| |  | LA ANGELS: HITTING: SS ERICK AYBAR will likely get another crack at the leadoff spot by default. DH/OF BOBBY ABREU can still draw walks and run a little. 2B HOWIE KENDRICK traded batting average for more power last year. He's still one of baseball's better middle infield bats. 1B ALBERT PUJOLS should benefit from DH-ing a couple of times a year. OF TORII HUNTER is fading fast and may not provide middle-of-the-order power. OF VERNON WELLS has a better chance than Hunter to bounce back, and the Angels have to be patient considering his monster contract. MARK TRUMBO will get a look at 3B. If he can't get it done, ALBERTO CALLASPO would start and Trumbo would back-up first and DH. Speedy OF PETER BOURJOS will start in left, and top prospect MIKE TROUT will soon replace free agents-to-be Abreu or Hunter. KENDRYS MORALES could DH regularly if his ankle is healthy. CHRIS IANNETTA is no Mike Napoli, but he's a monster upgrade over Jeff Mathis.
STARTING PITCHING: JERED WEAVER had a lot of things go right in 2011, and it's not hard to picture him as a Cy Young candidate again. But he faded late in the year, and may not belong in the upper echelon or pitchers. A cutter has led to DAN HAREN's rebirth. He's right there with Weaver, just a step behind the elite arms. C.J. WILSON may not get the same run support, but he should benefit from getting out of hitter-friendly Arlington; he had a 2.31 road ERA last year. ERVIN SANTANA never developed into a top-of-the-line starter, but he's become more consistent and settled in as a solid starter. Once a washed-out former prospect, JEROME WILLIAMS came back to the States from Taiwan and delivered three quality starts last September. He's not likely to have sustained success, but he does have the inside track for a rotation spot. Middling prospect GARRETT RICHARDS seems like the most likely candidate to step into the rotation in case of injury.
RELIEF PITCHING: JORDAN WALDEN will have the closer's role again entering the spring, but while he was overpowering he was also very shaky at times. He gave up seven runs over 2.2 innings in his last three appearances. RICH THOMPSON decided to lean on his cutter last year and the results were excellent. If Walden slips up, Thompson has to be in the closer conversation. LaTROY HAWKINS was solid with Milwaukee (2.42 ERA) and joins his ninth different team since 2003. He is expected to set up Walden as well. Lefty SCOTT DOWNS was far from dominant last year, despite his 1.34 ERA. But Scioscia does trust him in high-leverage situations, making him a possible fallback if Walden struggles. The Angels don't seem to have big plans for HISANORI TAKAHASHI, the most well-compensated long reliever in baseball. | | LA DODGERS: HITTING: The Dodgers were ravaged with injuries in 2010 and finished in the bottom third in the majors in runs (4.00 per game), homers (117) and OPS (.697). None of these poor numbers were the fault of OF MATT KEMP, who finished second in MVP voting with a .324 BA, 39 HR, 126 RBI and 40 steals. He says he wants a 50-50 season in 2012. 1B JAMES LONEY had the second-most homers (12) of any returning player, and batted .357 with a .608 SLG after August 1. If speedy SS DEE GORDON learns to be more patient at the plate (7 BB in 224 AB), he could score 90 runs from the top of the order. OF ANDRE ETHIER made headlines with a 30-game hit streak, but was once again dominated by lefties (.563 OPS). The team is counting on two veterans to drive in runs. 3B JUAN URIBE has been a walking infirmary lately, but still has 15-HR power, and OF JUAN RIVERA had 46 RBI in 219 AB after coming to the Dodgers. Two guys named Ellis, 2B MARK ELLIS and C A.J. ELLIS, will bat at the bottom of the order.
