| | | TEXAS: HITTING: 2B IAN KINSLER will lead off again. A few less at-'em balls and he's an MVP candidate. SS ELVIS ANDRUS is coming along offensively, but his poor SB% could lead to fewer attempts. Injuries are the only thing that will keep OF JOSH HAMILTON out of the MVP discussion. He'll likely start declining at age 35, but DH MICHAEL YOUNG can't help but put up numbers batting cleanup in this lineup. 3B ADRIAN BELTRE was unstoppable in Arlington. Like Hamilton, he's an MVP candidate if healthy. Injuries are piling up for OF NELSON CRUZ, who still has monster power but doesn't run as much anymore. C MIKE NAPOLI is MLB's best offensive catcher and will play some 1B on 'off' days. Because their lineup is stacked, Texas can play defensive-minded/offensively limited 1B MITCH MORELAND. And because Ron Washington would prefer to play Hamilton in left, speedy CF CRAIG GENTRY looks to have the edge over DAVID MURPHY for the starting job in center. Cuban import LEONYS MARTIN will start the season in Triple-A, but JULIO BORBON could earn a significant OF role. STARTING PITCHING: COLBY LEWIS can overpower when he's on, but as a flyball pitcher in cozy Arlington he's going to have a handful of ugly days. The much-ballyhooed YU DARVISH brings a deep arsenal of pitches and a durable frame from Japan. He's probably the best Japanese arm to ever cross the Pacific. Lefty MATT HARRISON solidified his rotation spot. He has topped out as a respectable No. 3-type starter. DEREK HOLLAND has top-of-the-rotation upside. Consistency has been an issue, but hopefully another year and some big postseason moments helped to cure that. The big story is NEFTALI FELIZ moving to the rotation. He was considered a future ace in the minors, but the transition might not be easy. His K/BB ratio plummeted last year and his flyball tendencies could spell disaster in Arlington. Keep in mind the Rangers made a successful closer-to-ace switch with C.J. Wilson. Top prospect MARTIN PEREZ could be an option in the second half. RELIEF PITCHING: Veteran JOE NATHAN was brought in and handed the closer's job. He struggled in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but most pitchers who've had the procedure don't come all the way back until their second full season. If Nathan falters, MIKE ADAMS could be next in line. He had no trouble transitioning from pitcher-friendly San Diego in the National League to hitter-friendly Arlington and the A.L.'s superior bats. KOJI UEHARA would also be in the closer discussion if Nathan falters, but he was unhappy about being traded from Baltimore and faltered for the Rangers late last year. ALEXI OGANDO got a huge boost from his defense and his bullpen before a late-season collapse. He threw by far a career-high in innings; better stamina would allow him to take the next step and possibly rejoin the rotation. | | MILWAUKEE: HITTING: It helped when the Brew Crew had Prince Fielder in the fold, but there's still lots of firepower here now that he's moved on. 2B RICKIE WEEKS starts it off, with some of the game's best bat speed. OF NYJER MORGAN doesn't hit the ball hard, but when it drops in he's off to the races. OF RYAN BRAUN has put up Hall of Fame numbers since day one. Now the big question is whether he doped to do it. OF COREY HART has improved his batting eye and is no longer an on-base liability. He's also one of the few Brewers hitters who plays even average defense. 3B ARAMIS RAMIREZ is on the down side of his career, but remains productive. Backup TAYLOR GREEN should see decent time behind him though. IF MAT GAMEL is slated to start at first; nobody knows if he'll be any good. He sure as heck won't be Prince Fielder. C JONATHAN LUCROY was effective in a middle-of-the-road kind of way. Fourth OF CARLOS GOMEZ still can't hit. SS ALEX GONZALEZ will play every day and has decent pop for a middle infielder. STARTING PITCHING: The Brewers' front three is among the most formidable in baseball. YOVANI GALLARDO has improved his peripherals every year as a starter. High pitch counts used to chase him early in games, but not anymore. One day he'll win a Cy Young. ZACK GREINKE was a product of bad defense, bad luck, and an unusually high home run rate. In the second half, he was a beast. SHAUN MARCUM pulled a reverse Greinke, starting