| | | PHILADELPHIA: 2016: 71-91, fourth place
Manager: Pete Mackanin (third season)
Who's new? LF Howie Kendrick, RF Michael Saunders, C Ryan Hanigan, OF Chris Coghlan, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Joaquin Benoit
Who's gone? C A.J. Ellis, 1B Ryan Howard, INF Andres Blanco, OF Peter Bourjos, RHP Charlie Morton, RHP David Hernandez
Projected lineup: 2B Cesar Hernandez (.294, 6 HR, 39 RBI, 17 SB), LF Howie Kendrick (.255, 8, 40, 10 with Dodgers), CF Odubel Herrera (.286, 15, 49, 25), 3B Maikel Franco (.255, 25, 88), RF Michael Saunders (.253, 24, 57 with Blue Jays), 1B Tommy Joseph (.257, 21, 47), C Cameron Rupp (.252, 16, 54), SS Freddy Galvis (.241, 3, 20, 17 SB)
Rotation: RH Jeremy Hellickson (11-14, 3.65 ERA), RH Aaron Nola (6-9, 4.78), RH Clay Buchholz (8-10, 4.78 with Red Sox), RH Vince Velasquez (8-6, 4.12), Jerad Eickhoff (11-14, 3.65)
Key relievers: Jeanmar Gomez (3-5, 4.85, 37/43 SV), Joaquin Benoit (2-0, 0.38 with Blue Jays), Hector Neris (4-4, 2.58), Pat Neshek (2-2, 3.06 with Astros), Edubray Ramos (1-3, 3.83)
Hot spots: Shortstop and closer. Philadelphia is waiting for the arrival of J.P. Crawford, the marquee name in the farm system. Crawford struggled in his first exposure to Triple-A last year, batting .250 with seven home runs in 123 games. In the meantime shortstop belongs to Galvis, who had an MLB-worst .274 on-base percentage last season. Crawford will get a chance once he's deemed ready. Gomez had a 19.13 ERA last September, possibly opening the door for Ramos, Neris or newcomer Benoit to seize the closer's job in spring training.
Outlook: On the long road back to respectability, the Phillies appear closer to the end than the beginning. Young starters Nola, Velasquez and Eickhoff showed flashes of brilliance last year. So did center fielder Herrera, who was rewarded with a five-year contract extension. He's the only player on the roster with a guaranteed contract beyond this year. That points to 2017 as a major transition year with prospects and veterans auditioning for jobs in 2018 and beyond, when the Phillies can be active in free agency. | | LA DODGERS: 2016: 91-71, first place, lost to Chicago Cubs in NLCS
Manager: Dave Roberts (second season)
Who's new? IF Logan Forsythe, OF Franklin Gutierrez, OF Brett Eibner, RHP Sergio Romo
Who's gone? OF Josh Reddick, C Carlos Ruiz, RHP Joe Blanton, RHP Jose De Leon, LHP J.P. Howell, RHP Louis Coleman, RHP Jesse Chavez
Projected lineup: 2B Logan Forsythe (.264, 20 HR, 52 RBI with Rays) or Chase Utley (.252, 14, 52), SS Corey Seager (.308, 26 72), 3B Justin Turner (.275, 27, 90), 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.285, 18, 90), RF Yasiel Puig (.263, 11, 45) or Andre Ethier (.208, 1, 2 in 16 games), C Yasmani Grandal (.228, 27, 72), CF Joc Pederson (.246, 25, 68), LF Andrew Toles (.314, 3, 16) or Trayce Thompson (.225, 13, 32)
Rotation: LH Clayton Kershaw (12-4, 1.69 ERA), RH Kenta Maeda (16-11, 3.48), LH Rich Hill (12-5, 2.12 with A's and Dodgers), RH Brandon McCarthy (2-3, 4.95), LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-1, 11.57 in one game) or LH Alex Wood (1-4, 3.73)
Key relievers: RH Kenley Jansen (3-2, 1.83, 47/53 SV), RH Pedro Baez (3-2, 3.04), LH Grant Dayton (0-1, 2.05), LH Luis Avilan (3-0, 3.20), RH Josh Fields (1-0, 4.63 with Astros and Dodgers), RH Sergio Romo (1-0, 2.64 with Giants), RH Chris Hatcher (5-4, 5.53)
Hot spots: Outfield and rotation. The Dodgers set a record for Disabled List trips in 2016. Ethier, who missed most of last season with a broken tibia, compared his recent back injury to 'Groundhog Day.' Even without Ethier there isn't room for Puig, Pederson, Toles, Thompson, Scott Van Slyke, Franklin Gutierrez and Brett Eibner. The pitching staff was decimated last year too, but a deep farm system produced a wave of capable reinforcements. If Scott Kazmir, McCarthy or Ryu can't pitch, Julio Urias, Brock Stewart and Ross Stripling can step in.
