| | | ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''
| | LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results. They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona. With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series. ''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January. The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks. ''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.'' First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.

*Cardinals-Dodgers Preview* ===========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
St. Louis (42-36) at Los Angeles (43-36), 10:10 p.m. EDT
Adam Wainwright's stellar outing five days ago helped the St. Louis Cardinals begin their current hot stretch, but it's been their offense that has provided a major spark during that run.
Their lineup likely is in for a tough challenge to continue that surge in the coming days.
St. Louis will face each of the three pitchers who have thrown no-hitters this season over its next five games beginning Thursday night, when Wainwright opposes Los Angeles Dodgers starter Josh Beckett at Chavez Ravine.
The Cardinals (43-36) have averaged 6.2 runs while winning four of five and got a two-run homer from Matt Adams and three hits from Matt Holliday in Wednesday's 9-6 win over Colorado.
"Overall, just a great, gutsy win," manager Mike Matheny said. "To be able to get guys on third with less than two outs and to get the run in, that's who we have to be."
The Cardinals' offense will have its work cut out for it as their road trip hits California, starting with this matchup that marks the first meeting since St. Louis beat Los Angeles in six games in last season's NL championship series.
Beckett (5-4, 2.28 ERA) threw this season's first no-hitter May 25 against Philadelphia. Clayton Kershaw, who struck out 15 Rockies in his no-hitter June 18, will take the mound in the finale of this four-game set Sunday.
The Cardinals begin a three-game series against San Francisco on Tuesday, with Tim Lincecum making his first start since no-hitting San Diego on Wednesday.
The first obstacle is Beckett, who is 3-3 with a 1.58 ERA over his last six starts after striking out eight in seven scoreless innings of Saturday's 4-1 win over the Padres.
"If I get seven (innings) and 100 pitches, that's a pretty successful night," Beckett said. "At this point in my career, I'm not a complete-game guy. My stuff is not as good. I try to battle with what I have and get through six or seven innings."
Wainwright (10-3, 2.08) has pitched through at least six innings in 13 of his 15 outings after giving up one run over eight in Saturday's 4-1 win over Philadelphia.
The right-hander's solid performance came after he was forced to miss a start due to elbow tendinitis. His ERA is second in the majors behind Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto's 1.86 mark.
"Unbelievable," Matheny said. "This guy has just been so good. Taking a little break and coming back as sharp as he is, I don't know why I'm surprised. To be as sharp as he is with a little time off, he looked like the Adam we've watched all season."
Wainwright is 4-4 with a 2.18 ERA in his last 11 starts - including the postseason - against the Dodgers (44-36), who have won seven of nine after beating Kansas City 5-4 on Wednesday.
A.J. Ellis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to bring in the deciding run, while Dee Gordon had four hits after going 4 for 23 over his previous seven - and also stole his 40th base.
"Our guys hung in there," manager Don Mattingly said. "We got behind. We threw some runs up there. They came back and we kept playing."
Yasiel Puig had two hits after going 1 for 14 over his previous four contests. He hit just .227 in the NLCS against the Cardinals, but went 5 for 9 at Dodger Stadium.
