| |  | HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''
| | LA ANGELS: ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton didn't exactly fit in right away with the Los Angeles Angels after they accepted owner Arte Moreno's lavish free-agent contracts.
Now that both sluggers feel much more comfortable and confident in Orange County, they know it's time the Angels started getting more wins for their money.
The Angels' four-year absence from the playoffs is embarrassing for an organization with a sky-high payroll and equally lofty expectations, but they seem capable of ending the drought if the club's various pieces finally add up properly.
Pujols and Hamilton are full of spring optimism after those disappointing 2013 efforts, while superstar Mike Trout is back for the third full major league campaign in his already remarkable career.

It's been over 50 years since the Los Angeles Angels racked up 11 consecutive wins, the longest streak in team history.
Manager Mike Scioscia's club has a chance to match that run as it closes its season series against the visiting Houston Astros on Sunday.
Mike Trout homered twice and Jered Weaver earned his AL-leading 17th win in Saturday's 5-2 victory. Los Angeles (93-55), which has hit .329 while outscoring opponents by an average of 5.2 runs during its 10-game run, won 11 straight June 16-26, 1964.
The major league-leading Angels have also taken eight straight home games from the Astros by a 56-23 margin. Los Angeles is 11 games ahead of Oakland for the AL West lead with 14 to play and its magic number to clinch is four.
"The offense is clicking and the pitching staff's been unbelievable," said Trout, who has five extra-base hits - two homers - in seven at-bats over the last two days. "We give them a comfortable lead and they go out there and pitch."
The Angels now turn to Hector Santiago (5-7, 3.38 ERA), who's won his last five decisions behind a 2.29 ERA. The left-hander threw five innings of one-run ball to win 9-3 at Texas on Tuesday.
Santiago has gone fewer than six innings in four straight starts and seven of his last nine.
"I feel like I can go more, but hey, who am I? I'm just out here to give us a chance to win; that's what I'm doing right now," he told MLB's official website. "I want to go six or seven innings. ... You just go inside and get your work done, and get ready for the next one."
Santiago is 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA in two starts against the Astros. They tagged him for five runs in as many innings in an 11-5 road loss July 5.
Houston (65-83) dropped to 4-4 on its nine-game road trip despite two more hits from Jose Altuve. The All-Star second baseman leads the majors with 204, six shy of matching Craig Biggio's franchise record set in 1998.
Houston's Dallas Keuchel (10-9, 3.06) saw his winless drought reach seven starts after allowing three runs over 6 2-3 innings at Oakland last Sunday. The left-hander has recorded a quality start in all but one of those outings, with the Astros winning his last three.
"When I'm contributing to the team, give us a chance to win, and we're winning games, that's all that matters," he said. "I just do my job, and see what happens."
Keuchel is 3-1 in six starts against the Angels despite a 5.86 ERA. He hasn't faced them since giving up a season worst-tying five runs and career-high 13 hits over five innings in a 7-6 road loss July 4.
Keuchel has had trouble with several of Los Angeles' top hitters, including Howie Kendrick (8 for 16), Albert Pujols (5 for 10) and David Freese (6 for 8). All three players have taken him deep.
Kendrick is 22 for 44 with seven extra-base hits - two homers - and 14 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak. He's hit .380 to go with 16 RBIs in helping Los Angeles take 12 of 18 from Houston this year.
Angels closer Huston Street returned to action Saturday for the first time since Sept. 6, working a scoreless ninth for his 14th save since coming over from San Diego.
