| |  | SEATTLE: HITTING: C/DH JESUS MONTERO was brought over from the Yankees to hit in the heart of the order. At age 22, his offensive potential is scary. OF ICHIRO SUZUKI is entering the twilight of his career, but he might still have another .300 season left. 2B DUSTIN ACKLEY is the kind of line-drive hitter who fits well in Safeco, but he needs to catch up to MLB pitching. 1B JUSTIN SMOAK has disappointed, but he's making strides and has 30-HR upside. OF CASPER WELLS could play everyday. He won't hit for average, but has the power Seattle needs. MIKE CARP figures to at least grab early at-bats against righties. He'll strike out, but has lots of power. OF FRANKLIN GUTIERREZ is out for at least a month with a pectoral injury, but will reclaim his starting gig based on his defense. Seattle would love to see OF MICHAEL SAUNDERS step up to replace Gutierrez, but he's shown no signs of being able to handle MLB pitching. C MIGUEL OLIVO still has solid power, but he's an all-or-nothing hitter. 3B CHONE FIGGINS isn't quite done, but he's close. He'll have to battle line-drive hitting KYLE SEAGER for a job. SS BRENDAN RYAN will stick around for defense, but his bat is barely good enough for a regular gig.
STARTING PITCHING: FELIX HERNANDEZ had a touch of bad luck last year, but he's one of the few pitchers in baseball who's a lock for 200 strikeouts. JASON VARGAS just keeps throwing strikes and letting his defense make plays. He'll get by fine again in spacious Safeco. BLAKE BEAVAN doesn't have a strikeout pitch, but he'll make few mistakes and get some outs thanks to a strong defense. HECTOR NOESI, who also came over from New York with Montero, isn't a big strikeout pitcher, but has good control and is savvy enough to get his shot in Seattle's rotation this year. 37-year-old journeyman KEVIN MILLWOOD will fill out the fifth spot in the rotation after a solid spring. Top prospect DANNY HULTZEN could break into the bigs in 2012. The lefty has the polish of a big leaguer right now, though his ceiling is more good-not-great.
RELIEF PITCHING: Like many rebuilding teams, the Mariners will continue to shop their closer. BRANDON LEAGUE will pick up saves in Seattle, but he's more of a groundball pitcher than a strikeout artist. He'd likely be ticketed for a set-up role elsewhere. If League is traded, the closer role is wide open. SHAWN KELLEY came back from Tommy John surgery late last year and looked as good as ever. If he picks up where he left off last year, he'd be an obvious choice for ninth inning duties. CHANCE RUFFIN, part of the Doug Fister trade, has a strong minor-league track record. He could carve out a big role in this bullpen if he can improve his command. | | KANSAS CITY: HITTING: With Melky Cabrera gone, OF LORENZO CAIN will get first crack at leadoff and centerfield. If he falters, speedster JASON BOURGEOIS, vet MITCH MAIER and prospect WIL MYERS are waiting. Former Brewer YUNIESKY BETANCOURT will start at 2B and has good life in his bat for a middle infielder. OF ALEX GORDON may not hit for average, but his approach and power are there. DH BILLY BUTLER is rock solid, but it's fair to wonder whether his power will ever progress. 1B ERIC HOSMER has MVP-type upside, and he's on the verge of figuring out MLB pitching. OF JEFF FRANCOEUR still chases too many bad pitches, but the organization likes him and he still has some pop and speed. 3B MIKE MOUSTAKAS is too good for the minors, but he still hasn't caught up to major-league pitching. There's a good chance he finds his groove this year. C HUMBERTO QUINTERO will be the main backstop with BRAYAN PENA backing him up. Speedy SS ALCIDES ESCOBAR's bat hasn't caught up to his glove.
