KEY GAME INFORMATION
TORONTO: 2017: 76-86, fourth place.
MANAGER: John Gibbons (sixth season of second stint, 11th overall with Blue Jays).
ADDITIONS: LHP Jaime Garcia, OF Randal Grichuk, OF Curtis Granderson, RHP Seung-hwan Oh, INF Yangervis Solarte, INF Aledmys Diaz, RHP John Axford, RHP Tyler Clippard, INF Danny Espinosa, RHP Taylor Guerrieri, INF Gift Ngoepe, LHP Sam Moll, RHP Sam Gaviglio.
SUBTRACTIONS: OF Jose Bautista, OF Ezequiel Carrera, RHP Dominic Leone, LHP Brett Anderson, INF Darwin Barney, RHP Leonel Campos, OF Darrell Ceciliani, RHP Taylor Cole, INF Ryan Goins, C Raffy Lopez, RHP Tom Koehler, RHP Dominic Leone, C Miguel Montero, INF Rob Refsnyder, OF Michael Saunders, RHP Bo Schultz, RHP Cesar Valdez.
OUTLOOK: The powerful Yankees and reigning division champion Red Sox are considered playoff favorites in the AL East, so the expectation is the Blue Jays will be left to compete for the second wild card. If Donaldson and Smoak help the offense rebound from last season's injury-induced stumble, when Toronto scored an AL-low 693 runs, and the starting pitching stays strong and healthy, the Blue Jays might be able to mount a playoff push. Health concerns remain plentiful, however. Besides Tulowitzki's troublesome heel, Travis will need scheduled downtime to rest his surgically repaired right knee. Stroman was slowed by a sore shoulder in spring training, and Sanchez will be closely monitored after making just eight starts last year because of blister issues.
KANSAS CITY: 2017: 80-82, third place.
MANAGER: Ned Yost (ninth season).
ADDITIONS: RHP Jesse Hahn, CF Jon Jay, 1B Lucas Duda, RHP Wily Peralta, RHP Justin Grimm.
SUBTRACTIONS: 1B Eric Hosmer, CF Lorenzo Cain, LHP Jason Vargas, RHP Joakim Soria, LHP Mike Minor, OF Melky Cabrera, LHP Scott Alexander, DH Brandon Moss, RHP Mike Morin, LHP Ryan Buchter, RHP Trevor Cahill.
OUTLOOK: This was supposed to be a rebuilding year in Kansas City, when most of the Royals' top players hit free agency en masse. With Moustakas and Escobar finding little market, both returned to Kansas City with prove-it contracts. That gives the Royals a fighting chance to stay competitive into July, and then all bets are off. But the reality is there are still far too many holes, both in the lineup and on the pitching staff, for the Royals to be considered contenders. They would do well to match the 80 wins they had last season, and could be a big seller at the July 31 trade deadline, which would allow them to replenish a shallow farm system and begin their rebuilding job in earnest.
PREVIEW
Rookies battle for Blue Jays, Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two promising rookies -- Ryan Borucki of the Toronto Blue Jays and Heath Fillmyer of the Kansas City Royals -- square off Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game series.

Borucki began the season with Triple-A Buffalo, where he was 6-5 with a 3.27 ERA. He made his major league debut on June 26.

He has won his last two starts, besting American League playoff contenders Seattle and Boston. In his past three starts, he has allowed six earned runs and 19 hits over 19 innings. In his Aug. 3 victory over the Mariners, he yielded one unearned run on four hits over eight innings.

The 24-year-old left-hander, who was a 15th-round pick in 2012 out of Mundelein, Illinois High, is a groundball pitcher. Borucki has allowed one home run over 48 innings in his first eight starts over 48 innings. He has walked 14 and struck out 32. He went 0-1 with a 2.79 ERA in five July starts.

The Royals acquired Fillmyer in a Jan. 29 trade with the Oakland Athletics. He was 11-5 with a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts last season with Double-A Midland and began this season with Triple-A Omaha, going 4-5 with a 5.75 ERA in 13 starts.

Fillmyer will be making his 10th appearance and sixth start. He is coming off his best game, allowing three hits over seven scoreless innings against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday to claim his first major league victory.

Overall, Fillmyer is 1-1 with a 3.13 ERA, while holding opposing hitters to a .231 batting average.

Fillmyer is 1-1 with a 1.71 ERA in four Kauffman Stadium outings. Fillmyer will become the Royals' starter for the 28 consecutive game younger than 30.

Fillmyer has never faced the Blue Jays, while likewise, Ryan Borucki will be pitching against the Royals for the first time.

The Royals won the opener of the series 3-1 on Monday night with Brad Keller limiting the Blue Jays to one run on four hits over seven innings. It was only the Royals' second victory in 11 games.

The Royals have not committed an error in 13 consecutive games and 120 innings, both club records.

Royals left-hander Danny Duffy was placed on the 10-day disabled list Monday and he will miss his Thursday start against the Blue Jays. Duffy has a shoulder impingement. Duffy and manager Ned Yost are optimistic he will not miss more than one start and would return to the rotation on Aug. 23 at Tampa Bay.

Rookie right-hander Glenn Sparkman was recalled from Triple-A Omaha and will start in Duffy's place in the series finale. Sparkman threw 68 pitches over 4 1/3 innings for the Royals longest relief outing of the season on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals. He was optioned to Storm Chasers on Sunday, but was recalled before he could make an appearance.

The Blue Jays are 2-6 in their past eight games. They have lost three of four this season to Kansas City.

After scoring eight runs on a dozen hits in a Thursday triumph over the Red Sox, the Blue Jays have scored four runs and hit .161 in their past four games.