STARTING PITCHING: The Dodgers remain one of the better rotations in baseball, placing third in the majors in ERA (3.41) and fourth in opponents' BA (.242). The biggest reason for the success was the NL Cy Young and Triple Crown-winning performance of CLAYTON KERSHAW, who tied for the NL lead in wins (21) and topped all NL pitchers in ERA (2.28) and strikeouts (248). Fellow southpaw TED LILLY had a down year overall (12-14, 3.97 ERA), but had a fantastic final two months of the season (2.09 ERA, 0.93 WHIP). CHAD BILLINGSLEY notched his fifth straight season of double-digit wins, despite sporting a mediocre 4.21 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. AARON HARANG signed a two-year, $12M deal to join the Dodgers rotation. He won 14 games for the lowly Padres last year and finished with a career-best 3.64 ERA. CHRIS CAPUANO left the Mets for richer pastures (2-yr, $10M) of Los Angeles. Although he pitched well at spacious Citi Field (3.82 ERA, 1.21 WHIP), he was terrible on the road (5.42 ERA, 1.51 WHIP).
RELIEF PITCHING: Jonathan Broxton is gone, ending any kind of closer controversy the Dodgers may have been trying to avoid. JAVY GUERRA is the closer, and for good reason. He converted 21-of-23 save chances while posting a 2.31 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and allowing just two homers in 46.2 innings. If Guerra falters, manager Don Mattingly can afford to have a short leash with KENLEY JANSEN as his set-up man. Jansen led the majors with an insane 16.1 K-per-9 ratio and limited opponents to a .159 BA and .228 slugging percentage. At age 24, his upside is extremely high. MATT GUERRIER is a usually reliable reliever, but he is coming off a subpar 2011 campaign (4.07 ERA, 1.27 WHIP). |

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia's job was in jeopardy earlier this month, but that's no longer the case.
The focus on a managerial job in Southern California these days is squarely on the Los Angeles Dodgers' Don Mattingly.
Scioscia's Angels can record their first nine-game win streak in nine seasons Monday when they visit the Dodgers, with Zack Greinke facing his former team for Mattingly.
The Angels (23-27) owned the second-worst record in the AL at 15-24 when Scioscia received a vote of confidence from owner Arte Moreno.
Confidence isn't lacking for the Angels now. They rallied from a two-run deficit in the seventh inning for a 5-2 victory at Kansas City on Sunday, putting them in position to win nine straight for the first time since Aug. 18-27, 2004.
"We're rolling right now," said left fielder J.B. Shuck, 7 for 11 in his last three games.
Dodgers team president Stan Kasten said this weekend that Mattingly isn't in immediate danger of being fired. The club is in last place in the NL West, seven games behind first-place Arizona.
Matt Kemp is struggling with a .260 average and career-low .343 slugging percentage, and was benched in a 5-3 loss to St. Louis on Sunday.
"Today, Matt not playing is the best thing for him, it's the best thing for us," Mattingly told the Dodgers' official website.
Andre Ethier was benched three times by Mattingly during a six-game trip last week before he was reinstated to the lineup for all three games this past weekend. He went 1 for 10 as the Dodgers (20-28) lost twice to fall to 7-15 in May.
Mattingly knows the next four days against the Angels won't be any easier.
"We all know they have a talented club and they were going to put it together," he said. "I wish they would have just waited a little longer before they put it together."
Greinke (2-1, 3.48 ERA) went 6-2 with a 3.90 ERA for the Angels last year after being acquired from Milwaukee on July 27.
The free agent was considered the top arm on the market this offseason, with interest from the Dodgers, Angels and Texas. He said at his introductory Dodgers press conference that the Angels "never really got into it when the details came" to re-sign him, and he chose the $147 million, six-year deal with Mattingly's club.
The right-hander has pitched twice since returning from a broken left collarbone suffered April 11. This is the second straight outing he will face a former team after he allowed five runs over four-plus innings of a 5-2 defeat to the Brewers on Tuesday.
Greinke has dominated Josh Hamilton, who is 1 for 19 with nine strikeouts against him. He has never faced Mike Trout, 12 for 26 with 10 runs during a six-game hitting streak.
The Dodgers' Adrian Gonzalez has gone 5 for 7 with two homers and six RBIs over his last two contests and is 4 for 10 against C.J. Wilson (4-3, 3.39), who starts Monday for the Angels.
The left-hander ended a three-start losing streak Wednesday by giving up one run over eight innings with 10 strikeouts in a 7-1 win over Seattle.
The Angels have won 13 of their last 18 against the Dodgers, taking nine of the past 12 meetings on the road.
