| | | DETROIT: HITTING: OF AUSTIN JACKSON doesn't make much contact, but manager Jim Leyland likes his speed in the leadoff spot. RYAN RABURN and RAMON SANTIAGO will split second base duties, with Raburn getting the majority of the starts. 3B MIGUEL CABRERA seems to have cleaned up his act. He's an MVP candidate. So is newcomer 1B PRINCE FIELDER who will try to keep slugging in his move to a pitchers' park. His presence was needed after DH VICTOR MARTINEZ was lost for the season with a knee injury. OF DELMON YOUNG is a pending free agent, and he hit well after escaping spacious Target Field. He'll nab the starting LF job but could also DH. OF BRENNAN BOESCH did enough pre-injury to earn an everyday role, but he'll again be in danger of fading over the summer. SS JHONNY PERALTA had a resurgence in 2011, and he's on the right side of 30. C ALEX AVILA might not hit for average, but his power is legit. Leyland favorite BRANDON INGE and DON KELLY will back up the All-Star corner infielders, so neither expect to get much playing time. Streaky OF ANDY DIRKS is a fourth outfielder. C GERALD LAIRD will spell Avila. STARTING PITCHING: You can't expect an identical stat line for JUSTIN VERLANDER; his opponent .236 batting average on balls in play suggests there was some luck involved in his MVP season. But he's still the best pitcher in the American League by a wide margin. DOUG FISTER's improved strikeout rate with the Tigers suggests he could sustain success as a quality No. 2 starter. MAX SCHERZER can still be outstanding when he's on, but he was inconsistent again last year. He could figure it out in his late-20s, but time is running out. RICK PORCELLO still has a ways to go. His mid-season success came against some weak lineups. He's still only 23, but he hasn't been able to beat hitters at any level in the pros. The Tigers are still searching for a No. 5 starter. Top prospect JACOB TURNER is only 20, but the Tigers haven't been shy about fast-tracking young arms. He was dominant in the minors, but torched in his first big-league stint. ANDY OLIVER appears to be the front-runner for this role, but DREW SMYLY is also a possibility. RELIEF PITCHING: JOSE VALVERDE was perfect in 2011, but it was a surprising development considering his sliding K/BB ratio. For Tigers fans, he carries more risk than 49-for-49 would suggest. One of baseball's better set-up men, JOAQUIN BENOIT is an eighth-inning-only guy. He'd take over if Valverde got hurt. OCTAVIO DOTEL is another elite set-up man who will step up as the seventh-inning guy. As good as AL ALBURQUERQUE was in the regular season (one extra-base hit'a double'allowed in 43.1 innings!), he's out until at least the All-Star break after offseason elbow surgery. Lefty DANIEL SCHLERETH has a chance to be the closer of the future, but first he'll need to cut down on the walks. | | MIAMI: HITTING: Ozzie Guillen takes over as manager for the newly named Miami Marlins, who will open their new retractable-roof Marlins Ballpark in 2012. Indoor games could generate more offense, but the fences are pretty deep (340' to left, 384' to 392' power alleys, 416' center and 335' right). New SS JOSE REYES led the NL with a .337 average and posted a career-best .384 OBP. Malcontent HANLEY RAMIREZ will reluctantly move to 3B, but hopefully he will play harder under Guillen than he has under the previous two skippers. OF GIANCARLO STANTON hit 34 HR last year and will drive in 100 if Ramirez stays healthy. OF LOGAN MORRISON cranked 23 bombs, but his batting average dipped to .247 with this new-found power. 1B GABY SANCHEZ fizzled after August 1 (.211 BA), but still had 19 HR and 78 RBI. OF EMILIO BONIFACIO swiped 40 bases and led the team with a .296 average, but he'll move down the order because of Reyes. C JOHN BUCK and 2B OMAR INFANTE's jobs are secure, but 22-year-old prospect MATT DOMINGUEZ might start 2012 in Triple-A instead of sitting and watching Ramirez and Sanchez at the corner infield spots. STARTING PITCHING: JOSH JOHNSON is dominant when healthy, but he's made only 88 starts over the past five seasons. His shoulder feels great after surgery last year, and he expects to take the mound on Opening Day. MARK BUEHRLE followed his former manager and signed a 4-year, $58M deal with Miami. The 33-year-old lefty was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA