| | | NY YANKEES: HITTING: Despite his decline from mediocrity into downright counter-productivity, SS DEREK JETER gets to hit atop the best lineup in baseball. Off an MVP-caliber season, OF CURTIS GRANDERSON is a true star. His average is mediocre, but his power is elite and the Yankees are letting him run when on base. After two years with a sub-.260 average, 1B MARK TEIXEIRA's talent seems to be fading. He still puts up huge power numbers playing in a bandbox. Coming off knee and thumb injuries, 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ is a serious injury risk hitting in the middle of this lineup. 2B ROBINSON CANO will once again see as many RBI chances as anyone. He's been great in those situations the past two seasons. OFs NICK SWISHER and BRETT GARDNER offer power and SBs, respectively, though the Yankees may look to upgrade if they continue to post lackluster numbers. C RUSSELL MARTIN will get plenty of playing time now that Jesus Montero is in Seattle. Veteran slugger RAUL IBANEZ is the new DH in town, and will love hitting towards the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium. STARTING PITCHING: CC SABATHIA struggled late last year and has logged a ridiculous number of innings over the past five years. He's a top-10 starter in the majors, but is starting to pass his prime. Newcomers HIROKI KURODA and MICHAEL PINEDA will both stabilize what was a shaky rotation last year. Kuroda, 37, posted a 3.07 ERA with the Dodgers and the 23-year-old Pineda has unlimited upside, fanning 173 batters in 171 innings with Seattle last season. IVAN NOVA benefitted from nearly nine runs of support per game. He keeps the ball down often enough to thrive in the Bronx, just without many strikeouts. PHIL HUGHES' stuff has regressed greatly since his days as a top prospect. He's trying to overcome conditioning problems this offseason. MANNY BANUELOS and DELLIN BETANCES are great prospects who may get a chance to start MLB games later this season. RELIEF PITCHING: Trust MARIANO RIVERA to stay dominant until proven wrong. He was better in 2011 than he was in 2010 despite some velocity slippage. DAVID ROBERTSON has a firm hold on eighth-inning duties after an All-Star season. He's second in line for saves. RAFAEL SORIANO wasn't a total bust, as he did just fine after a rough April. He's settled into the seventh-inning role since Robertson is more trusted that he is. After Tommy John surgery, JOBA CHAMBERLAIN is aiming to be back this June. Middle reliever CORY WADE was reliable last year, and has a chance to rack up some vulture wins if he keeps going strong. | | LA ANGELS: HITTING: SS ERICK AYBAR will likely get another crack at the leadoff spot by default. DH/OF BOBBY ABREU can still draw walks and run a little. 2B HOWIE KENDRICK traded batting average for more power last year. He's still one of baseball's better middle infield bats. 1B ALBERT PUJOLS should benefit from DH-ing a couple of times a year. OF TORII HUNTER is fading fast and may not provide middle-of-the-order power. OF VERNON WELLS has a better chance than Hunter to bounce back, and the Angels have to be patient considering his monster contract. MARK TRUMBO will get a look at 3B. If he can't get it done, ALBERTO CALLASPO would start and Trumbo would back-up first and DH. Speedy OF PETER BOURJOS will start in left, and top prospect MIKE TROUT will soon replace free agents-to-be Abreu or Hunter. KENDRYS MORALES could DH regularly if his ankle is healthy. CHRIS IANNETTA is no Mike Napoli, but he's a monster upgrade over Jeff Mathis. STARTING PITCHING: JERED WEAVER had a lot of things go right in 2011, and it's not hard to picture him as a Cy Young candidate again. But he faded late in the year, and may not belong in the upper echelon or pitchers. A cutter has led to DAN HAREN's rebirth. He's right there with Weaver, just a step behind the elite arms. C.J. WILSON may not get the same run support, but he should benefit from getting out of hitter-friendly Arlington; he had a 2.31 road ERA last year. ERVIN SANTANA never developed into a top-of-the-line starter, but he's become more consistent and settled in as a solid starter. Once a washed-out former prospect, JEROME WILLIAMS came back to the States from Taiwan and delivered three quality starts last September. He's not likely to have sustained success, but he does have the inside track for a rotation spot. Middling prospect GARRETT RICHARDS seems like the most likely candidate to step into the rotation in case of injury. RELIEF PITCHING: JORDAN WALDEN will have the closer's role again entering the spring, but while he was overpowering he was also very shaky at times. He gave up seven runs over 2.2 innings in his last three appearances. RICH THOMPSON decided to lean on his cutter last year and the results were excellent. If Walden slips up, Thompson has to be in the closer conversation. LaTROY HAWKINS was solid with Milwaukee (2.42 ERA) and joins his ninth different team since 2003. He is expected to set up Walden as well. Lefty SCOTT DOWNS was far from dominant last year, despite his 1.34 ERA. But Scioscia does trust him in high-leverage situations, making him a possible fallback if Walden struggles. The Angels don't seem to have big plans for HISANORI TAKAHASHI, the most well-compensated long reliever in baseball. |

*Yankees-Angels Preview* ========================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
New York (37-28) at Los Angeles (28-38), 10:05 p.m. EDT
Andy Pettitte earned his 250th career victory his last time out.
He possibly could have reached the milestone a bit quicker if not for his struggles against the Los Angeles Angels.
Pettitte gets the nod Friday night as the New York Yankees visit the Angels in the opener between two teams trying to turn things around.
Pettitte (5-3, 3.82 ERA) became the 47th major league pitcher to reach 250 wins on Saturday, throwing 7 1-3 innings of one-run ball while allowing three hits in a 3-1 victory at Seattle.
"We tried to make adjustments and he adjusted right back," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said of Pettitte. "He's amazing."
The left-hander hasn't been as amazing against the Angels since 2008, going 2-5 with a 5.83 ERA in nine regular-season starts. He surrendered five runs and nine hits over seven innings in a 5-1 loss at Los Angeles on May 29 of last season.
Better results from Pettitte versus Los Angeles on Friday would be timely for New York (37-29), which was swept in three games at Oakland, capped by a 3-2 loss in 18 innings Thursday. Mariano Rivera allowed the game-winning single to Nate Freiman, and the Yankees were 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position and finished the series 5 for 26 in such situations.
"I think it's probably a little more frustrating because you can look at how you had an opportunity here and an opportunity there," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "A lot of guys probably look at that, but it doesn't change the result."
The Angels (28-38) are coming off a 9-5 comeback win at Baltimore on Wednesday, but have still dropped nine of 12. Opening a 10-game homestand, they'll look to build on a victory that saw a six-run seventh inning highlighted by a three-run homer from Albert Pujols. The three-time NL MVP hit .368 with two homers in nine games against the Yankees last season.
"Real good at-bats," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Drew some walks, got into some good hitting counts. It was good to see our offense ... with some clutch hits at the end."
Starter C.J. Wilson (4-5, 4.02) has been tagged with a loss in two of his last three starts while recording a 6.35 ERA, but he's 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA in his last three outings versus New York.
He needed 104 pitches to get through five innings in a 7-2 loss at Boston on Saturday, allowing four runs, eight hits and three walks.
"That's pretty garbage," the left-hander said. "It's disappointing"
Since 2010, Robinson Cano is slugging .723 with 10 home runs and 22 RBIs in 26 contests against Los Angeles, and is 6 for 14 against Wilson.
Mark Trumbo is hitting .359 with seven homers in 17 games against the Yankees, and Erick Aybar is 10 for 26 off Pettitte.
Entering his first contest against his former team, Vernon Wells is batting .095 over his last 12 games.
Mark Teixeira is hitting .118 with five RBIs in his last eight contests.
