KEY GAME INFORMATION
COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Troy Tulowitzki benefits by having Carlos Gonzalez in the lineup. Gonzalez certainly benefits from Tulowitzki's presence, too.
But the Colorado Rockies may not benefit as much as you might think having those two sluggers together in the batting order. A healthy Tulo and CarGo by no means guarantees success, even if the Rockies are banking on bounce-back years from them to end a string of four straight losing seasons.
At least, the numbers seem to indicate as much. Since 2010, the Rockies are just 185-198 (.483 winning percentage) when Gonzalez and Tulowitzki are both in the starting lineup, according to STATS.
Still better than the alternative, though. Colorado is 175-252 (.410) when one or both don't start.
The takeaway is simple: This powerful tandem needs some help.
Colorado didn't make any splashy moves over the winter after a 66-96 season that led to sweeping changes in the front office. The biggest moves by new GM Jeff Bridich weren't to bolster a beleaguered pitching staff, but to bring in veteran catcher Nick Hundley and utility infielder Daniel Descalso.
Bridich believes Tulowitzki and Gonzalez can do more to get this team back on track than any sort of blockbuster deal.
If they stay on the field, that is.
''I'm not going to sit here and say we're a 90-win team or whatever it is. I'm just getting myself ready to play,'' Tulowitzki said. ''That's my goal, keep myself healthy.''
That's been anything but easy for the smooth-fielding shortstop. Over his career, he's had stints on the disabled list for a quadriceps tendon tear, lacerated right hand, broken left wrist and a groin injury. Last season, Tulowitzki played only 91 games before undergoing hip surgery.
''I feel great,'' said Tulowitzki, who turned 30 in October. ''But you guys judge and tell me.''
Like Tulowitzki, Gonzalez also feels fit again. The outfielder was limited to 70 games because of surgery to remove a small tumor in his left index finger and then another on his left knee.
''I'm feeling really good in the outfield, so that's a really good sign,'' Gonzalez said.
No doubt, Tulowitzki and Gonzalez fuel each other on offense. With Tulowitzki in the lineup since 2010, Gonzalez hit .307 with 89 homers spanning 402 games. Without him, Gonzalez's average was .291 with 30 homers in 185 games, according to STATS research.
And while Tulowitzki's batting average actually goes up without Gonzalez (.307 to .328), his slugging percentage dips a bit (.559 to .533).
''I think everything will take care of itself - if I play,'' Tulowitzki said.
With the NL West vastly improved, the Rockies aren't exactly in the conversation as contenders. But they do boast Tulowitzki and Gonzalez, along with NL batting champ Justin Morneau and Gold Glove third baseman Nolan Arenado.
''We're a nobody. That's OK with us,'' Arenado said. ''If we stay healthy, we're going to do some damage.''
Things to know as the Rockies try to get back on track:
TRADE RUMORS: Tulowitzki didn't pay too much attention to the trade rumors that popped up in the offseason. Should the Rockies fall out of contention early, those rumors could surface again. "I do know that rumors fly and rumors fly at a high rate these days with all the social media that's going on,'' Tulowitzki said.
YOUNG ROTATION: Lefty Jorge De La Rosa is dealing with a nagging groin injury this spring and righty Jhoulys Chacin was recently let go. That could pave the way for top prospects Eddie Butler and Jon Gray to work their way into the rotation. ''He's a talented kid,'' manager Walt Weiss said of Gray. ''Now it's just a matter of maturing and knowing he belongs.''
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Rockies had the worst road record (21-60) last season and hit almost 100 points lower away from home (.228) than at Coors Field (.322). ''Obviously there are some adjustments our hitters have to make, going away from our place,'' Weiss said.
GOLDEN INFIELD: Starter Kyle Kendrick certainly appreciates this infield, with Arenado, Tulowitzki and second baseman DJ LeMahieu all having earned a Gold Glove in their career. ''The defense is great,'' Kendrick said. ''You keep the ball down, you get ground balls, you're going to get outs.''
LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers have a new front office. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez, outfielder Matt Kemp, second-baseman Dee Gordon and pitcher Dan Haren are gone from a roster that won the NL West title last season.
Change was everywhere at the Dodgers' spring camp and all of it was designed to enhance their chances of achieving a goal that has never changed: Winning the World Series.
It eluded them last October in the NL Division series against the St. Louis Cardinals. It eluded them after the club was sold for $2.15 billion three years ago. It's eluded them since 1988.
''Everything we're doing is in the vein of trying to put ourselves in the best position to make it into October and then play as long as we can,'' said Andrew Friedman, the team's new president of baseball operations, who along with new general manager Farhan Zaidi employed an analytic approach to a winter makeover of a roster that had won back-to-back NL West titles.
Make no mistake, though, the changes were built around those who are back. At the top of the pitching order is Clayton Kershaw, the 2014 NL MVP and three-time Cy Young Award winner. Kershaw is armed with motivation to make amends for last fall's struggles. In right field, there's the young Yasiel Puig, an All-Star who was benched for some of the postseason.
A key to the makeover is in the heart of the infield, where Friedman and Zaidi acquired shortstop Jimmy Rollins from Philadelphia and second baseman Howie Kendrick from the Angels.
''Instant credibility,'' Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of the two veterans who some think will plug holes in what was an inconsistent defense. ''I think they bring a ton to the table for us. They create stability up the middle.''
There are questions whether the Dodgers sacrificed some offense in losing Ramirez' big bat and Gordon's speed. Ramirez signed with Boston. Gordon, a 2014 All Star, was traded to Miami. Meanwhile, Kemp's proven power is also gone. He was traded to San Diego for catcher Yasmani Grandal.
The Dodgers were willing to move Kemp because of what they've seen in 22-year-old Joc Pederson, who through 17 spring games was batting .417. Pederson appears to have the edge over veteran Andre Ethier as the starter in center field. With Carl Crawford in left and Puig in right, there's no room for Ethier, who said early in camp that he wants to be an everyday player.
Then there's the pitching staff. Kershaw and Zack Greinke are locks for the top of the rotation. After them, there are questions. No. 3 starter Hyun-Jin Ryu is likely to start the season on the disabled list because of an ailing left shoulder. Friedman signed projected starters Brandon McCarthy (four years at $48 million) and Brett Anderson (one year at $10 million), but each has a long history of injury.
With the uncertainty surrounding Ryu, it's not clear who will be the fifth starter. Joe Wieland, also acquired from San Diego in the deal for Kemp, was considered a leading possibility.
In the bullpen, the biggest question is about closer Kenley Jansen, who underwent surgery on Feb. 17 to have a growth removed from the fifth metatarsal on his left foot. He was expected to be out for 8-to-12 weeks. Until he's back, Mattingly said he might use a committee of pitchers to fill the role.
QUIET PUIG: Except for an occasional flip of the bat, it was a quiet camp for Puig, who is beginning his third season. Through 12 games, he was batting a modest .226 with 3 homers. ''I don't think his spring was that great last year either,'' Mattingly said. ''I'm not really concerned about his average or anything. I think he looks fine. He's hit some balls decent. He's a lot like other guys who know they're going to be around. They take their bats different than guys who are trying to show us what they can do.''
IMPATIENT KERSHAW: Kershaw never has much patience for questions about the World Series in the spring. ''Every team thinks they're going to win the World Series at this time of year,'' he said. ''That's everybody's goal and it should be. If you don't win the World Series, it's a failure.''
POWER ADJUSTMENT: First baseman Adrian Gonzalez has his own take on the Dodgers' altered offense. ''People are saying say that we lost power, but I think we just put the power in different spots of the lineup,'' he said.

