KEY GAME INFORMATION
CLEVELAND: HITTING: SS ASDRUBAL CABRERA's reinvented swing, modeled after Ben Zobrist, likely led to his power surge. OF GRADY SIZEMORE is back on a one-year deal, so he has plenty of financial incentive to stay healthy. But he will begin the season on the DL after back surgery. OF SHELLEY DUNCAN is expected to get more playing time in replacing Sizemore, but speedy OF EZEQUIEL CARRERA is also waiting for his shot. Injuries and off-the-field issues spoiled OF SHIN SOO-CHOO's 2011, but there's a good chance he bounces back . . . OF MICHAEL BRANTLEY does everything well enough to get a regular gig in center. C CARLOS SANTANA is developing into a middle-of-the-order run producer. DH TRAVIS HAFNER can't be trusted to stay healthy or to produce power numbers. After another down year, 1B MATT LaPORTA will have to sit and watch CASEY KOTCHMAN start at first more often than not. 3B LONNIE CHISENHALL will get his chance to play every day, but dwindling production the past two years is a concern. 2B JASON KIPNIS will get first crack at second base. He's got nice pop for a middle infielder.
STARTING PITCHING: JUSTIN MASTERSON's strikeout rate continues to decline, and he still gets hit hard by lefties. Still, his strong groundball rate guarantees he's a solid middle-of-the-rotation arm at worst. His velocity dropped last year, and there's no telling if UBALDO JIMENEZ will ever regain his early 2010 form. He's the definition of high-risk, high-reward. DEREK LOWE was a decent middle-of-the-rotation arm in the National League, but now he must adjust to facing superior A.L. lineups . . . Healthy again, JOSH TOMLIN will remain in the rotation. He's hittable, throwing strikes and relying on his defense. Former Twins hurler KEVIN SLOWEY rounds out the staff. Although he posted a 6.67 ERA last year, Slowey has exhibited pinpoint control in his career with just 84 walks in 532.2 innings, tallying a .470 K-to-BB ratio. JEANMAR GOMEZ is a decent minor league arm, but his ceiling is low (long term and in the immediate future). CARLOS CARRASCO may not pitch in the bigs this year after Tommy John surgery.
RELIEF PITCHING: CHRIS PEREZ is entrenched as the closer, but he was a bit of a disappointment last season. His velocity dropped slightly, and his strikeout rate fell off a cliff. If Perez gets hurt, VINNIE PESTANO is next in line for saves. He may be undersized, but his stuff is overpowering. TONY SIPP proved he can get out righties too, but his value is as a lefty-on-lefty guy. Ditto for sidearmer JOE SMITH, who is deadly on righties. But it would be a surprise if he shut down lefties for a second straight year. RAFAEL PEREZ has been hampered by shoulder soreness in Spring Training, but the lefty should once again be serviceable in the late innings this year.
LA ANGELS: HITTING: SS ERICK AYBAR will likely get another crack at the leadoff spot by default. DH/OF BOBBY ABREU can still draw walks and run a little. 2B HOWIE KENDRICK traded batting average for more power last year. He's still one of baseball's better middle infield bats. 1B ALBERT PUJOLS should benefit from DH-ing a couple of times a year. OF TORII HUNTER is fading fast and may not provide middle-of-the-order power. OF VERNON WELLS has a better chance than Hunter to bounce back, and the Angels have to be patient considering his monster contract. MARK TRUMBO will get a look at 3B. If he can't get it done, ALBERTO CALLASPO would start and Trumbo would back-up first and DH. Speedy OF PETER BOURJOS will start in left, and top prospect MIKE TROUT will soon replace free agents-to-be Abreu or Hunter. KENDRYS MORALES could DH regularly if his ankle is healthy. CHRIS IANNETTA is no Mike Napoli, but he's a monster upgrade over Jeff Mathis.
STARTING PITCHING: JERED WEAVER had a lot of things go right in 2011, and it's not hard to picture him as a Cy Young candidate again. But he faded late in the year, and may not belong in the upper echelon or pitchers. A cutter has led to DAN HAREN's rebirth. He's right there with Weaver, just a step behind the elite arms. C.J. WILSON may not get the same run support, but he should benefit from getting out of hitter-friendly Arlington; he had a 2.31 road ERA last year. ERVIN SANTANA never developed into a top-of-the-line starter, but he's become more consistent and settled in as a solid starter. Once a washed-out former prospect, JEROME WILLIAMS came back to the States from Taiwan and delivered three quality starts last September. He's not likely to have sustained success, but he does have the inside track for a rotation spot. Middling prospect GARRETT RICHARDS seems like the most likely candidate to step into the rotation in case of injury.
RELIEF PITCHING: JORDAN WALDEN will have the closer's role again entering the spring, but while he was overpowering he was also very shaky at times. He gave up seven runs over 2.2 innings in his last three appearances. RICH THOMPSON decided to lean on his cutter last year and the results were excellent. If Walden slips up, Thompson has to be in the closer conversation. LaTROY HAWKINS was solid with Milwaukee (2.42 ERA) and joins his ninth different team since 2003. He is expected to set up Walden as well. Lefty SCOTT DOWNS was far from dominant last year, despite his 1.34 ERA. But Scioscia does trust him in high-leverage situations, making him a possible fallback if Walden struggles. The Angels don't seem to have big plans for HISANORI TAKAHASHI, the most well-compensated long reliever in baseball.

