese.
''He's got all the traits of the good ones,'' manager Terry Collins said about Syndergaard. ''He's on track to be special.''
The offense could be better with the addition of Granderson, who got a $60 million, four-year deal after an injury-plagued season for the Yankees across town. His left-handed power bat should provide some much-needed protection for Wright.
The multitalented Young, on a one-year contract following a down season in Oakland, appears highly motivated to regain his All-Star form.
''It's been interesting to watch the whole team,'' Granderson said early in spring training. ''There's power here. Chris Young has been amazing.''
The lineup remains flawed and prone to strikeouts, though the roster has improved. Perhaps not enough to push Washington and Atlanta in the NL East just yet, but the Mets expect to take significant strides this season as they anticipate Harvey's return in 2015.
''When I re-signed here, I knew it wasn't an overnight fix. I think I like that part of the challenge of it,'' Wright said. ''I want to be part of the reason why we get this thing turned around and headed in the right direction and ultimately start winning again. I think we have that ability.''

Home run, Ryan Braun.
Now let's see how he fares when the games count.
Bolstered by the return of Braun from a 65-game doping suspension and the signing of free-agent starter Matt Garza, Milwaukee enters the 2014 season hoping it has the pieces to contend again in the competitive NL Central.
Braun has vowed to return to his 2011 MVP form.
''I think the expectation is to have an opportunity to compete to get back to the playoffs. That's our goal, I think it's realistic,'' Braun said during spring training in Phoenix.
Staying healthy would help, too. Besides Braun's suspension, injuries sapped much of the Brewers' power last year with projected 3-4-5 hitters Braun, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart each missing various lengths of time. Hart never played because of a knee injury.
Hart is gone, but Braun and Ramirez are back and bolstered by new team cornerstones who emerged last season in Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura and Jonathan Lucroy.

Lucas Duda has homered on three of his last four hits, and his latest got the New York Mets a dramatic victory.
They may need more late heroics to beat the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers again considering how they've fared against Wily Peralta.
Duda attempts to continue his success at Miller Park as the Mets attempt to solve Peralta for the first time Saturday night.
Duda is 4 for 13 (.308) over the past four games, and three of those hits have left the yard. He homered just twice in his previous 20 games.
The first baseman leads the Mets (49-54) with a career-high 17 homers and hit one in each of the first two matchups of this four-game set, but his latest came in clutch fashion Friday. He capped a three-run ninth by connecting for a two-run shot off former Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez in a 3-2 win.
"It was a pretty special moment," Duda said after New York's third victory in four games. "I am glad I was able to help pick up the team and get this win."
Duda seems rather comfortable in Milwaukee (58-46), where he has three homers, two doubles and six RBIs in five career games. However, he's 0 for 4 with two strikeouts against Peralta (11-6, 3.58 ERA), who is aiming to set a career high in wins by helping Milwaukee bounce back from its first loss in five games.
Peralta has won his last two starts in impressive fashion, allowing two runs - one earned - and six hits in 14 innings.
The right-hander could be in for another strong showing since he's been dominant in winning both of his career starts against the Mets. Peralta held them to a run and four hits in 6 1-3 innings of a 3-1 road victory June 11, and he yielded two hits in eight innings of a 3-0 victory at Miller Park on Sept. 16, 2012.
David Wright is 0 for 6 against Peralta but coming off his third multihit effort in five days.
The Mets will counter with Jonathon Niese (5-5, 3.13), who is looking to show some improvement after struggling in his return from the disabled list. The left-hander, who was out with a strained shoulder, allowed four runs and a season-high 11 hits in six innings of Monday's 5-2 loss at Seattle.
Perhaps facing the Brewers could help. Niese is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA over his last four starts against them, and both victories came at Miller Park. In his only start versus Milwaukee this year, he yielded one run with eight strikeouts in 7 2-3 innings of a 5-1 loss in 13 on June 12.
He's held slugger Ryan Braun to 1 for 10 over the past four years, including 0 for 4 with two strikeouts last month.
Braun went 0 for 4 on Friday, snapping a 12-game hitting streak overall and 15-game run at home. He's still batting .370 with three homers and seven RBIs over his last seven home meetings with the Mets.
