| |  | CLEVELAND: HITTING: SS ASDRUBAL CABRERA's reinvented swing, modeled after Ben Zobrist, likely led to his power surge. OF GRADY SIZEMORE is back on a one-year deal, so he has plenty of financial incentive to stay healthy. But he will begin the season on the DL after back surgery. OF SHELLEY DUNCAN is expected to get more playing time in replacing Sizemore, but speedy OF EZEQUIEL CARRERA is also waiting for his shot. Injuries and off-the-field issues spoiled OF SHIN SOO-CHOO's 2011, but there's a good chance he bounces back . . . OF MICHAEL BRANTLEY does everything well enough to get a regular gig in center. C CARLOS SANTANA is developing into a middle-of-the-order run producer. DH TRAVIS HAFNER can't be trusted to stay healthy or to produce power numbers. After another down year, 1B MATT LaPORTA will have to sit and watch CASEY KOTCHMAN start at first more often than not. 3B LONNIE CHISENHALL will get his chance to play every day, but dwindling production the past two years is a concern. 2B JASON KIPNIS will get first crack at second base. He's got nice pop for a middle infielder.
STARTING PITCHING: JUSTIN MASTERSON's strikeout rate continues to decline, and he still gets hit hard by lefties. Still, his strong groundball rate guarantees he's a solid middle-of-the-rotation arm at worst. His velocity dropped last year, and there's no telling if UBALDO JIMENEZ will ever regain his early 2010 form. He's the definition of high-risk, high-reward. DEREK LOWE was a decent middle-of-the-rotation arm in the National League, but now he must adjust to facing superior A.L. lineups . . . Healthy again, JOSH TOMLIN will remain in the rotation. He's hittable, throwing strikes and relying on his defense. Former Twins hurler KEVIN SLOWEY rounds out the staff. Although he posted a 6.67 ERA last year, Slowey has exhibited pinpoint control in his career with just 84 walks in 532.2 innings, tallying a .470 K-to-BB ratio. JEANMAR GOMEZ is a decent minor league arm, but his ceiling is low (long term and in the immediate future). CARLOS CARRASCO may not pitch in the bigs this year after Tommy John surgery.
RELIEF PITCHING: CHRIS PEREZ is entrenched as the closer, but he was a bit of a disappointment last season. His velocity dropped slightly, and his strikeout rate fell off a cliff. If Perez gets hurt, VINNIE PESTANO is next in line for saves. He may be undersized, but his stuff is overpowering. TONY SIPP proved he can get out righties too, but his value is as a lefty-on-lefty guy. Ditto for sidearmer JOE SMITH, who is deadly on righties. But it would be a surprise if he shut down lefties for a second straight year. RAFAEL PEREZ has been hampered by shoulder soreness in Spring Training, but the lefty should once again be serviceable in the late innings this year. | | MIAMI: HITTING: Ozzie Guillen takes over as manager for the newly named Miami Marlins, who will open their new retractable-roof Marlins Ballpark in 2012. Indoor games could generate more offense, but the fences are pretty deep (340' to left, 384' to 392' power alleys, 416' center and 335' right). New SS JOSE REYES led the NL with a .337 average and posted a career-best .384 OBP. Malcontent HANLEY RAMIREZ will reluctantly move to 3B, but hopefully he will play harder under Guillen than he has under the previous two skippers. OF GIANCARLO STANTON hit 34 HR last year and will drive in 100 if Ramirez stays healthy. OF LOGAN MORRISON cranked 23 bombs, but his batting average dipped to .247 with this new-found power. 1B GABY SANCHEZ fizzled after August 1 (.211 BA), but still had 19 HR and 78 RBI. OF EMILIO BONIFACIO swiped 40 bases and led the team with a .296 average, but he'll move down the order because of Reyes. C JOHN BUCK and 2B OMAR INFANTE's jobs are secure, but 22-year-old prospect MATT DOMINGUEZ might start 2012 in Triple-A instead of sitting and watching Ramirez and Sanchez at the corner infield spots.