*Indians-Angels Preview* ========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

Cleveland (66-57) at Los Angeles (55-67), 10:05 p.m. EDT

Mike Trout and Jered Weaver have been two of the few bright spots for the disappointing Los Angeles Angels, though neither gave the team anything to celebrate the last time they left the field.

Trout's status is uncertain due to an injury, and Weaver will be looking to bounce back from one of the worst outings of his career as Los Angeles hosts the Cleveland Indians on Monday night.

After a terrific 2012 season that earned him AL Rookie of the Year, Trout has followed it up by hitting .333 and has reached base in 40 straight games after going 2 for 3 on Sunday.

Trout left the Angels' 7-5 loss to Houston, though, after experiencing tightness in his hamstring running out a double in the third. He exited after flying out in the fifth, and he's uncertain if he'll be ready to play in the series opener.

"It's all right. I'm just sore," Trout said. "It's not like it popped or anything. It was just a little grabbing, so it shouldn't be too serious. I didn't really feel anything until I got to second base. I'll see how it is (Monday)."

Mark Trumbo and Josh Hamilton homered Sunday, but Los Angeles (55-68) fell for the sixth time in eight games and has dropped 22 of 34.

Weaver (7-6, 3.49 ERA) had gone 4-0 with a 1.49 ERA over his previous five starts after yielding two runs in seven innings of a 5-2 win over Cleveland on Aug. 9. That hot stretch ended Wednesday, though, when he allowed a career worst-tying nine runs in five innings of an 11-3 loss to the New York Yankees.

He had given up 10 runs over his previous seven outings combined.

"You're going to have some rough games over the course of the season," Weaver said. "Nothing I can do. Can't hang my head. Turn the page and concentrate on the next start coming in."

The right-hander hasn't had much trouble with the Indians in recent seasons, going 6-1 with a 1.31 ERA in the last eight starts against them, with six of those outings being in Cleveland. Weaver, though, is 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA in six career home starts versus the Indians, who have dropped nine of 13 after falling 7-3 to Oakland on Sunday.

Ryan Raburn homered as Cleveland (66-58) fell seven games behind Detroit in the AL Central race.

"It's go time," said second baseman Jason Kipnis, who extending his hitting streak to six. "We don't have time to sit around and fell sorry for ourselves about losing two of three here. It's time to take care of business."

The Indians will look to bounce back with help from Danny Salazar, who will be making his fourth career start.

Salazar (1-1, 4.08) allowed three runs - all scoring on two home runs - in four innings of a 3-0 loss to Minnesota in his most recent outing last Monday. The 23-year-old rookie struck out five, though, and has 22 in 17 2-3 innings.

"This kid's going to be pitching for a long time, and we just thought (we would) give him a little bit of a blow rather than let him grind through one more inning," manager Terry Francona said. "His stuff is very good. He's willing to compete. This kid, he's the real deal, he just needs experience. We just need to monitor right now."

The right-hander will be making his first start against Los Angeles, which had won four straight in the series prior to Cleveland's 6-5 win Aug. 11.
