| |  | MINNESOTA: HITTING: OF BEN REVERE's slap-and-run style fits well in spacious Target Field. He will compete with lefty Chris Parmelee for the starting RF job. OF DENARD SPAN should be over his concussion problems. He works the count well as a steady presence near the top of the order. C JOE MAUER will see more time at first in an attempt to keep him healthy. Offensively, he'll be limited by a pitcher-friendly home park and no support in the lineup. RYAN DOUMIT has a chance to play regularly and stay healthy as a full-time DH and/or backing up Mauer behind the dish. 1B JUSTIN MORNEAU's concussion symptoms came back late last year. It's a bad omen. OF JOSH WILLINGHAM is being relied on to produce runs, but he's going from one pitcher-friendly home park (Oakland) to another. 3B DANNY VALENCIA showed enough power in 2011 to secure an everyday job heading into 2012. Newly signed SS JAMEY CARROLL has done a nice job off the bench, but hasn't been tested in an everyday role. If hamstring problems are still holding him back, 2B ALEXI CASILLA has won the second-base job ahead of disappointing import TSUYOSHI NISHIOKA, who will start the year in the minors.
STARTING PITCHING: Who would have thought CARL PAVANO would emerge as the picture of consistency and durability? While he's far from a star, the veteran continues to be a rock for Minnesota, throwing strikes and eating innings. SCOTT BAKER got hurt again last year. If he could ever stay healthy, he's the prototype for success at Target Field'lots of strikeouts, few walks, lots of flyouts. The FRANCISCO LIRIANO rollercoaster nosedived again last year. The Twins have gotten so desperate to keep him healthy that they actually let him pitch more over the offseason. He's obviously a huge risk again. BRIAN DUENSING, NICK BLACKBURN and JASON MARQUIS are all the definition of fifth starter. They serve it up, give up a lot of hard-hit balls, and hope they get hit right at their defenders. If Duensing and Blackburn falter, ANTHONY SWARZAK probably pitched well enough last year to get a shot in the rotation. LIAM HENDRICKS, one of the organization's better prospects, would be a slightly more exciting option.
RELIEF PITCHING: Despite his underwhelming performance last year, MATT CAPPS will pitch the ninth inning again because of his 'closer's experience.' He figures to be on an undeservedly long leash. GLEN PERKINS certainly proved he deserves to close. He was Minnesota's best reliever in his first full season in the 'pen. His velocity was up as a short reliever, and the lefty was truly overpowering. If things go sour for the Twins again this season (and it seems likely they will), perhaps they'll get serious about Perkins later this year. | | MIAMI: HITTING: Ozzie Guillen takes over as manager for the newly named Miami Marlins, who will open their new retractable-roof Marlins Ballpark in 2012. Indoor games could generate more offense, but the fences are pretty deep (340' to left, 384' to 392' power alleys, 416' center and 335' right). New SS JOSE REYES led the NL with a .337 average and posted a career-best .384 OBP. Malcontent HANLEY RAMIREZ will reluctantly move to 3B, but hopefully he will play harder under Guillen than he has under the previous two skippers. OF GIANCARLO STANTON hit 34 HR last year and will drive in 100 if Ramirez stays healthy. OF LOGAN MORRISON cranked 23 bombs, but his batting average dipped to .247 with this new-found power. 1B GABY SANCHEZ fizzled after August 1 (.211 BA), but still had 19 HR and 78 RBI. OF EMILIO BONIFACIO swiped 40 bases and led the team with a .296 average, but he'll move down the order because of Reyes. C JOHN BUCK and 2B OMAR INFANTE's jobs are secure, but 22-year-old prospect MATT DOMINGUEZ might start 2012 in Triple-A instead of sitting and watching Ramirez and Sanchez at the corner infield spots.
