| | | DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - When Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit on opening day, maybe then the Tigers will be able to enjoy a much-needed sense of normalcy.
As an offseason of drama gave way to spring training injuries, it was easy to forget the Tigers still have one of the most talented rosters in baseball. Sure, there have been some early problems for new manager Brad Ausmus to address, Detroit still figures to be the favorite to win its fourth consecutive AL Central title.
''We have a new look this year,'' outfielder Torii Hunter said. ''Little bit more speed and we'll miss the big man, but we'll score some runs.''
The ''big man'' is Prince Fielder, whom the Tigers traded to Texas in a blockbuster deal that brought second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit. That move gave the Tigers more financial flexibility, although they weren't all that aggressive in pursuing free agents. Detroit did sign Joe Nathan to replace departed closer Joaquin Benoit.
The Tigers also traded right-hander Doug Fister to Washington.
Lately, the focus has been on right-hander Max Scherzer, who enters his final season before free agency after winning the Cy Young Award in 2013. Negotiations with the Tigers on a long-term deal have stalled.
''They respect where I'm at. I respect where they're at, and we'll revisit this after the season,'' Scherzer said. ''I still want to be in Detroit. I love this clubhouse and everything about it. There's been a history of this team signing free agents so hopefully I'll be a part of that history as well.''
But right now Scherzer's future is uncertain, and with Hunter and Victor Martinez in the final season of their contracts, it's hard to say what Detroit's 2015 roster will look like.
So the Tigers may never have a better chance to win a World Series with this group than right now.
| | KANSAS CITY: KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - James Shields thinks back to last year, thoughtfully piecing together what was missing from the Kansas City Royals as they made a late push for the postseason.
The pitching was strong. The offense was coming around. The defense was sublime.
He finally settled on experience.
''These guys that didn't realize or have never been to September, when you're fighting for a playoff spot, now you have that experience,'' Shields said. ''And I think that was one of the things we were lacking last season, the experience. You tend to put too much on your shoulders. And I think the second half we definitely relaxed and put all that aside and had fun and played the game the way we know how to play, and it showed.
''I think with the experience factor now,'' Shields concluded, ''we're ready to go.''
After finishing 86-76 a year ago, and contending into September for the first time in a decade, the Royals have their sets sight squarely on their first playoff appearance since 1985 this year.
Anything less would be a disappointment. Anything less would be a failure.
''Last year was a blast. When the end of the season came in Chicago, nobody wanted to leave,'' first baseman Eric Hosmer said. ''They knew how close we were. We were right there. And it left a good taste in everyone's mouth going into the offseason, knowing how good everyone can be.''
Indeed, the Royals return most of their key players from a year ago, signing left-hander Jason Vargas to replace their only significant loss, starting pitcher Ervin Santana. They also upgraded at their weakest spots, trading for Norichika Aoki to play right field and bat leadoff and signing Omar Infante to settle a second base position that has been a black hole for years.
All of which left the notoriously frugal franchise with a record-setting payroll.
Royals manager Ned Yost hopes all those moves will pay off for a rotation that was among the league's best last year, and an offense that was among the league's worst.
''It's going to be a lineup that has offensive sequence from one to nine. You're not going to have any dead spots,'' Yost said. ''You're not going to get something going and then bam, run into a wall and have to get going again. At least, I hope not. I don't think so.''
So with more experience and an upgraded lineup, Kansas City enters its season opener Sunday at Detroit with boundless enthusiasm. |
| | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PA SPORTSTICKER AL PREVIEW (DETROIT-KANSAS CITY) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Tigers-Royals Preview* =======================
By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor
Detroit (84-68) at Kansas City (83-68), 1:05 p.m. EDT
James Shields had his poorest outing of the season against the Detroit Tigers, while Max Scherzer's worst came versus the Kansas City Royals.
Neither of these staff aces, Shields in particular, can afford a repeat as the Tigers and Royals continue a crucial three-game series at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday.
The bulk of the pressure will be on Shields in the second game of the biggest series in the AL Central race after Kansas City (83-69) was crushed 10-1 in Friday's opener to fall 1 1/2 games behind first-place Detroit (85-68) in the division.
The Royals couldn't get anything working against 2011 AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander, who allowed one run and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings to help the Tigers improve to 12-5 in the rivalry this year.
"He certainly seemed like he was up for this game," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of Verlander. "It was there up there with one of the best games he's had all season."
Ian Kinsler hit a two-run homer and every batter in Detroit's starting lineup had a hit by the fourth inning.
"There's no carry-over," manager Ned Yost said. "They whipped us, they beat us, they spanked us, whatever you want to say. We'll show up again tomorrow and be ready to play."
Kansas City badly needs a quality outing from Shields after Jason Vargas was touched for five runs and nine hits over 3 1-3 innings in the loss.
The Royals, who haven't won a division crown since 1985, occupy the second wild-card spot, one-half game behind Oakland and hold the same advantage over Seattle.
"This is why we play the game," Shields told MLB's official website. "This is why we grew up playing the game is for moments like this."
Both Shields (14-7, 3.15 ERA) and Scherzer (16-5, 3.26) have had strong outings within this division rivalry this season to go with a glaringly bad one.
Scherzer, last season's AL Cy Young winner, opened 2014 with eight scoreless innings in a win over the Royals and was 8-2 before his second outing against them June 17. Coming off a shutout of the Chicago White Sox, Scherzer was torched for season highs in runs (10) and hits (10) over a season-low four-plus innings in an 11-4 loss that day.
It was only the second time he allowed 10 runs in a single outing and was one of just four starts this season in which he's failed to log six innings. Scherzer, however, bounced back against Kansas City with 6 2-3 strong innings in a 4-2 win Sept. 9.
The Tigers could use another performance like that with Scherzer squaring off against Shields, who has tossed at least seven innings in his last four starts, posting a 1.23 ERA and 2-0 record that includes a 3-0 victory at Detroit on Sept. 10.
Shields tossed two-hit ball over seven innings in that game after going 0-2 with a 5.49 ERA over his first three starts against the Tigers this season, including a May 2 loss in which he went 6 1-3 innings and, like Scherzer, surrendered season worsts in runs (8) and hits (12).
Scherzer is looking to win two straight decisions for the first time since late July. He is 1-1 with a 4.10 ERA over his last four starts after allowing four runs and seven hits over seven innings while failing to get a decision in Monday's 8-6 win at Minnesota.
Shields allowed 10 hits in his previous outing but only three runs, working seven innings while not factoring in the decision in a 4-3 win over the White Sox on Monday.
