| | | ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss. A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery. Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool. Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth. ''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.'' Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training. ''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
| | MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Two pitches into his spring training return, the Brewers' most important player tried to prove his point.
Home run, Ryan Braun.
Now let's see how he fares when the games count.
Bolstered by the return of Braun from a 65-game doping suspension and the signing of free-agent starter Matt Garza, Milwaukee enters the 2014 season hoping it has the pieces to contend again in the competitive NL Central.
Braun has vowed to return to his 2011 MVP form.
''I think the expectation is to have an opportunity to compete to get back to the playoffs. That's our goal, I think it's realistic,'' Braun said during spring training in Phoenix.
Staying healthy would help, too. Besides Braun's suspension, injuries sapped much of the Brewers' power last year with projected 3-4-5 hitters Braun, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart each missing various lengths of time. Hart never played because of a knee injury.
Hart is gone, but Braun and Ramirez are back and bolstered by new team cornerstones who emerged last season in Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura and Jonathan Lucroy.

*Diamondbacks-Brewers Preview* ==============================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
Arizona (11-22) at Milwaukee (21-10), 8:10 p.m. EDT
Matt Garza added an injury to his list of unfortunate events in his first season with the Milwaukee Brewers, who are going through their own struggles after ending their road trip in less-than-ideal fashion.
Garza and the Brewers hope the confines of Miller Park can help get them back on track as the club begins a nine-game homestand Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Brewers (21-11) dropped four of five to finish a seven-game road swing after winning nine of 11 overall prior to that stretch. They came apart in the late innings Sunday, allowing the tying homer in the eighth before giving up the winning run in the 10th of a 4-3 loss to Cincinnati.
Ryan Braun missed his eighth straight contest after going on the disabled list Saturday with a strained right oblique, and Aramis Ramirez went 1 for 15 in the four-game series to extend his slump to 1 for 34.
"This would've been an important game to win," manager Ron Roenicke said. "If you lose, you lose the road trip. If you win, you win the road trip. You wouldn't think one game could do that, but it does."
Garza (1-3, 5.00 ERA), who signed a four-year, $50 million deal in the offseason, had to leave Wednesday's start in the fourth inning due to a bruised right thumb after giving up five runs and walking four in a 9-3 loss to St. Louis.
It marked another difficult start for the right-hander, who allowed at least four runs for the fourth time in six outings.
"It's been a consistent battle for me so far this year," Garza said. "I don't know if it's me fighting myself or me trying to do too much or what it is, but it needs to stop. I'm going to carry my weight on this team and do my part. Right now, I'm not."
Roenicke told the team's official website on Friday that Garza will be OK to start this contest despite the injury.
"The black and blue's almost gone and the swelling's gone," Roenicke said. "He threw really well. I don't think that's going to be an issue."
Garza has been solid against the Diamondbacks, going 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA as slugger Paul Goldschmidt has gone 0 for 6 with three strikeouts against him.
Goldschmidt, though, is batting .440 during a six-game hitting streak after connecting for a solo homer in Sunday's 4-3 loss to San Diego that snapped a three-game winning streak for Arizona (11-23).
Tuffy Gosewisch had a two-run single for the Diamondbacks, who also were denied a fifth straight road win.
"I feel good about where we are at," Gosewisch said. "We did some good things in this series, and I think things are headed in the right direction."
Tyson Ross pitched a solid game in the finale, becoming the fourth straight starter to pitch seven innings for a staff that has a majors-worst 4.95 ERA. Mike Bolsinger will look to deliver another effective outing for Arizona in this contest while improving on his personal struggles.
Bolsinger (1-1, 5.79) has been hit hard in two of his three starts, most recently allowing four runs and nine hits in five innings of Arizona's 5-4 loss to Colorado on Tuesday. He exited after giving up four straight hits to start the sixth.
The rookie right-hander has never faced the Brewers, who have lost three straight home meetings to the Diamondbacks.
Arizona outfielder A.J. Pollack didn't start for the fourth straight game Sunday due to a groin injury, though he entered as a pinch-runner. His status for this contest is unclear.
