KEY GAME INFORMATION
TORONTO: TORONTO (AP) - All winter long, the Blue Jays' primary concern was upgrading the starting pitching. The biggest story in Toronto this spring, though, is the one about the free agent arm that got away.
After months of inaction, the Blue Jays thought they'd landed right-hander Ervin Santana on a one-year deal in early March. But when injury concerns flared up in Atlanta, Santana signed a similar deal with the Braves instead.
''I think it's pretty obvious we were involved, it didn't work out. I'm trying to take the high road here,'' general manager Alex Anthopoulos said after Santana turned him down, saying he'd rather pitch in a spacious National League park than face AL East foes in Toronto's hitter-friendly dome.
Anthopoulos, who'd previously come ''extremely close'' to acquiring a starter through trade, must now start the season with almost the same staff he took north last year. Right-handed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, the 2012 NL Cy Young winner, will be the opening-day starter again, while left-hander Mark Buehrle gets the third slot.
But none of the other three leading contenders, right-handers Brandon Morrow and Drew Hutchison, and left-hander J.A. Happ, have ever pitched 200 innings, and all three are coming off injuries. Morrow was limited to 10 starts last year by a nerve problem in his forearm, Hutchison hasn't pitched in the majors since elbow surgery in 2012, and Happ missed most of 2013 after being hit in the head by a line drive. Happ dimmed his own chances with an awful spring.
Santana, who has topped the 200-inning mark five times, would have given the Blue Jays valuable depth. Without him, there's more chance they'll need starts from touted but untested youngsters like Kyle Drabek, Sean Nolin, and Marcus Stroman.
Still, a confident Dickey insisted Santana would have been more ''bonus'' than ''necessity'' to Toronto. ''I feel like we have what we need,'' he said.
KANSAS CITY: KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - James Shields thinks back to last year, thoughtfully piecing together what was missing from the Kansas City Royals as they made a late push for the postseason.
The pitching was strong. The offense was coming around. The defense was sublime.
He finally settled on experience.
''These guys that didn't realize or have never been to September, when you're fighting for a playoff spot, now you have that experience,'' Shields said. ''And I think that was one of the things we were lacking last season, the experience. You tend to put too much on your shoulders. And I think the second half we definitely relaxed and put all that aside and had fun and played the game the way we know how to play, and it showed.
''I think with the experience factor now,'' Shields concluded, ''we're ready to go.''
After finishing 86-76 a year ago, and contending into September for the first time in a decade, the Royals have their sets sight squarely on their first playoff appearance since 1985 this year.
Anything less would be a disappointment. Anything less would be a failure.
''Last year was a blast. When the end of the season came in Chicago, nobody wanted to leave,'' first baseman Eric Hosmer said. ''They knew how close we were. We were right there. And it left a good taste in everyone's mouth going into the offseason, knowing how good everyone can be.''
Indeed, the Royals return most of their key players from a year ago, signing left-hander Jason Vargas to replace their only significant loss, starting pitcher Ervin Santana. They also upgraded at their weakest spots, trading for Norichika Aoki to play right field and bat leadoff and signing Omar Infante to settle a second base position that has been a black hole for years.
All of which left the notoriously frugal franchise with a record-setting payroll.
Royals manager Ned Yost hopes all those moves will pay off for a rotation that was among the league's best last year, and an offense that was among the league's worst.
''It's going to be a lineup that has offensive sequence from one to nine. You're not going to have any dead spots,'' Yost said. ''You're not going to get something going and then bam, run into a wall and have to get going again. At least, I hope not. I don't think so.''
So with more experience and an upgraded lineup, Kansas City enters its season opener Sunday at Detroit with boundless enthusiasm.

*Blue Jays-Royals Preview* ==========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Toronto (12-14) at Kansas City (13-12), 8:10 p.m. EDT

Once riding a 4-0 record and the best ERA in baseball, Toronto's Mark Buehrle hopes to recapture the formula that led to his outstanding start after an ugly performance in his last outing.

The Blue Jays may need another gem from the veteran following an injury to their leading hitter.

With Melky Cabrera's status uncertain, Buehrle will try to prevent the Kansas City Royals from completing their first three-game sweep of the Blue Jays in almost 21 years Thursday night.

After posting a major league-best 0.64 ERA over his first four starts, Buehrle (4-1, 2.16 ERA) had an opportunity to become the first Toronto hurler to start a season with five straight victories.

But the left-hander allowed 12 hits and seven runs over 5 1-3 innings Friday in an 8-1 home loss to the Red Sox. He gave up more earned runs in Boston's four-run second inning than he had in his first four starts combined.

"I wasn't hitting my spots as good as I was in the past," he said. "And when I did, they got some base hits. But overall, too many strikes in the middle of the zone."

Buehrle, who has allowed one run over 22 2-3 innings in three road starts, looks to bounce back at Kansas City (14-12). However, he's 1-3 with a 6.16 ERA in his last five starts at Kauffman Stadium dating to his time with the Chicago White Sox.

Toronto (12-15) also could have a big hole in its lineup after Cabrera left Wednesday's 4-2 loss when he was hit in the left shin by a pitch in the sixth inning. X-rays taken came back negative and a team spokesman said he was day to day.

Cabrera, who hit a career-high 18 homers while playing for the Royals in 2011, leads the Blue Jays with a .342 average. Toronto was already missing Brett Lawrie, who is day to day with a sore back.

After totaling 20 runs in their previous three, the Blue Jays managed seven hits and went 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position en route to their sixth loss in seven games.

Kansas City's Eric Hosmer had two hits and two RBIs Wednesday, while Alcides Escobar's two-run double broke a 2-all tie in the seventh inning. The Royals won the opener 10-7 behind a six-run eighth.

Now they'll turn to Jeremy Guthrie (2-1, 4.22) as they try to win their fourth in a row and sweep the Blue Jays in a series of three or more games for the first time since July 1993.

Guthrie gave up two runs in the first inning Saturday and none over the next six in a 3-2, 10-inning loss at Baltimore. With runners on first and third and one out in the seventh, he coaxed the Orioles into a double-play to keep the game tied.

"He settled down unbelievably," manager Ned Yost said. "He did a great job of pitching out of a jam in the seventh."

The right-hander looks to continue his recent success versus Toronto after going 1-0 with a 1.44 ERA in his last four starts dating to his time with Baltimore.

Juan Francisco homered in two of his three at-bats when facing Guthrie in 2013, though Cabrera and Jose Bautista are a combined 7 for 34 with no homers since 2010.

Bautista, who has reached base in all 27 games, had 30 walks in April to match Fred McGriff's single-month club record.
