| | | WASHINGTON: Manager: Dusty Baker (second season)
Who's new? CF Adam Eaton, C Matt Wieters, 1B Adam Lind, LHP Enny Romero, RHP Joe Blanton
Who's gone? CF Ben Revere, C Wilson Ramos, RHP Lucas Giolito, RHP Mat Latos, LHP Sean Burnett, RHP Mark Melancon, LHP Marc Rzepczynski, RHP Yusmeiro Petit
Projected lineup: CF Adam Eaton (.284, 14 HR, 59 RBI, 14 SB with White Sox), SS Trea Turner (.342, 13, 40, 33), 2B Daniel Murphy (.347, 25, 104), RF Bryce Harper (.243, 24, 86, 21 SB), 3B Anthony Rendon (.270, 20, 85), LF Jayson Werth (.244, 21, 69), 1B Ryan Zimmerman (.218, 15, 46) or Adam Lind (.239, 20, 58 with Mariners), C Matt Wieters (.243, 17, 66 with Orioles)
Rotation: RH Max Scherzer (20-7, 2.96 ERA), RH Tanner Roark (16-10, 2.83), LH Gio Gonzalez (11-11, 4.57), RH Stephen Strasburg (15-4, 3.60), RH Joe Ross (7-5, 3.43)
Key relievers: RH Shawn Kelley (3-2, 2.64), RH Joe Blanton (7-2, 2.48), RH Blake Treinen (4-1, 2.28), LH Sammy Solis (2-4, 2.41), RH Trevor Gott (0-0, 1.50), LH Oliver Perez (2-3, 4.95), LH Enny Romero (2-0, 5.91 with Rays)
Hot spots: First base and closer. Zimmerman posted a career-low .642 OPS last season and was often spelled by left-handed hitter Clint Robinson. Now 32, Zimmerman must prove he's worthy of regular playing time. Robinson and free-agent pickup Lind are next in line. The ninth inning could be a committee job too, though it's never been the Nationals' preferred method. After Kenley Jansen spurned D.C. for less money in L.A., their choices were limited. Kelley and Blanton have never closed in a combined 20 seasons in the majors, but both were stalwart set-up men last season. Joe Nathan and his 377 career saves are also in camp on a minor-league deal.
Outlook: Trading former top prospect Lucas Giolito to the White Sox for Eaton signaled the Nationals' championship ambitions. Their five-game loss to the Dodgers last October marked the third time in five years they've fallen just short of the NLCS. Washington begins the season with some familiar weapons ' a dangerous heart of the lineup, an experienced bench and exceptional starting pitching. Eaton is a huge upgrade over Revere at the plate, but Wieters will be pressed to replace Ramos' 3.5 wins above replacement (via FanGraphs). Failing to sign a marquee closer could prove fatal if Kelley, Nathan or someone else can't hold down the ninth inning. | | LA ANGELS: 2016: 74-88, fourth place
Manager: Mike Scioscia (18th season)
Who's new? C Martin Maldonado, 2B Danny Espinosa, INF Luis Valbuena, OF Ben Revere, OF Cameron Maybin, RHP Jesse Chavez, RHP Austin Adams, RHP Yusmeiro Petit
Who's gone? C Jett Bandy, C Geovany Soto, C Juan Graterol, OF Gregorio Petit, OF Rafael Ortega, RHP Jered Weaver, LHP C.J. Wilson, RHP Jhoulys Chacin, RHP Tim Lincecum, RHP Cory Rasmus, LHP Brett Oberholtzer
Projected lineup: 3B Yunel Escobar (.304, 5 HR, 39 RBI), RF Kole Calhoun (.271, 18, 75), CF Mike Trout (.315, 29, 100, 30 SB), DH Albert Pujols (.268, 31, 119), 1B C.J. Cron (.278, 16, 69) or Luis Valbuena (.260, 13, 40 in 90 games with Astros), LF Cameron Maybin (.315, 4, 43, 15 SB with Tigers), 2B Danny Espinosa (.209, 24, 72 with Nationals), SS Andrelton Simmons (.281, 4, 44, 10 in 124 games), C Martin Maldonado (.202, 8, 21 with Brewers) or Carlos Perez (.209, 5, 31)
Rotation: RH Garrett Richards (1-3, 2.34 in six starts), RH Matt Shoemaker (9-13, 3.88), LH Tyler Skaggs (3-4, 4.17), RH Ricky Nolasco (8-14, 4.42 with Twins and Angels), RH Jesse Chavez (2-2, 4.43 with Blue Jays and Dodgers) or RH Bud Norris (6-10, 5.10 for Braves and Dodgers)
Key relievers: RH Huston Street (3-2, 6.45, 9/12 SV), RH Cam Bedrosian (2-0, 1.12), RH Andrew Bailey (3-1, 5.36 6/7 SV for Phillies and Angels), RH J.C. Ramirez (2-1, 2.91), LH Jose Alvarez (1-3, 3.45), RH Austin Adams (0-0, 9.82 with Indians), RH Yusmeiro Petit (3-5, 4.30 with Nationals), RH Mike Morin (2-2, 4.37)
