KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is gone, the final remaining link to the New York Yankees' last dynasty. He left behind a team in transition, that failed to make the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time in a generation and is beset with an older core coming off injuries.
Alex Rodriguez's return from a season-long drug suspension is the most interesting aspect of the Yankees, who enter the season with a health-challenged rotation, rebuilt bullpen and lineup that was among the least potent in the American League last year.
''I think we've added a lot of good young arms,'' manager Joe Girardi said. ''Added some good young players, as well. I think we've really seen an improvement in our young minor league players and the impact they are capable of having. I think we will continue to see that for years to come.''
If the Yankees founder, young players could be given more of a chance. Top prospects include pitcher Luis Severino, infielders Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder, and outfielder Aaron Judge.
But first, many of the old, beaten-up players will be given a chance to show they have something left.
Left fielder Brett Gardner (abdomen) and right fielder Carlos Beltran (elbow) return from surgery, and Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) missed a significant stretch of spring training. First baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist) hit .216 last year, 143rd among 148 major league qualifiers in his return from an injury that sidelined him for most of 2013.
After signing a big-money deal with the Yankees, catcher Brian McCann was hitting just .209 in May before improving in the second half to finish at .232. Third baseman Chase Headley, acquired from San Diego in July, was given a new contract by the Yankees because they have no confidence in A-Rod's ability to play the field. New York also re-signed Stephen Drew under the theory he can't be as bad as he was in 2014.
Didi Gregorius, obtained from Arizona in a trade, is the primary offensive newcomer and replaces Jeter at shortstop. Left-handed-hitting Garrett Jones hopes to earn at-bats.
''Jeter is still Jeter. Everything that everybody is going to talk about is Jeter,'' Gregorius said. ''But for me - I'm learning and I'm there just to play the game, so just trying to focus on the game and trying to win every game, that's all I can say, not worrying about what's going on around.''
LIGHTNING ROD: The three-time AL MVP, who turns 40 on July 27, has not played a full season since 2007 because the suspension, operations on both hips and other injuries. New York owes him $61 million over the final three seasons of his contract, so he will be given a chance to earn at-bats as a DH, especially against left-handed starters.
RICKETY ROTATION: Masahiro Tanaka missed 2 1/2 months in his first season because of a small elbow ligament tear the Yankees say didn't need surgery. CC Sabathia, limited to eight starts last year, has to show he can pitch effectively with reduced velocity. Michael Pineda, back from shoulder surgery, had a 1.89 ERA in 13 starts last year but missed a long stretch because of the shoulder. New York hopes hard-throwing Nathan Eovaldi can learn to be effective after his acquisition from Miami. With Chris Capuano on the DL and Ivan Nova not expected back from Tommy John surgery until May or June, Adam Warren was the leading contender for fifth starter.
BULLPEN: A strong point last year, the Yankees rebuilt the `pen. David Robertson was allowed to leave for the Chicago White Sox, and David Phelps, Shawn Kelley and Shane Greene were traded. Lefty Andrew Miller and Scott Baker were signed, and Justin Wilson and Chris Martin acquired in trades. Miller and Dellin Betances competed in spring training to replace Robertson as closer.
HOPS: The Yankees are sharing their ballpark with Major League Soccer's expansion New York City team, and Teixeira complained before the soccer team's home opener that the infield would get torn up, leading to bad hops.
LA ANGELS: ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - The Los Angeles Angels had the majors' best record last year, and they return this season with baseball's best player at the center of largely the same roster.
Yet the Angels accomplished none of their biggest goals last year when they were swept out of the division series, and their sky-high payroll makes those unmet expectations even more painful.
So are the Angels a legitimate power or an unbalanced, aging team with a rapidly closing window? Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and manager Mike Scioscia can only figure it out by going back to work to find the right combination to contend again.
The Angels are difficult to evaluate because everything depends on the window from which they're viewed.
They have an enormous payroll topped by some of baseball's highest-paid players at their positions - Pujols, Josh Hamilton, C.J. Wilson and Trout, the reigning AL MVP. For all that money, consistent winning and championship contention is expected, which means the Angels' inability to win a single playoff game in five seasons is a disaster.
Yet the Angels still won 98 games last season despite losing budding ace Garrett Richards to a knee injury in August, and general manager Jerry Dipoto has restocked his roster while breathing life into what was considered the majors' worst farm system in recent years. From the bullpen to the heart of the order, Los Angeles has an undeniably solid complement of talent around Trout, the best player in baseball at 23 years old.
But just when the Angels look sharp, new worries arise. The biggest problem in 2015 is the fate of Hamilton, who is likely to be hit by a lengthy suspension for an apparent drug relapse before opening day. His recovery from shoulder surgery would have kept him out anyway.
Hamilton still has three years left on his $125 million contract, but at least his absence is cushioned by the grim fact that he has made no significant, consistent impact on the Angels' offense in two expensive seasons. Los Angeles acquired veteran Matt Joyce from Tampa Bay in the offseason, and returning outfielder Collin Cowgill also can fill in capably.
Some other things to watch when the Angels embark on their 55th season:
WHAT'S ON SECOND: The Angels' biggest problem is at second base, where Howie Kendrick leaves a gaping hole after nearly a decade entrenched in the job. With just a year left on Kendrick's contract, Dipoto traded him to the Dodgers to get promising young starter Andrew Heaney. But the lineup that led the AL in runs has lost its top hit producer - yes, Kendrick had even more than Trout - with no real plan to replace him. Josh Rutledge, Grant Green and Johnny Giavotella are among the light-hitting infielders getting a look in the spring, but none is likely to replace Kendrick's big bat.
RICH MAN: After leading the AL in RBIs and runs last season while winning the MVP trophy, Trout already has accomplished more than pretty much any 23-year-old in baseball history - and he's about to get paid for it. The outfielder's six-year, $144.5 million contract begins this year, albeit at a modest $5.25 million salary for 2015 before the deal skyrockets. Yet Trout hasn't shown any signs of complacency in the offseason, and he is working aggressively with hitting coach Don Baylor on limiting his strikeouts, which jumped to an AL-worst 184 last year.
WEAKNESS TO STRENGTH: After years of ineptitude, the Angels are confident their bullpen will again be among the majors' tops this season. Closer Huston Street and setup man Joe Smith are among the best in the business, while Mike Morin is expected to move into a bigger role with Kevin Jepsen's departure. Fernando Salas, Vinny Pestano and newcomer Cesar Ramos - Jered Weaver's college teammate - all are angling for innings, likely making the bullpen into a source of comfort for Scioscia.
GOTTA PITCH: The Angels' rotation has a high ceiling and a low floor - just like the rest of this team. Weaver and Wilson are on top of the rotation, but many believe both 30-something veterans took a step backward last season. Richards faces an uncertain mid-April return from a long rehabilitation, while Matt Shoemaker must prove he can replicate his shocking 16-victory performance that made him second on AL Rookie of the Year voting. Scioscia also must pick a fifth starter among Heaney, Hector Santiago and Nick Tropeano.