*Rockies-Dodgers Preview* =========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Colorado (7-3) at Los Angeles (7-3), 9:10 p.m. EDT

After two full seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Zack Greinke still has NL West opponents stumped.

He'll look to continue both his mastery of the division and his strong start Saturday night against the visiting Colorado Rockies.

Greinke (1-0, 0.69 ERA) has been in complete command in two outings, giving up one run, seven hits and one walk over 13 innings. He won in Sunday's 7-4 victory at Arizona, throwing seven scoreless innings to improve to 19-1 with a 1.87 ERA in 29 starts against NL West foes since joining the Dodgers in 2013.

"That's a lot of outings," Greinke told MLB's official website. "I don't know why it is. But it could change real fast, too."

He had been 4-4 with a 5.03 ERA in 17 games against the division while with Kansas City, Milwaukee and the Los Angeles Angels. Greinke has turned in quality starts of 13 of his last 14 outings against NL West teams, limiting them to two home runs in 95 innings in that span.

The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.54 ERA in his last six meetings with Colorado, winning three straight.

The combination of Greinke and Los Angeles' productive offense, particularly at home, figures to be formidable. The Dodgers (7-3) have scored 31 runs during a five-game winning streak after Friday's 7-4 victory pulled them into a first-place tie with Colorado. They're averaging 5.7 runs at Chavez Ravine, where they can win six in a row in the same season for the first time since Aug. 28-Sept. 10, 2013. They've also outscored the Rockies 48-20 while taking seven straight home meetings, the longest such streak by either team in series history.

Adrian Gonzalez remains locked in, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs to lift his season average to .550. He has hit safely in all 10 games and gone 18 for 30 with all 11 of his RBIs at home. The first baseman has driven in 15 runs in his last 12 games versus Colorado, though he's 0 for 7 against scheduled starter Jordan Lyles.

Howie Kendrick was also 2 for 4 with his first home run and is batting .423 at home.

Colorado (7-3) had given up nine runs in its 6-0 road start, but Kyle Kendrick struggled, yielding six in 4 2-3 innings - only the second time this season a Rockies starter allowed more than two earned runs.

"They swung the bats pretty well, and I made some mistakes that got hit," Kyle Kendrick said.

Lyles (1-0, 2.25) has been solid, pitching six innings in each of his first two starts.

He'll try to shake off a rough history against the Dodgers, though, having gone 0-2 with a 7.13 ERA in three starts. He gave up five runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 7-4 loss at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 26.

Los Angeles' bullpen has surrendered one run in 19 innings at home since being charged with six runs - three earned - over three innings in an April 7 loss to San Diego.

Jimmy Rollins is 5 for 10 with two doubles against Lyles.