Hot spots: First base and fifth starter. Pujols started 23 games at first base last year, and will likely play fewer this year after offseason plantar fascia surgery. For now, Pujols is the primary DH, Cron is the first baseman, and Valbuena will begin the season on the DL with a strained hamstring. One problem: neither Cron (.698 OPS) nor Valbuena (.666) could hit lefties last year. The top candidates for fifth starter are similarly flawed. Chavez and Norris finished last season as relievers. Alex Meyer has six major league starts to his name. The Angels might need all of them at points in 2017.
Outlook: It's hard to be too optimistic about a team that's made one playoff appearance in seven years. Yet it's hard to be too pessimistic considering the hard-luck injuries that decimated the Angels in 2016, particularly on the pitching side. Still, 2017 figures to be a transition year. The back of the rotation is a patch job until Tommy John patients Andrew Heaney and Nick Tropeano return from rehab. The Angels will gain some financial freedom after the season, when Josh Hamilton finally comes off the books. Any positive momentum in the meantime would make Anaheim a more attractive destination for free agents. Getting back above .500 would be a realistic step in that direction; anything beyond that is a bonus |
| | Trout, Harper headline meeting between Nationals, Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Between the two of them, they have 11 All-Star Game selections, three MVPs and two Rookie of the Year awards. And neither one of them is older than 25. Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout, 25, and Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper, 24, have been the two best players in the majors the past few years, but they essentially could only admire one another from afar. Even though Trout first broke into the big leagues in 2011 and Harper in 2012, the two have matched up head to head only for a three-game series at Washington in April 2014. The Angels won two of three, and individually, Trout had a better series, going 5-for-14 with a double and a walk while Harper was 1-for-11 with a walk. They will get together again for a brief two-game series starting Tuesday night in Anaheim, but this time around, Harper's club is in a much better position in the standings. The Nationals (56-36) have a 10 1/2-game lead in the National League East, while the Angels (46-49) are struggling to stay in the American League wild-card race. The Angels will also get to see the new-and-improved Washington bullpen. Through the weekend, the Nationals had the highest bullpen ERA in the majors, but they acquired relievers Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson on Sunday in a trade with the Oakland A's. Both have experience as closers. "I talked to (Oakland manager) Bob Melvin, and he told me we're getting two of the best guys -- on and off the field," Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. "This is the second time I've had Madson. The last time, he didn't throw a pitch (because he was injured). They're both coming with a good reputation." Edwin Jackson will start Tuesday for Washington, making his debut with the club after starting the season with Baltimore. It is Jackson's second time around with the Nationals, having made 31 starts for them in 2012. He pitched out of the bullpen for the Orioles this season, producing a 3.00 ERA in three outings, but he was 5-6 with a 5.89 ERA in 13 starts for San Diego last season. The 33-year-old veteran is 3-4 with a 4.01 ERA in 11 career games (eight starts) against the Angels. Jackson is taking the rotation spot of Joe Ross, who will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. After signing a minor league deal with Washington in mid-June, Jackson went 2-0 with a 0.44 ERA in five games (four starts) for Triple-A Syracuse. Jesse Chavez will start for the Angels, his first career start vs. Washington. He has pitched against Washington out of the bullpen, going 0-0 with a 3.52 ERA in seven appearances. Chavez hasn't won a decision since June 6, going 0-4 with two no-decisions since. He hopes the latest stretch of struggles is temporary. "It's just something that's going to happen throughout a season," Chavez told mlb.com. "Through 162 (games), you're going to have good weeks and bad weeks." |
