| |  | SAN DIEGO: San Diego Padres manager Bud Black turned the corner to meet the press on the first day of spring training and was taken aback at the throng of reporters waiting.
''What are we, the Yankees?'' Black asked.
No, but they're no longer the anonymous Padres, the light-hitting, star-less team planted near the bottom of the NL West.
Thanks to first-year general manager A.J. Preller's wild offseason, the Padres have been remade. There's suddenly star power. And expectations, too.
''The organization, from top on down, there's a different vibe,'' Black said.
A new ace in James Shields joins an already strong rotation. Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Wil Myers make for a brand new power-hitting outfield. Derek Norris is now catching. Newcomers Yangervis Solarte and Will Middlebrooks have had great springs as they compete at third base.
''I'm impressed,'' Kemp said. ''We've got a lot of great players in this clubhouse. We have a really good chance of winning some games.''
It's been a long time since people have been saying that about the Padres. They were last in the postseason in 2006. They haven't had a winning season since 2010 and last year finished 18 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
A lost season included a shake-up at the top. Preller, a former assistant GM with Texas, replaced the fired Josh Byrnes in August. Preller was then the clear star of baseball's hot stove season.
Kemp, who acknowledged he was shocked the Dodgers traded him, thinks the Padres now have the best outfield in the game.
Shields, who helped get Kansas City to the World Series last season, was the last piece. He signed in February.
''Shields wanted to be here. Kemp, Upton, Norris, those guys are happy to be here,'' Black said. ''They're happy to be in San Diego. They're happy to be a Padre. That's a good thing.''
Now it will be up to Black, lauded for squeezing as much as he can out of bad rosters, to make them winners. The Padres expect to contend for at least a wild card spot.
''I've been in San Diego for 40 years. That energy is back,'' Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler said. ''People are talking baseball and it's fun to be a Padre right now.''
ROTATION WORKHORSES: Adding Shields gives the Padres baseball's most durable pitcher on a staff already known for eating innings. The right-hander has tossed 1,785 2/3 innings since 2007. No pitcher has thrown more. Tyson Ross (195 2/3) and Ian Kennedy (201) were workhorses in 2014. Right-hander Andrew Cashner was the exception, but last year's opening-day starter has looked dominant as he returns from arm issues. Brandon Morrow and Odrisamer Despaigne are contending for the fifth spot. And Josh Johnson, coming back from elbow surgery, could be ready by June. ''The one thing we do have is pitching depth,'' Shields said. ''And you can never have too much.'' The one issue: no left-handers.
CAN THEY FIELD?: The new outfield packs power, but can they cover spacious Petco Park? Kemp's arthritic hips were made public during trade discussions and he no longer has the speed for center. Myers has only played there in the minors. ''They read the noise that we're not going to play defense,'' Black said. ''Players have a lot of pride.'' Veteran Wil Nieves, a non-roster invite, is the likely backup catcher with Tim Federowicz sidelined following knee surgery.
WHO PLAYS THIRD?: Solarte, acquired last summer from the Yankees, has impressed at the plate and can also play second and first. Middlebrooks, coming off a poor, injury-plagued 2014 in Boston, has hit well and looked smooth in the field. ''I'm not too worried about it. I know I'm a good player,'' Middlebrooks said. ''He's a good player as well. We're both going to be on the field at some point.''
WHAT HAPPENS TO QUENTIN?: Preller's next task is to figure out what to do with all his spare outfielders. That includes Carlos Quentin, the oft-injured two-time All-Star. ''Everyone knows there's a DH in the American League,'' said Quentin, who is open to a trade. Will Venable and Cameron Maybin also face uncertain futures.
PRESSURE ON BLACK: Black found a way to win 77 games last year with a roster that scored 535 runs, 38 fewer than any other team. But Preller declined to extend his contract in the offseason. ''We're both in the last year before we're free agents,'' Kennedy said, grinning. | | MIAMI: MIAMI (AP) - Two transactions midway through spring training that drew little notice heralded significant progress for the Miami Marlins.
Top pitching prospects Jose Urena and Justin Nicolino were optioned to the minor leagues - moves reflecting the franchise's improved depth of talent. This season, for a change, the front office doesn't feel compelled to rush youngsters like Urena and Nicolino to the majors.
''In previous years they would probably already be in the big leagues,'' president of baseball operations Michael Hill said. ''We've really tried to change that, be fair to the player and allow them to have the necessary growing pains in the minor leagues so when they do get to the big leagues, they can hit the ground running.''
When Urena and Nicolino do reach the majors, they might be joining a contender. Following a busy offseason highlighted by the signing of Giancarlo Stanton to a record $325 million contract, Miami's expectations are unusually lofty.
The Marlins don't talk just about finishing above .500 for the first time since 2009. They want to end an 11-year playoff drought.
''I love the talent we've been able to assemble,'' Hill said. ''If we handle our business, I'm pretty excited about where that will lead.''
While Stanton draws the biggest headlines, it might be the Marlins' rotation that separates them from the pack. They enter the season with five solid starters, and that doesn't include ace Jose Fernandez, the 2013 NL Rookie of the Year, who is projected to return from elbow surgery at midseason.
Miami acquired Mat Latos and Dan Haren in offseason deals, and they join Henderson Alvarez, Jarred Cosart and Tom Koehler. Latos is 56-40 since 2010, and the others each won at least 10 games last year, with a combined record of 48-39. Newcomer David Phelps, who is 12-11 as a starter, provides depth and can also relieve.
