Manager: Terry Collins (seventh season)
Who's new? No one of note
Who's gone? 1B James Loney, IF/OF Kelly Johnson, OF Alejandro De Aza, RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jonathon Niese
Projected lineup: CF Curtis Granderson (.237, 30 HR, 59 RBI), 3B David Wright (.226, 7, 14 in 37 games), LF Yoenis Cespedes (.280, 31, 86), RF Jay Bruce (.250, 33, 99 with Reds and Mets), 2B Neil Walker (.282, 23, 55), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.280, 23, 62), 1B Lucas Duda (.229, 7, 23 in 47 games), C Travis d'Arnaud (.247, 4, 15)
Rotation: RH Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA), RH Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04), RH Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86), LH Steven Matz (9-8, 3.40), RH Zack Wheeler or RH Robert Gsellman (4-2, 2.42) or RH Seth Lugo (5-2, 2.67)
Key relievers: RH Jeurys Familia (3-4, 2.55, 51/56 SV), RH Addison Reed (4-2, 1.97), RH Hansel Robles (6-4, 3.48), LH Jerry Blevins (4-2, 2.79), RH Fernando Salas (3-7, 3.91)
Hot spots: First base and third base. Duda missed 115 games last season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. When healthy, the veteran first baseman slugged a career-low .714. Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith, 21, could be in position to battle for the starting spot soon. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A. Franchise third baseman Wright doesn't have a hot prospect pushing him out the door, but how much game does he have left? The perennial All-Star only began throwing a baseball in February after an eight-month recovery from neck surgery. Wright had a degenerative back and has only played 75 games the last two years. Getting a full season from him at age 34 would be a shock.
Outlook: The Mets' championship window opened with a surprise World Series run in 2015, and their front office seems convinced it's still open. The club invested four years and $110 million to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. The Mets also exercised club options on Jay Bruce and Jose Reyes, and brought Neil Walker back on a qualifying offer. The result? Almost everyone returns from a club that lost a wild-card game to the Giants last October. The franchise is oozing young pitching ' Syndergaard might be the best right-hander on the planet ' but another World Series appearance might be too much to expect from a team that ranked 25th in runs per game last season. | | LA DODGERS: 2016: 91-71, first place, lost to Chicago Cubs in NLCS
Manager: Dave Roberts (second season)
Who's new? IF Logan Forsythe, OF Franklin Gutierrez, OF Brett Eibner, RHP Sergio Romo
Who's gone? OF Josh Reddick, C Carlos Ruiz, RHP Joe Blanton, RHP Jose De Leon, LHP J.P. Howell, RHP Louis Coleman, RHP Jesse Chavez
Projected lineup: 2B Logan Forsythe (.264, 20 HR, 52 RBI with Rays) or Chase Utley (.252, 14, 52), SS Corey Seager (.308, 26 72), 3B Justin Turner (.275, 27, 90), 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.285, 18, 90), RF Yasiel Puig (.263, 11, 45) or Andre Ethier (.208, 1, 2 in 16 games), C Yasmani Grandal (.228, 27, 72), CF Joc Pederson (.246, 25, 68), LF Andrew Toles (.314, 3, 16) or Trayce Thompson (.225, 13, 32)
Rotation: LH Clayton Kershaw (12-4, 1.69 ERA), RH Kenta Maeda (16-11, 3.48), LH Rich Hill (12-5, 2.12 with A's and Dodgers), RH Brandon McCarthy (2-3, 4.95), LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-1, 11.57 in one game) or LH Alex Wood (1-4, 3.73)
Key relievers: RH Kenley Jansen (3-2, 1.83, 47/53 SV), RH Pedro Baez (3-2, 3.04), LH Grant Dayton (0-1, 2.05), LH Luis Avilan (3-0, 3.20), RH Josh Fields (1-0, 4.63 with Astros and Dodgers), RH Sergio Romo (1-0, 2.64 with Giants), RH Chris Hatcher (5-4, 5.53)
Hot spots: Outfield and rotation. The Dodgers set a record for Disabled List trips in 2016. Ethier, who missed most of last season with a broken tibia, compared his recent back injury to 'Groundhog Day.' Even without Ethier there isn't room for Puig, Pederson, Toles, Thompson, Scott Van Slyke, Franklin Gutierrez and Brett Eibner. The pitching staff was decimated last year too, but a deep farm system produced a wave of capable reinforcements. If Scott Kazmir, McCarthy or Ryu can't pitch, Julio Urias, Brock Stewart and Ross Stripling can step in.
Outlook: After two straight winters laying low on the free agent market, Andrew Friedman bet big on his 2016 roster. Turner, Jansen, Hill and Utley all re-signed, giving the Dodgers a chance to prove last season's NLCS run wasn't a fluke. A full season of Kershaw and Hill ' to name just two ' would improve the team's chances of claiming a fifth straight division title. If the Dodgers want to take the next step, they'll have to get past the defending champion Chicago Cubs, a potential perennial powerhouse whose roster remains similarly intact. |
| | Surging Dodgers open homestand against Mets
LOS ANGELES -- After capping a six-game road trip with a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, the Los Angeles Dodgers kick off a nine-game homestand Monday against the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium. Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler (3-4, 4.48 ERA) will oppose Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw (9-2, 2.23 ERA) in the opener of a four-game set. The Dodgers (44-26) are on a roll, finishing 5-1 during their swing through Cincinnati and Cleveland. They completed their run with an 8-7 decision over the Reds on Sunday at Great American Ball Park. That allowed Los Angeles, which has won nine of its past 10 games, to finish 6-0 against Cincinnati this season and beat the Reds for the eighth consecutive time. "It got a little close for us," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, whose club allowed six straight runs before hanging on for the win. "Our bullpen has been lights out all year. Like I've been saying, (the Reds) have a really good offensive club. They put together some good at-bats. To get out of here with three (wins) is huge." Kershaw remains a huge part of the Dodgers' attack. In his last outing, Kershaw gave up two runs on six hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and two walks in a 7-5 win over the Indians on Tuesday. Kershaw hasn't faced the Mets since May 29, 2016, when he struck out 10 with no walks and yielded two runs on four hits in 7 2/3 innings in a 4-2 win by the Dodgers. Kershaw did not factor into the decision. In 13 career starts against New York, Kershaw is 8-1 with a 1.49 ERA. Wheeler endured the shortest outing of his career in his last start, getting battered for eight runs in 1 2/3 innings in a 14-3 romp by the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Wheeler said his command betrayed him. "I don't know where it was but I tried to find it and I couldn't," Wheeler said. "They laid off what I thought were a bunch of pretty good pitches, velocity wise. If you can't locate, you really can't set guys up." Wheeler, though, has been solid away from home. In 34 career road starts, Wheeler is 13-6 with a 2.84 ERA. He is 1-0 with a 2.76 ERA in five starts this season. This will be Wheeler's first contest against the Dodgers. The Mets (31-37) ended a three-game skid with a 5-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday behind Jacob deGrom, who fanned six, walked two and did not allow an earned run on three hits. DeGrom also hit his first career home run. The win prevented the Mets from suffering a four-game sweep by the National League East-leading Nationals. "It's a huge win for us because of who we've got to play (Monday) and who we've got to face," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "But this is the excitement about playing in this league, you know? You go from the Nationals and (Max) Scherzer and (Stephen) Strasburg and Gio (Gonzalez) to Clayton Kershaw tomorrow night. So you better not feel sorry for yourself or you're not going to have much of a chance. We've just got continue to go out and play the game right." |
