Manager: Bud Black (first season)
Who's new? 1B Ian Desmond, IF Alexi Amarista, RHP Greg Holland, LHP Mike Dunn
Who's gone? Manager Walt Weiss, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Eddie Butler, LHP Boone Logan, C Nick Hundley, IF Daniel Descalso, OF Ryan Raburn
Projected lineup: CF Charlie Blackmon (.324, 29 HR, 82 RBI, 17 SB), 2B D.J. LeMahieu (.348, 11, 66, 11), 3B Nolan Arenado (.294, 41, 133), RF Carlos Gonzalez (.298, 25, 100), 1B Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53), LF David Dahl (.315, 7, 24) or Gerardo Parra (.253, 7, 39), SS Trevor Story (.272, 27, 72), C Tony Wolters (.259, 3, 30)
Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best. | | KANSAS CITY: 2016: 81-81, third place.
Manager: Ned Yost (eighth season).
He's Here: OF Jorge Soler, RHP Jason Hammel, RHP Nathan Karns, DH Brandon Moss, LHP Travis Wood.
He's Outta Here: RHP Wade Davis, DH Kendrys Morales, OF Jarrod Dyson, RHP Luke Hochevar, RHP Edinson Volquez.
Projected lineup: SS Alcides Escobar (.261, 7 HRs, 55 RBIs), LF Alex Gordon (.220, 17, 40), CF Lorenzo Cain (.287, 9, 56), 1B Eric Hosmer (.266, 25, 104), DH Brandon Moss (.255, 28, 67), RF Jorge Soler (.238, 12, 31 with Cubs; likely to start season on DL with strained oblique), 3B Mike Moustakas (.240, 7, 13), C Salvador Perez (.247, 22, 64), Raul Mondesi (.185, 2, 13).
Rotation: LH Danny Duffy (12-3, 3.51 ERA, 188 Ks), RH Ian Kennedy (11-11, 3.68, 184 Ks), RH Jason Hammel (11-11, 3.83 with Cubs), LH Jason Vargas (0-0, 2.25 in 3 starts after returning from Tommy John surgery), RH Nathan Karns (6-2, 5.15 with Mariners).
Key relievers: RH Kelvin Herrera (2-6, 2.75, 12 saves), RH Joakim Soria (5-8, 4.05), LH Matt Strahm (2-2, 1.23), LH Travis Wood (4-0, 2.95), LH Scott Alexander (0-0, 3.32), RH Chris Young (3-9, 6.19).
Hot Spot: Starting Rotation. Duffy showed signs of blossoming into an ace late last year, but is yet to put it all together for a full season. Hammel was signed after the tragic death of RHP Yordano Ventura in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. Vargas barely pitched last season after coming back from elbow surgery. Karns has intriguing potential, but might end up in the bullpen unless he lives up to it quickly.
Outlook: Royals GM Dayton Moore thinks his starting rotation is the best it has been during his tenure, even if just about every spot is tenuous. He also thinks Kansas City has more power at the plate this year thanks to Moustakas' return from a torn ACL and the signing of Moss. Paulo Orlando (.302, 5, 43, 14 SBs) will replace Soler in right field at the start of the season. But there are plenty of question marks up and down the lineup, not to mention on the pitching staff, and several things must break right for Kansas City to make noise in the AL Central and take a run at its third World Series appearance in four years. |
| | Rockies, Royals meet with eye on wild-card races
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Colorado Rockies and the Kansas City Royals, two teams hoping to reach the postseason, open a three-game series Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium. The Rockies own the top spot in the National League wild-card race by a half-game over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Royals, who sit 1 1/2 games back of the second American League wild-card spot, are among eight teams within five games of the league's final playoff position. Kansas City still has faint hopes of overtaking American League Central leader Cleveland after taking the final game of the series with the Indians 7-4 on Sunday. The Royals sit seven games back of the Indians. "Huge win," said Jason Hammel, the winning pitcher Sunday. "We needed that," Royals manager Ned Yost said. The Royals have not fared well this year against National League clubs, losing five of nine, including being swept in a four-game series by the cross-state rival St. Louis Cardinals. The Rockies have won eight of 14 games against American League opponents. While Colorado is clinging to the NL wild-card lead, it lost a chance to open some ground on Milwaukee, dropping two of three at Coors Field to the Brewers. Milwaukee is four games behind the Rockies in the wild-card race. Colorado committed a three errors Sunday in an 8-4 loss to the Brewers. "This was a great opportunity for us to jump ahead. It didn't happen," Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez said. "But the good thing is -- or, I don't know if it's a good thing -- at least teams like the D-backs got swept, too. We ended up winning one game out of three, not the way you want to play at home, but it is what it is. We're still in there." The Rockies know their only path to the postseason is a wild card. While they are in second place in the NL, they know catching the Los Angeles Dodgers is all but in an impossibility. While the Rockies had a seven-game cushion for a playoff berth on Aug. 9, that margin has dwindled. Colorado will start right-hander Jon Gray (5-2, 4.74 ERA) in the series opener at Kauffman Stadium. This will be his 13th start and his 10th since coming off the disabled list on June 30. He will start against Kansas City for the first time in his career. Gray is 2-1 with a 3.23 ERA in his past five starts, allowing 11 runs, walking six and striking out 28 in 30 2/3 innings. Gray beat the Braves on Wednesday in his latest start, allowing two runs and five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings. He is 1-2 with a 6.34 ERA in seven road starts this season. He is 4-11 with a 4.93 ERA in 26 career road starts. This will be Gray's first interleague start of the year. In five career starts against American League clubs, he is 3-0 with a 3.99 ERA. The Royals will counter with left-hander Danny Duffy (7-8, 3.82), who was their Opening Day starter. While Duffy has a 3.14 ERA at home, he is just 3-4 this season at Kauffman Stadium. Duffy is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in two career starts against the Rockies, allowing six earned runs in 12 innings. He last faced Colorado in 2014. |
