| | | CHICAGO CUBS: 2016: 103-58, won World Series
Manager: Joe Maddon (third season)
Who's new? OF Jon Jay, RHP Wade Davis, LHP Brett Anderson, RHP Koji Uehara, LHP Brian Duensing, RHP Eddie Butler
Who's gone? OF Dexter Fowler, IF/OF Jorge Soler, LHP Aroldis Chapman, LHP Travis Wood, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jason Hammel
Projected lineup: LF Kyle Schwarber (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI in two games), 3B Kris Bryant (.292, 39, 102), 1B Anthony Rizzo (.292, 32, 109), 2B Ben Zobrist (.272, 18, 76), SS Addison Russell (.238, 21, 95), RF Jason Heyward (.230, 7, 49, 11 SB), C Willson Contreras (.282, 12, 35), CF Jon Jay (.291, 2, 26 with Padres) or Albert Almora (.277, 3, 14 in 47 games)
Rotation: LH Jon Lester (19-5, 2.44 ERA), RH Jake Arrieta (18-8, 3.10), RH Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 2.13), RH John Lackey (11-8, 3.35), LH Brett Anderson (1-2, 11.91 in four games with Dodgers) or LH Mike Montgomery (4-5, 2.52 with Mariners and Cubs) or RH Eddie Butler (2-5, 7.17 with Rockies) or LH Rob Zastryzny (1-0, 1.13 ERA in eight games) or RH Alec Mills (0-0, 13.50 in three games with Royals)
Key relievers: RH Wade Davis (2-1, 1.87, 27/30 SV with Royals), RH Pedro Strop (2-2, 2.85), RH Hector Rondon (2-3, 3.53, 18/23 SV), RH Koji Uehara (2-3, 3.45, 7/9 SV with Red Sox), RH Carl Edwards Jr. (0-1, 3.75), RH Justin Grimm (2-1, 4.10), LH Brian Duensing (1-0, 4.05 with Royals)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter. Of all the candidates vying to replace Hammel, who signed with Kansas City as a free agent, most have plenty of upside but didn't log many innings last year. That includes Anderson, who had one productive season and one unproductive season for the Dodgers. Keep an eye on southpaw Montgomery, who tossed two shutouts as a starter for the Mariners in 2015, came to the Cubs last year in a midseason trade, then was effective as a reliever. Last time he was on the mound, he recorded the save in Game 7 of the World Series.
Outlook: There hasn't been a back-to-back champion this century. For opponents of the Cubs, that might be the most tangible nugget of hope. Most of the key players return from a powerhouse team that played historically good defense, got no fewer than 165 innings from each of its top five starters, and featured a deep lineup led by NL MVP Kris Bryant. In the bullpen, two-time All-Star Davis is capable of replacing closer Chapman if he's healthy. Among the Cubs' regular position players, only Zobrist and new center fielder Jay are over 30 ' everyone else is either entering or in the midst of his prime. This is a strong outlook. | | MIAMI: 2016: 79-82, third place
Manager: Don Mattingly (second season)
Who's new? C A.J. Ellis, RHP Edinson Volquez, RHP Dan Straily, RHP Brad Ziegler, RHP Junichi Tazawa, LHP Jeff Locke
Who's gone? C Jeff Mathis, INF Chris Johnson, RHP Andrew Cashner, LHP Mike Dunn, RHP Fernando Rodney
Projected lineup: SS Dee Gordon (.268, 1 HR, 14 RBI, 30 SB in 79 games), 3B Martin Prado (.305, 8, 75), CF Christian Yelich (.298, 21, 98), RF Giancarlo Stanton (.240, 27, 74 in 119 games), LF Marcell Ozuna (.266, 23, 76), 1B Justin Bour (.264, 15, 51), C J.T. Realmuto (.303, 11, 48, 12 SB), SS Adeiny Hechavarria (.236, 3, 38)
Rotation: LH Wei-Yin Chen (5-5, 4.96), RH Edinson Volquez (10-11, 5.37 with Royals), LH Adam Conley (8-6, 3.85), RH Dan Straily (14-8, 3.76 with Reds), RH Tom Koehler (9-13, 4.33)
Key relievers: RH A.J. Ramos (1-4, 2.81 40/43 SV), RH Brad Ziegler (2-3, 2.28, 18/20 SV with Diamondbacks), RH Junichi Tazawa (3-2, 4.17 with Red Sox), RH Kyle Barraclough (6-3, 2.85), RH David Phelps (7-6, 2.28), RH Dustin McGowan (1-3, 2.82)
Hot spots: Middle infield. Gordon and Hechavarria were a throwback double-play combo in 2016: strong defense up the middle, light with the bats. That would be OK in some lineups, but only three MLB teams scored fewer runs per game last season than Miami. Derek Dietrich was a more than capable fill-in during Gordon's PED suspension, posting a .374 on-base percentage. How long can Mattingly keep Dietrich on the bench if Gordon and Hechavarria struggle to hit?