last year, his 11th straight season of 200+ IP and 10+ wins. RICKY NOLASCO once again had 10 wins and a strong K-to-BB ratio (3.4), but also sported an 8.18 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in his final eight starts. ANIBAL SANCHEZ posted a second straight productive season, fanning 202 batters in 196.1 innings. He did give up twice as many HR (20) as he did in 2010 though. CARLOS ZAMBRANO will begin 2012 in the rotation, but where he ends up is anybody's guess. If Guillen can motivate him, Zambrano has plenty of innings left in his 30-year-old arm. RELIEF PITCHING: The signing of HEATH BELL to a three-year deal gives the Marlins a reliable long-term closer for the first time since Robb Nen in the mid-'90s. Bell's numbers could suffer a bit with the move to a smaller ballpark and an alarming drop in strikeout rate (11.1 in 2010 to 7.3 in 2011), but he still throws 94 mph. STEVE CISHEK will be the main set-up man for Bell and could see a handful of saves, converting all three opportunities last year and fanning 55 batters in 54.2 innings. MIKE DUNN is the lefty set-up man in this bullpen. He has great stuff (100 K in 86 career innings), but remains extremely wild (53 walks in those 86 IP). |

*Tigers-Marlins Preview* ========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Detroit (93-67) at Miami (60-100), 1:10 p.m. EDT
While tuning up for the playoffs, the Detroit Tigers' Justin Verlander will also try to break a lengthy drought.
Verlander will seek his first career hit in Sunday's season finale and help the Tigers try to avoid a three-game sweep to the lowly Miami Marlins.
Verlander (13-12, 3.56 ERA) is set to seek redemption in the postseason after suffering one of Detroit's losses in a World Series sweep to San Francisco last year. The right-hander enters the playoffs after failing to duplicate his recent stellar seasons.
He is on pace to record the fewest victories, fewest strikeouts and highest ERA since 2008. He's also probably focused on another set of numbers.
Verlander is 0 for 24 as a hitter and 0 for 27 including the World Series. That's the fourth-longest hitless streak by a Tigers pitcher since World War II and longest since the beginning of interleague play.
"He's had to take a lot of kidding because he's the one pitcher (in the rotation) who doesn't have a hit," manager Jim Leyland told the team's website. "He's actually hit a few balls pretty decent, in defense of him."
Before heading to Oakland to start the AL division series, Detroit (93-68) will try to avoid getting its first sweep at the hands of Miami (61-100).
Former Marlin Anibal Sanchez and three relievers helped keep Miami scoreless for the first eight innings Saturday until Ed Lucas hit a tying two-out single in the ninth off Joaquin Benoit.
After Benoit's second blown save in 26 chances, Giancarlo Stanton gave Miami a 2-1 victory with an RBI single in the 10th.
"It's kind of the cherry on top of the last couple days," Lucas said. "It's a good experience to get a hit with two outs in the ninth to help us win the ballgame."
Henderson Alvarez (4-6, 3.94) will try to lead the Marlins to their first three-game sweep since May 31-June 2, against the New York Mets. The right-hander, who has a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts, gave up two runs in the first inning against Philadelphia on Tuesday but kept the Phillies scoreless in his final six frames in a 2-1 loss.
"The key for a guy like Henderson is to learn from each start," manager Mike Redmond told the team's website. "He's had one inning, one bump in the road, it seems like every single outing that kind of costs him the game or a couple of runs, or the big inning. Like any pitcher, you look at that, and say, 'I've got to eliminate that big inning.'"
Alvarez won his only start against Detroit on July 28, 2012, while with Toronto. He gave up one run over seven innings in that 5-1 victory.
Verlander will face Miami for the first time in his career. Aside from Detroit, the Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers are the only teams he's yet to face.
Miguel Cabrera, a virtual lock for a second consecutive AL batting title, is slated to sit out this game to rest up for the playoffs. He finishes with a .348 average after batting .330 in 2012 while winning the triple crown.