''I like our rotation,'' manager Mike Redmond said. ''These guys have gone out and competed for a long time and have a lot of experience, which is nice.''
Other things to know about the baseball buzz building in South Florida:
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: Stanton appears poised for another big year after being knocked out of the 2014 NL MVP race when a beaning ended his season in September. He led the NL in slugging and homers despite missing the final 17 games.
During spring training batting practice, new teammate Phelps noted that Stanton hits balls to the opposite field farther than most players can pull them. And he doesn't just outslug everybody.
''We ran shuttles the first week of camp and I figured he was a good athlete,'' Phelps said. ''But I didn't expect him to be outrunning everybody, too.''
TRENDING UPWARD: Miami went 62-100 under Redmond two years ago, and then ended a streak of three consecutive last-place finishes in the NL East by going 77-85 in 2014. The 15-win improvement tied for the best in the National League by a 100-loss team since 1986.
Among the players still around from that young, awful 2013 team are Stanton, Fernandez, Alvarez, Koehler, left fielder Christian Yelich, center fielder Marcell Ozuna and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria.
''The fun part is to see the excitement in guys now, and for them to talk about how far we've come in a short amount of time,'' Redmond said. ''As tough as it was at the time, I knew we would be better off for it, because we got some guys a lot of experience.''
STILL YOUNG: With the addition such veterans as Latos, Haren, third baseman Martin Prado, second baseman Dee Gordon and first baseman Michael Morse, the payroll is expected to be above $70 million. That's the highest for the Marlins since 2012, and an increase of about 50 percent from last year.
Even so, the Marlins remain young. Fernandez, Alvarez, Cosart, Stanton, Yelich, Ozuna and Hechavarria are all under 26. That creates a clubhouse environment foreign to Phelps, a right-hander acquired in a trade with the Yankees.
''It's a lot of young, talented players,'' said Phelps, 28, accustomed to being surrounded by the likes of Derek Jeter and CC Sabathia. ''It's really a breath of fresh air just to come in and have a core in place that is younger than me.''
Most of the Marlins have never played on a contending team, which raises some skepticism about their chances. But Alvarez predicted the Marlins will be playing games that matter late this season for a change.
''We're going to surprise a lot of people,'' he said. |

Jose Fernandez's performance in his first month back from Tommy John surgery has made the Miami Marlins' miserable season somewhat tolerable.
Looking to remain unbeaten at home for his career, the right-hander tries to help the lowly Marlins prevent the San Diego Padres from matching a season high with a fifth straight win Sunday.
Fernandez (4-0, 2.53 ERA) wasn't totally on his game while yielding four hits and four walks in six innings against Washington on Tuesday, but only allowed one run in a 4-1 home victory. It was good enough for him to improve to 15-0 with 1.19 ERA in 23 starts at Marlins Park.
"It's always fun to win. Winning at home is even more fun," said Fernandez after throwing a season-high 99 pitches in his fifth start since returning July 2 from elbow surgery.
Fernandez, who turned 23 on Friday, has struck out 173 and walked 40 while opponents have hit .172 against him at home in his career. He'll have the chance to join Johnny Allen (1932-33) and LaMarr Hoyt (1979-82) as the only pitchers since 1900 to win their first 16 home decisions.
"His record speaks for itself, what he's been able to do here," interim Miami manager Dan Jennings said. "I think it's remarkable."
Fernandez is 2-1 with a 2.29 ERA against San Diego, but allowed a two-run homer and a grand slam to Jedd Gyorko on May 9 of last season - his final outing before undergoing surgery.
More than a year later, Fernandez is in fine shape but Miami (42-62) has the majors' second-worst record and has totaled 16 runs while hitting .182 in losing seven of the last eight.
The Marlins managed three runs and five hits in each of the first two of this set and dropped their fourth in a row, 5-3 on Saturday.
Things might not get any easier against James Shields (8-4, 3.77), who has a 2.12 ERA while going 1-1 and receiving four runs of support while on the mound in his last three starts. He gave up a two-run first-inning homer and one other run in the eighth of a 4-0 loss to the New York Mets on Tuesday.
Though the right-hander's name was one of many Padre veterans rumored to be involved in trade talks this week, he's content in his first year with the club.
"As far as I'm concerned, I think I'm going to be here for a while," he said. "I think we're on the right track. We've just got to keep rolling."
Though Shields' most recent start against the Marlins came in 2012, he's allowed one earned run over 32 innings to go 3-0 in his last four.
Yangervis Solarte and Matt Kemp each had two hits with a RBI on Saturday as San Diego (51-53) won for the 12th time in the last 16 games with a fifth consecutive victory over Miami. The Padres, third in the NL West and 6 1/2 games out of the final wild-card spot, have scored at least five runs and recorded nine or more hits in each of the last four.
"The security guard from Miami told me, 'I've never seen anything like this. If they do 'Major League 4,' you guys could be 'Major League 4,"' interim Padres manager Pat Murphy said. "We're having fun and the guys are believing."
Kemp is batting .348 with 15 RBIs in his last 19 games.
Miami's Dee Gordon remains among baseball's leaders with a .330 average but is 1 for 15 in the last four games.