Outlook: There are many recent examples of teams taking the 'stars and scrubs' approach to roster construction. It never ends well. The Marlins lost their brightest star when ace right-hander Jose Fernandez died far too young; replacing his production and presence was impossible. The remaining stars come with major question marks. Can Stanton stay healthy? If not, can Yelich and Bour be the pillars of the lineup? Who's the star of this pitching staff? No team managed by Mattingly has lost more than 82 games in a season. That will change in 2017. |
| | Cubs try to make it two straight versus Marlins
MIAMI -- Chicago Cubs right-hander John Lackey, who turns 39 in October, will be the first to admit he doesn't throw as hard as he did a few years ago. "But if you can locate, it doesn't matter," Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer told the media Sunday after Lackey beat his team 7-1. "(Lackey's) fastball was really good. If you locate consistently and make guys expand the zone a little bit, that always works." Lackey (5-7, 4.98 ERA) will try that plan again Friday when the Cubs (37-35) play the Miami Marlins (32-39) in the second contest of a four-game series at Marlins Park. The Cubs took the opener 11-1 on Thursday. "It seemed like it went the same way all night," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said of his team's failure to get back into the game. On Friday, Miami will start young right-hander Jose Urena (5-2, 3.64), who is in his third year in the majors and first as a relative fixture in the rotation. The 25-year-old went 5-14 combined in his first two years in the majors, sporting ERAs of 5.25 and 6.13. This year has been different. After pitching in relief in his first six games this season, Urena got his first start of the season May 7, beating the New York Mets 7-0. He has won his past four decisions, and the Marlins have prevailed in five of his past six games. He hasn't lost a decision since May 17. Urena has only faced the Cubs twice, sporting a 1-1 record with a 4.91 ERA. However, he beat the Cubs 6-5 at Wrigley Field on June 7, allowing three runs in five innings. Lackey, meanwhile, is 1-2 with a 5.01 ERA in five career starts against the Marlins. Lackey was on the mound June 7 when he got beat by Urena and the Marlins. One of Lackey's problems this year has been the long ball. He has allowed at least one homer in seven straight starts and 12 of 14 games. He has allowed 20 homers in 81 1/3 innings this year. Last year, he gave up 23 homers in 188 1/3 innings. Last year, Lackey allowed only 1.1 homers per nine innings. Ths year, he has allowed 2.2 long balls per nine, which would surpass his previous career high of 1.4. At this rate, Lackey will blow past his previous high of 31 homers allowed in one season. However, of the 20 home runs he has allowed this season, 11 have traveled less than 400 feet. Lackey on Friday will have to try to control Marlins left fielder Marcell Ozuna, who hit his 20th homer of the season Thursday and is bidding for a spot in next month's All-Star Game at Marlins Park. Ozuna is especially good at home. He is hitting .385 with 14 homers and 33 RBIs at Marlins Park this season. He also has one homer in 10 career at-bats against Lackey. As for Urena, the first batter he is likely to face Friday is Anthony Rizzo, who since moving to the leadoff spot is 6-for-8 with a walk and three home runs in his first at-bat of the game. |