STARTING PITCHING: JOSH JOHNSON is dominant when healthy, but he's made only 88 starts over the past five seasons. His shoulder feels great after surgery last year, and he expects to take the mound on Opening Day. MARK BUEHRLE followed his former manager and signed a 4-year, $58M deal with Miami. The 33-year-old lefty was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA last year, his 11th straight season of 200+ IP and 10+ wins. RICKY NOLASCO once again had 10 wins and a strong K-to-BB ratio (3.4), but also sported an 8.18 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in his final eight starts. ANIBAL SANCHEZ posted a second straight productive season, fanning 202 batters in 196.1 innings. He did give up twice as many HR (20) as he did in 2010 though. CARLOS ZAMBRANO will begin 2012 in the rotation, but where he ends up is anybody's guess. If Guillen can motivate him, Zambrano has plenty of innings left in his 30-year-old arm.
RELIEF PITCHING: The signing of HEATH BELL to a three-year deal gives the Marlins a reliable long-term closer for the first time since Robb Nen in the mid-'90s. Bell's numbers could suffer a bit with the move to a smaller ballpark and an alarming drop in strikeout rate (11.1 in 2010 to 7.3 in 2011), but he still throws 94 mph. STEVE CISHEK will be the main set-up man for Bell and could see a handful of saves, converting all three opportunities last year and fanning 55 batters in 54.2 innings. MIKE DUNN is the lefty set-up man in this bullpen. He has great stuff (100 K in 86 career innings), but remains extremely wild (53 walks in those 86 IP). |

The Miami Marlins' starting pitching has been outstanding of late.
Jacob Turner will try to continue that run Saturday night against the Cleveland Indians as the Marlins go for a season-high fourth consecutive victory.
With rookie All-Star Jose Fernandez striking out a career-best 14, which also tied for second-most in franchise history, Miami (43-65) beat Cleveland 10-0 on Friday for its eighth win in 12 games.
The Indians (60-49) entered the contest averaging 6.7 runs during a season-best eight-game win streak.
Marlins starters have surrendered two runs or fewer in 14 of 17 games.
"(Fernandez) was on a mission," manager Mike Redmond said. "He went out against a great lineup and really just dominated."
Miami's last four-game winning streak was also its last 4-0 run at home, June 27-July 1, 2012.
After surrendering three runs in 6 1-3 innings in Monday's 6-5 loss to the New York Mets, Turner is 3-0 with a 2.23 ERA in five outings in Miami since being called up in late May.
The young right-hander was denied the victory as the bullpen failed to hold a 5-3 lead, but he didn't sound like he was even deserving of a win.
"There were times I felt I had the ability to throw the pitch where I needed to and there were times when I felt like it wasn't there at all," said Turner, who has given up more than three earned runs once in 11 starts. "It's kind of frustrating."
His 2.97 run-support average in July had to be, too.
Turner (3-3, 2.65 ERA) will get his first look at the Indians, who have dropped seven of nine as the visitor.
Cleveland will try to correct its road woes before hosting AL Central-leading Detroit for four games starting Monday. The Indians fell three back of the Tigers, who opened their weekend series with Friday's 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
Cleveland will look to bounce back with Zach McAllister (4-6, 3.48) toeing the rubber. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA in two starts since missing seven weeks with a sprained right middle finger. He threw seven innings of two-run ball in Monday's 3-2 victory over the White Sox.
McAllister, who's lost his last three decisions, has yet to face the Marlins.
Logan Morrison could be a tough out if he's swinging the bat like he did Friday. The first baseman had four of the Marlins' 16 hits, the club's most since June 9, and drove in four runs.
Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria and rookies Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick each had as many hits (three) as Cleveland did, and Miami scored its most runs since an 11-6 win over the Mets on June 2.
"Unfortunately for us, that's as good a start as I think we've seen all year," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Fernandez.
