| | | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.
| | MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Two pitches into his spring training return, the Brewers' most important player tried to prove his point.
Home run, Ryan Braun.
Now let's see how he fares when the games count.
Bolstered by the return of Braun from a 65-game doping suspension and the signing of free-agent starter Matt Garza, Milwaukee enters the 2014 season hoping it has the pieces to contend again in the competitive NL Central.
Braun has vowed to return to his 2011 MVP form.
''I think the expectation is to have an opportunity to compete to get back to the playoffs. That's our goal, I think it's realistic,'' Braun said during spring training in Phoenix.
Staying healthy would help, too. Besides Braun's suspension, injuries sapped much of the Brewers' power last year with projected 3-4-5 hitters Braun, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart each missing various lengths of time. Hart never played because of a knee injury.
Hart is gone, but Braun and Ramirez are back and bolstered by new team cornerstones who emerged last season in Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura and Jonathan Lucroy.

*Padres-Brewers Preview* ========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
San Diego (9-10) at Milwaukee (14-5), 8:10 p.m. EDT
After a bit of a rough stretch, the Milwaukee Brewers are surging again.
Yovani Gallardo looks to remain undefeated while trying to help the Brewers to a fifth consecutive victory Tuesday night against the San Diego Padres.
Milwaukee (15-5) followed a nine-game winning streak by dropping three of four before it won the final three of a four-game set at Pittsburgh. The Brewers returned home Monday to win 4-3 over San Diego (9-11) in their third consecutive contest decided by one run.
Aramis Ramirez hit a solo homer and Ryan Braun added two RBIs for the Brewers, who have the majors' best record.
"They have a good-hitting team over there," losing pitcher Andrew Cashner said.
Braun is 6 for 12 with three homers and six RBIs in the last three games, and he's batting .391 (18 for 46) with 12 RBIs in his last 13 at home against San Diego.
After not allowing a run to win his first two starts, Gallardo (2-0, 1.46 ERA) yielded two in each of his last two. He gave up a two-run homer and two other hits over six innings of an 11-2 loss at Pittsburgh on Thursday.
"It's the same: He keeps us in the game," manager Ron Roenicke told the Brewers' official website.
The right-hander is 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in four starts in San Diego but 1-2 with a 7.58 ERA in four against the Padres at Miller Park.
Yonder Alonso is 6 for 15 with a homer and a double against Gallardo, and he had two hits with an RBI as the Padres dropped their second in a row Monday. The first baseman is also 6 for 15 with four RBIs in his last four games at Miller Park.
The Padres have been held to three or fewer runs in each contest during a stretch of three losses in five games.
San Diego starter Ian Kennedy (1-3, 4.13) has not pitched poorly but has received five runs of support while on the mound. The right-hander didn't allow a hit through five innings Thursday before giving up three runs in the seventh and four hits on the night during a 3-1 loss to Colorado.
Kennedy struggled against the Brewers last season, going 0-1 with a 6.57 ERA in two starts. Braun is 4 for 12 with a homer and a double in their matchups.
Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez, who is 2 for 6 against Kennedy, went 1 for 3 with a walk Monday as he waits to see if he will be suspended for his role in a brawl at Pittsburgh on Sunday.
"Whatever they say, if I feel like it is not fair, I'm going to appeal," he said about a potential suspension. "If I feel like it is fair, I'm going to take it."
Gomez is 12 for 22 with five doubles in his last six games against San Diego.
Milwaukee closer Francisco Rodriguez expects to be available after he recorded his fourth save in as many days in the opener. The veteran has not allowed a run over 11 innings while converting all eight save chances.
"I feel that I get better the more I throw," Rodriguez said.