STARTING PITCHING: K.C. once again hopes this is the year LUKE HOCHEVAR puts it all together. His velocity picked up late last year, allowing him to be more than a groundball guy. Lefty BRUCE CHEN's late-career renaissance continues. He'll be a reliable veteran arm in the middle of K.C.'s rotation again. FELIPE PAULINO has the biggest upside in this rotation. He's always had one of MLB's best fastballs. His problem was that, when he missed (which has been often), it was usually belt-high and over the middle of the plate. If he hits his spots as he did late last year, he's got potential. But Paulino will start the season on the DL with a sore elbow. The Royals hope to solve JONATHAN SANCHEZ's command issues. The lefty is a risk, but has legitimate No. 3 potential. Top prospect DANNY DUFFY will get every chance to pitch his way into the Opening Day rotation.
RELIEF PITCHING: JOAKIM SORIA is out for the season with Tommy John surgery, leaving GREG HOLLAND to pick up closer duties. Holland was the Royals' best bullpen arm in 2011 and his stuff has always been nearly unhittable. It's just a matter of whether last year's vastly improved walk rate was for real. JONATHAN BROXTON was a disaster last season, but he'll be given every chance to become the No. 2 guy in this bullpen because of his experience in Los Angeles. AARON CROW was a first-round pick (twice) for his college career as a starter, but wore down late last year, and walked too many batters. |

The Kansas City Royals have managed to stay in the wild-card conversation thanks in part to Danny Duffy, who has come up big since debuting last month.
The same can't be said for Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, who has struggled to find his form of late.
Duffy takes the mound opposite Hernandez as the Royals and Mariners meet for the first time Monday at Kauffman Stadium.
After undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, Duffy (2-0, 1.10 ERA) has impressed since getting called up for the first time Aug. 7. The 24-year-old left-hander has struck out 17 in 16 1-3 innings and limited opponents to a .203 average.
"They told me when I first had surgery it's going to take some time to get your feel back for everything, and that's exactly what happened," Duffy, who lasted 3 2-3 innings in his first start before winning his last two, told MLB's official website. "I'm lucky to have it come back as fast as it has."
Duffy carries a 12 2-3 scoreless innings streak into the opener of this four-game set after scattering five hits in 6 2-3 innings in Wednesday's 8-1 victory at Minnesota.
"Sometimes he gets too excited on the mound, so I just tell him to keep down a little bit," catcher Salvador Perez said of Duffy, who has never faced the Mariners. "I tell him to work both sides of the plate and that's what he did. That's why he was so good."
Duffy will look to deliver another strong showing for the Royals (70-66), who are 5 1/2 games out of the second wild-card spot.
"We're still pushing for it," said outfielder Jarrod Dyson, who has stolen a major league-leading 13 bases since Aug. 11. "We're not going to let up. We're going to give it all we've got."
Kansas City has won six of eight after concluding a 4-2 road trip with Sunday's 5-0 victory over Toronto. James Shields threw seven strong innings and Eric Hosmer went 2 for 5 with three RBIs.
"We've got some room to catch up," Shields said. "We're fighting right now. Today was a big game."
The Royals now try to keep things going against Hernandez (12-8, 2.97), who is hoping to avoid losing a career worst-tying fourth consecutive start. The former Cy Young Award winner's only such stretch came April 27-May 13, 2008.
Hernandez has posted a 9.64 ERA during his skid, giving up nine runs - a career-worst eight earned - in three-plus innings Wednesday in a 12-4 loss to Texas.
"It was embarrassing, terrible," said Hernandez, whose ERA has increased by more than one-half run in his last three starts. "I was a little bit up. That was the problem. And everything that I threw, they hit and found holes. That's a whole lot of runs."
Hernandez has gone 4-3 with a 2.67 ERA in 10 starts in the series, allowing three earned runs or fewer in each of those outings. The right-hander has limited Billy Butler and Alex Gordon to a combined eight hits in 38 at-bats (.211) in their matchups.
Butler, mired in an 0-for-15 slump, hit .464 with two homers and seven RBIs in eight games against the Mariners last year. Seattle, though, won seven of those contests.
The Mariners (62-74) took three straight from Houston to open an eight-game trek before falling 2-0 in Sunday's finale. Seattle was limited to four singles in dropping to 3-7 in its last 10 games.