brilliantly then fading down the stretch. Not too surprising, given the durability issues that have followed Marcum throughout his career. Most teams would still kill to have him as their No. 3 starter. People laughed when the Crew signed RANDY WOLF for three years and $30 million, but he's been a highly dependable innings-eater in both seasons as a Brewer. The same holds for CHRIS NARVESON. He's the very definition of a back-end guy, but as fifth starters go, he's pretty good. RELIEF PITCHING: JOHN AXFORD and his Long John Silver's facial hair are proof positive that you don't need to spend a fortune on a closer. Axford was an undrafted retread when Milwaukee signed him. The list of 'proven closers' with fat contracts that Axford has outpitched each of the past two years is a deep one. FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ ruined the Brewers' offseason plans by accepting arbitration. He's a decent bet for some cheap saves, and still brings it with that crazy body-flinging delivery. But the team may still deal him at some point this season. KAMERON LOE has made a reasonably smooth transition to full-time reliever. |

*Rangers-Brewers Preview* =========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Texas (20-11) at Milwaukee (14-16), 8:10 p.m. EDT
After a promising start to a nine-game homestand, the Milwaukee Brewers are in the midst of a five-game skid.
The Brewers look to avoid a season-high sixth straight loss as they open a two-game interleague set against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night at Miller Park.
Milwaukee (14-16) held a 22-12 scoring advantage over Pittsburgh to win the first two on the home stretch, but has been outscored 35-17 while matching a season high with five straight losses.
"We need to stop that downward momentum and turn it over," reliever John Axford told the Brewers' official website.
Losers in eight of 11 since winning nine in a row, the Brewers hope they bottomed out when St. Louis completed a four-game sweep at Miller Park with a 10-1 win Sunday. Twice in that series, Milwaukee gave up six runs in an inning.
"You forget about it," said Sunday's losing pitcher Marco Estrada, who was tagged for eight runs in 3 1-3 innings. "Right now, it's in my head, and I'm sure it's in a lot of guys' heads, that we just got swept in a pretty crucial series. But you try to go out and forget about it. That's the only thing you can do."
One of the few recent Milwaukee bright spots has been star Ryan Braun, who is batting .424 (14 for 33) while hitting safely in eight straight games. He has four doubles and two home runs while going 8 of 27 (.296) with five RBIs in six games versus Texas.
Teammate Wily Peralta (2-2, 6.00 ERA) takes the mound in the opener looking to bounce back after he gave up six runs and 11 hits in 4 1-3 innings of a 6-5 loss to St. Louis on Thursday.
"That's just part of the experience," Peralta said. "Those days, you have to calm down yourself, try to make one pitch at a time. Don't try to go too crazy out there."
This will be his first appearance against the Rangers (20-12), who won two of three at Milwaukee in 2010.
Texas swept Boston at home over the weekend but lost 9-2 to the Chicago Cubs in a rescheduled game Monday. The Rangers, who entered that contest with a major league-best 3.02 ERA and held the Red Sox to four runs and 18 hits, gave up five runs in the fourth inning and 11 hits overall.
Scheduled starter Justin Grimm (2-1, 2.28) has been a big reason for Texas' staff success, but the right-hander allowed a three-run homer to Tyler Flowers in the sixth inning and four walks in a 3-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.
"He really had good stuff working (Thursday)," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Just left one in the wrong spot to Flowers."
The Rangers were held to five hits Monday, including two in seven innings by ex-teammate Scott Feldman.
Ian Kinsler's 11-game hitting streak was snapped after he went 0 for 4 on Monday. The Texas second baseman is 4 for 27 in his last seven interleague games.
Texas' Lance Berkman is a career .306 hitter against the Brewers, but the 37-year-old designated hitter could also rest during this brief interleague set. He did play in any of the three games at Wrigley Field.