*Yankees-Angels Preview* ========================

New York (41-34) at Los Angeles (38-37), 10:05 p.m. EDT

CC Sabathia had not allowed a homer to Albert Pujols and Mike Trout until this year in what was a rare victory for the New York Yankees left-hander.

C.J. Wilson gave up a season-high three homers in that defeat for the Los Angeles Angels, with Brett Gardner and Chris Young going deep for New York.

No southpaw gives up more homers than Sabathia while hitting the longball is a recipe for beating Wilson heading into their rematch Monday night in Anaheim in the opener of a three-game series.

Sabathia (3-7, 5.65 ERA) has baseball's highest ERA among left-handers and has allowed 17 homers. Pujols and Trout took him deep in his 6-2 victory June 7, with those solo homers the only runs allowed in six innings.

Pujols had been 1 for 12 against Sabathia prior to that contest while Trout was 3 for 8 with two doubles. Those hitters have combined for 42 homers in 2015, including an AL-best 12 by Pujols in June.

Wilson (5-6, 3.92) will oppose Sabathia again after yielding all six runs in seven innings - with Gardner, Young and Jose Pirela all going deep.

Gardner is batting .489 with four homers and 11 RBIs in his last 10 games.

Young went 0 for 3 in Sunday's 3-1 loss at Houston to snap a career-best 10-game streak in which he batted .459 with three homers and 10 RBIs. He is hitting .388 against left-handers for one of baseball's best marks.

Nine of the 10 homers off Wilson have come in the eight losses in which he has started.

Sabathia has not received a decision in three outings since he beat the Angels. He gave up six runs over 4 2-3 innings in Tuesday's 11-6 defeat to Philadelphia.

Sabathia is 1-2 with a 7.07 ERA in his last seven starts, failing to record an out past the sixth inning in all of them. Right-handed hitters are batting .339 against him.

"I've seen him too many times not to believe in him," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's frustrating for him but as I said, we'll continue to work at it and we'll get it right."

Sabathia is 6-3 with a 2.67 ERA in nine starts against the Angels since joining the Yankees, including two wins in the 2009 ALCS.

Wilson seeks to avoid losing consecutive home outings for the first time since July 28-Aug. 13, 2012. He was tagged for a season-high seven earned runs in 3 1-3 innings in Tuesday's 13-3 loss to the Astros.

"When you give up that many runs I guess in that short of an outing, not a lot is working," Wilson said.

The left-hander is 4-1 with a 3.02 ERA in seven starts against New York with Los Angeles. Alex Rodriguez is 3 for 24 in this matchup in regular-season play and Mark Teixeira is 2 for 25.

New York (41-35) swept three games from Los Angeles from June 5-7 and has captured 11 of the last 14 meetings. The Yankees split four in Houston to start this seven-game trip.

The Angels (39-37) improved to 4-2 on a nine-game homestand when Kole Calhoun scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday in a 3-2 win over Seattle.