Outlook: After two straight winters laying low on the free agent market, Andrew Friedman bet big on his 2016 roster. Turner, Jansen, Hill and Utley all re-signed, giving the Dodgers a chance to prove last season's NLCS run wasn't a fluke. A full season of Kershaw and Hill ' to name just two ' would improve the team's chances of claiming a fifth straight division title. If the Dodgers want to take the next step, they'll have to get past the defending champion Chicago Cubs, a potential perennial powerhouse whose roster remains similarly intact. |
| | Phillies RHP Pivetta makes major-league debut vs. Dodgers
LOS ANGELES -- A childhood dream will become a reality Sunday for Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Nick Pivetta. Pivetta will make his major-league debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Pivetta will oppose Los Angeles Dodgers lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-4, 4.64) in the series finale at Dodger Stadium. Pivetta, who was acquired by the Phillies from the Washington Nationals in 2015 for former closer Jonathan Papelbon, was called up last week to replace injured starter Aaron Nola, who is on the disabled list with a strained lower back. Pivetta was initially scheduled to make his debut last Wednesday against the Miami Marlins, but the game was postponed because of rain and his start was pushed back. But that didn't dampen his enthusiasm. "It's so surreal being here," Pivetta told MLB.com on Saturday, referring to the major leagues. "It's met my expectations and more." Pivetta was 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA in three starts with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. The 24-year-old struck out 24 and walked two in 19 innings. "I'm happy that I'm throwing a day game tomorrow because I'll be able to wake up and I'll be on the mound," Pivetta said, according to MLB.com. "There's not a lot of sitting around and waiting. Right now, it's nice. I'm calm and easy. But I'm sure when I get out there it will be a lot different. There's going to be a lot more emotions." Pivetta becomes the fourth Phillies player to make his debut this season. He joins Mark Leiter Jr., who pitched in relief Friday, first baseman Brock Stassi and catcher Andrew Knapp, who both homered in Saturday's crushing 6-5 loss to the Dodgers. Pivetta's start could help the Phillies temporarily forget an unforgettable loss to the Dodgers. Yasiel Puig, rookie Cody Bellinger and pinch hitter Justin Turner hit consecutive home runs to lead off the ninth inning off closer Hector Neris. Adrian Gonzalez hit a walk-off single to clinch it for the Dodgers. "I don't know where this is going to take us, but sometimes in a season you look back at certain nights and games in a season that you can point to that the team kind of sustains some traction or gains some traction or kind of turned things around and really picked it up," manager Dave Roberts said. "This might be that day. It was nice to see these guys rewarded." Roberts would enjoy watching Ryu earn his first win. Ryu pitched well in his last start on April 24 in a 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants. He gave up a run on five hits in six innings with three strikeouts and a walk. Ryu hasn't faced the Phillies since April 22, 2014. He allowed two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings of a 3-2 loss by Los Angeles. In two career starts against Philadelphia, Ryu has a 2.77 ERA and failed to figure into a decision in either outing. In 28 career starts at Dodger Stadium, Ryu has posted a 11-9 record with a 3.26 ERA. |
