KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results.
They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona.
With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series.
''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January.
The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks.
''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.''
First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.
KANSAS CITY: KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - James Shields thinks back to last year, thoughtfully piecing together what was missing from the Kansas City Royals as they made a late push for the postseason.
The pitching was strong. The offense was coming around. The defense was sublime.
He finally settled on experience.
''These guys that didn't realize or have never been to September, when you're fighting for a playoff spot, now you have that experience,'' Shields said. ''And I think that was one of the things we were lacking last season, the experience. You tend to put too much on your shoulders. And I think the second half we definitely relaxed and put all that aside and had fun and played the game the way we know how to play, and it showed.
''I think with the experience factor now,'' Shields concluded, ''we're ready to go.''
After finishing 86-76 a year ago, and contending into September for the first time in a decade, the Royals have their sets sight squarely on their first playoff appearance since 1985 this year.
Anything less would be a disappointment. Anything less would be a failure.
''Last year was a blast. When the end of the season came in Chicago, nobody wanted to leave,'' first baseman Eric Hosmer said. ''They knew how close we were. We were right there. And it left a good taste in everyone's mouth going into the offseason, knowing how good everyone can be.''
Indeed, the Royals return most of their key players from a year ago, signing left-hander Jason Vargas to replace their only significant loss, starting pitcher Ervin Santana. They also upgraded at their weakest spots, trading for Norichika Aoki to play right field and bat leadoff and signing Omar Infante to settle a second base position that has been a black hole for years.
All of which left the notoriously frugal franchise with a record-setting payroll.
Royals manager Ned Yost hopes all those moves will pay off for a rotation that was among the league's best last year, and an offense that was among the league's worst.
''It's going to be a lineup that has offensive sequence from one to nine. You're not going to have any dead spots,'' Yost said. ''You're not going to get something going and then bam, run into a wall and have to get going again. At least, I hope not. I don't think so.''
So with more experience and an upgraded lineup, Kansas City enters its season opener Sunday at Detroit with boundless enthusiasm.

*Dodgers-Royals Preview* ========================

Los Angeles (41-35) at Kansas City (39-35), 8:10 p.m. EDT

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Zack Greinke is returning to face his first big-league club with his third different team since leaving Kansas City.

He may not be who the Royals want to see since they are on a four-game slide that has dropped them out of first place.

The Dodgers begin a three-game series Monday night with Greinke on the mound in their first visit to Kansas City in nine seasons.

Greinke (9-3, 2.57 ERA) spent his first seven seasons with the Royals, winning the Cy Young Award with them in 2009. He was traded to Milwaukee before the 2010 season.

The right-hander returned to Kansas City for the first time June 12, 2012, with the Brewers. He gave up one run in seven innings and did not get a decision in a 2-1 loss.

Greinke was traded to the Los Angeles Angels on July 27 that year and made another start at Kauffman Stadium on Sept. 15, yielding one run in 8 1-3 innings as he failed to receive a decision in a 3-2 defeat.

Now he will make another trip back with the Dodgers, who were swept between June 14-16, 2005, in their lone previous trip to Kansas City. The Royals (39-36) lead the all-time series, 4-2.

"It's always fun when you play games like that, especially with Greinke, because he was here for a good part of his career and a lot of fans saw him in his Cy Young season," first baseman Eric Hosmer told the Royals' official website.

Greinke surrendered one run in six innings Tuesday to earn his first victory in four outings, 4-2 over Colorado.

He endured nothing but losing seasons during his time in Kansas City, but the Royals are contenders now despite totaling eight runs in this slide that has dropped them 2 1/2 games behind Detroit in the AL Central. The losing streak came on the heels of a 10-game winning run that put Ned Yost's club atop the division.

"We're playing fine, but just an offensive down turn a little bit," Yost said. "You go through the ups and downs. A four-game losing streak right when you had put together a nice 10-game winning streak, it's tough."

Los Angeles (42-35) has won seven straight road interleague games and 10 of its last 14 overall after taking two of three in San Diego over the weekend even though Yasiel Puig went 1 for 10.

Adrian Gonzalez has 45 RBIs to lead the Dodgers, with Puig and Hanley Ramirez are tied for second with 44 apiece. Manager Don Mattingly said he will split designated hitter duties in this series among that trio.

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie (4-6, 3.86) will finally face the only team he has never seen in his 11-year career. The active Dodgers batter he has faced the most is Gonzalez, who is 4 for 13 off him.

Guthrie can win his third straight outing after yielding one run in 6 2-3 innings Wednesday in a 2-1 road victory over the Tigers. The right-hander is 0-4 with a 3.71 ERA in his last five home starts.

He has never faced Matt Kemp, batting .410 with 10 RBIs over a 10-game hitting streak.