STARTING PITCHING: JOSH JOHNSON is dominant when healthy, but he's made only 88 starts over the past five seasons. His shoulder feels great after surgery last year, and he expects to take the mound on Opening Day. MARK BUEHRLE followed his former manager and signed a 4-year, $58M deal with Miami. The 33-year-old lefty was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA last year, his 11th straight season of 200+ IP and 10+ wins. RICKY NOLASCO once again had 10 wins and a strong K-to-BB ratio (3.4), but also sported an 8.18 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in his final eight starts. ANIBAL SANCHEZ posted a second straight productive season, fanning 202 batters in 196.1 innings. He did give up twice as many HR (20) as he did in 2010 though. CARLOS ZAMBRANO will begin 2012 in the rotation, but where he ends up is anybody's guess. If Guillen can motivate him, Zambrano has plenty of innings left in his 30-year-old arm.
RELIEF PITCHING: The signing of HEATH BELL to a three-year deal gives the Marlins a reliable long-term closer for the first time since Robb Nen in the mid-'90s. Bell's numbers could suffer a bit with the move to a smaller ballpark and an alarming drop in strikeout rate (11.1 in 2010 to 7.3 in 2011), but he still throws 94 mph. STEVE CISHEK will be the main set-up man for Bell and could see a handful of saves, converting all three opportunities last year and fanning 55 batters in 54.2 innings. MIKE DUNN is the lefty set-up man in this bullpen. He has great stuff (100 K in 86 career innings), but remains extremely wild (53 walks in those 86 IP). |

Now that Tom Koehler finally earned his first career victory, he'll try to accomplish what a Miami Marlins starter has only done twice this season: win a second straight start.
Miami sends Koehler to the mound Wednesday as it hosts the Minnesota Twins, whose recently hot offense was quieted in Tuesday's series opener.
The eight-start winless streak by Koehler (1-5, 4.65 ERA) was the third-longest to begin a Marlins career. He put it to rest in a 2-1 victory at San Francisco on Thursday, allowing one run over seven innings of three-hit ball.
"Other than the day I met my wife, this is probably the happiest moment of my life. Definitely the happiest baseball moment," said Koehler, who turns 27 on Saturday.
Ricky Nolasco and Jose Fernandez are the only Miami starters to win two consecutive outings this season. Koehler had appeared in 21 games for the Marlins (26-50) before finally getting a victory.
"It definitely didn't weigh on my confidence, but to say I didn't think about it would be a lie," said Koehler, who allowed a career-worst nine runs and eight hits in 4 2-3 innings against St. Louis in his previous start. "Every time I went out there I wanted to win the game. I was wondering what it would take to do it."
Marcell Ozuna, whose two-run single in the eighth inning Thursday helped Koehler secure his win, also drove in two runs in a 4-2 victory Tuesday. The rookie outfielder is 21 for 48 (.438) with runners in scoring position.
"He's put together a lot of great at-bats, big at-bats, and he did again tonight," manager Mike Redmond said of Ozuna, who has eight RBIs over his last five games.
The Twins (34-39) scored 43 runs while going 5-3 from June 15-23, tied for the fifth-most in baseball during that stretch, before struggling Tuesday as they were held to one extra-base hit.
Joe Mauer didn't cool off, though, going 2 for 4 and now batting .419 during a seven-game hitting streak. He's hit .462 in his last seven interleague games and .375 in six career matchups with the Marlins.
Minnesota scheduled starter Scott Diamond (5-6, 5.27) has had a particularly tough time against NL competition this season, going 0-2 with a 9.22 ERA in three starts and yielding 26 hits in 13 2-3 innings.
He's given up 13 earned runs over 15 innings in his last three starts on the road, where he began the season 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA.
The left-hander earned just his second win in eight starts Thursday in an 8-4 home victory over the White Sox. He gave up four runs, with three earned all coming in the sixth of a 5 1-3-innings effort.
Diamond has failed to finish the sixth inning in seven of his last eight starts.
"Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way it went," Diamond told the team's official website. "The numbers don't look the best, but I'm happy with how I progressed through the game."
Logan Morrison was 2 for 4 on Tuesday, his fifth two-hit performance through 11 games since returning from knee surgery.
The Marlins are 2-8 in interleague play this year.
