Rotation: RH Kevin Gausman (9-12, 3.61 ERA), RH Dylan Bundy (10-6, 4.02), LH Wade Miley (9-13, 5.37), RH Ubaldo Jimenez (8-12, 5.44), RH Mike Wright (3-4, 5.79) or Chris Lee (5-0, 2.98 at Double-A) or Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 6.38 with Mets) or Tyler Wilson (4-6, 5.27) or Jayson Aquino (0-0, 0.00 in three games)
Key relievers: LH Zach Britton (2-1, 0.54, 47/47 SV), RH Brad Brach (10-4, 2.05), RH Darren O'Day (3-1, 3.77), RH Mychal Givens (8-2, 3.13), LH Donnie Hart (0-0, 0.49), LH Vidal Nuno (1-1, 3.53 with Mariners)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and bullpen. A shoulder injury in camp left 16-game winner Chris Tillman in doubt for opening day. That opened the floodgates for a pair of competitions that are somewhat intertwined, since the Orioles value long relievers more than perhaps any team. Wright and Wilson, who shuttled between the bullpen and the rotation last season, are the top candidates for the final rotation job. Aquino is a candidate to start or relieve. Logan Verrett, Richard Bleier and Zach Stewart are all potential long men. Keep an eye on Lee, a 24-year-old lefty who missed most of last season with a lat strain.
Outlook: Boston landed the biggest trade chip of the winter and Baltimore couldn't (or didn't try to) acquire the number-one starter it badly needed. When the dust settled, the Orioles look like another 80-something win team that will lean on its organizational depth to overachieve. Machado is already one of the five best players in the game, and at 24 his prime years might still lie ahead. Only three teams in history have had three 40-home run hitters, but Machado, Davis and Trumbo are capable of making it four. Expect some high-scoring games: the Orioles' outfield earned low marks on defense last year, while their starting rotation is iffy at best. Bridging the gap to closer Britton will be key. | | HOUSTON: 2016: 84-78, third place
Manager: A.J. Hinch (third season)
Who's new? RF Josh Reddick, CF Carlos Beltran, LF Nori Aoki, C Brian McCann, RHP Charlie Morton
Who's gone? C Jason Castro, INF Luis Valbuena, OF Colby Rasmus, RHP Doug Fister
Projected lineup: CF George Springer (.261, 29 HR, 82 RBI), 2B Jose Altuve (.338, 24, 96, 30 SB), SS Carlos Correa (.274, 20, 96, 13 SB), DH Carlos Beltran (.295, 29, 93 with Yankees and Rangers), C Brian McCann (.242, 20, 58 with Yankees) or Evan Gattis (.251, 32, 72), 3B Alex Bregman (.264, 8, 34 in 49 games), RF Josh Reddick (.281, 10, 37 with A's and Dodgers), 1B Yulieski Gurriel (.262, 3, 15), LF Nori Aoki (.283, 4, 28 with Mariners)
Rotation: LH Dallas Keuchel (9-12, 4.55 ERA), RH Collin McHugh (13-10, 4.34), RH Mike Fiers (11-8, 4.48), RH Lance McCullers (6-5, 3.22), RH Charlie Morton (1-1, 4.15 in four games with Phillies)
Key relievers: RH Ken Giles (2-5, 4.11, 15/20 SV), RH Luke Gregerson (4-3, 3.28, 15/21 SV), RH Will Harris (1-2, 2.25, 12/15 SV), RH Chris Devenski (4-4, 2.16), LH Tony Sipp (1-2, 4.95), RH Michael Feliz (8-1, 4.43)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and catcher. Hamstring issues limited 33-year-old Morton to four starts with the Phillies last season. That didn't stop the Astros from signing him to a two-year contract worth at least $14 million. Now, veteran Fiers and 24-year-old Joe Musgrove are on the bubble for the fifth starter's job. McCann and Gattis give the Astros a pair of veteran catchers with slugging potential. McCann has fewer weaknesses behind the plate; Gattis is the better all-around hitter. With Beltran aboard as the primary designated hitter, McCann and Gattis won't both be in the lineup on most nights.
Outlook: After slipping to third place in the AL West last year, the Astros' front office decided to double down on dingers rather than upgrade a rotation that lacks a true ace. The result: A lineup with eight potential 20-home run hitters, including possible MVP candidates in Altuve and Correa. Everyone returns from an impressive young bullpen with high strikeout potential. If the Astros are in contention by the trade deadline, the front office should have the financial flexibility to add a front-line starter. Then again, if Dallas Keuchel looks like the pitcher who won a Cy Young Award in 2015, Houston might not have a problem. |
| | Astros turn to McCullers against Orioles' Asher in finale
HOUSTON -- The Astros will close their 10-game homestand with right-hander Lance McCullers on the mound opposite Baltimore Orioles right-hander Alex Asher in Sunday's series finale at Minute Maid Park. McCullers (5-1, 2.43 ERA) will carry a scoreless innings streak of 22 into his 11th start of the season, a span that includes him not having allowed an earned run over his last four starts for the Astros (34-16). McCullers is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his career against the Orioles with 21 strikeouts over 14 innings. He endured a wild performance against Baltimore on May 26, 2016, allowing just one run on one hit while also recording 10 strikeouts and issuing six walks while tossing 108 pitches over five innings in a 4-2 victory. Asher (1-2, 2.17 ERA) will make his third start of the season, his first since replacing veteran righty Ubaldo Jimenez in the rotation. Asher will not only make his first career appearance against the Astros, Sunday will mark his first outing against an American League West opponent. The Orioles (25-22) are in need of a breakthrough, whether from Asher or their offense. Baltimore dropped its sixth consecutive game on Saturday night and has scored more than three runs just once during that skid, a 14-7 setback against the Minnesota Twins on May 22. "It doesn't happen in one game," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of a collective rebound by the offense. "It doesn't always work that way. We have to have cooperation from the other club, and they're not going to. That's a really good team over there with good pitching and a lot of ways to beat you." With both members of their starting battery returning from the disabled list Saturday, the Astros could easily evaluate how left-hander Dallas Keuchel was feeling after being sidelined for 10 days with a pinched nerve in his neck. The evaluation of catcher Brian McCann had the potential to be a bit trickier, that was until McCann took a foul tip off his facemask in the seventh inning. McCann had been on the 7-day concussion DL after suffering a concussion in New York against the Yankees on May 14. McCann finished 0-for-2 with a pair of walks. "We always get nervous the first time back and as a catcher you're not going to be able to avoid foul tips or balls in the dirt that kick up," said Astros manager A.J. Hinch, a former catcher. "And I think all of us, including McCann, needed a test. Are you OK? How does it feel? "After not catching for those seven days just the speed of the game and the physicality of catching can take its toll on him. But he seemed to be OK. We checked with him and he finished the game." Said McCann after the Astros' 5-2 victory: "It felt great. The game slowed down probably after the third or fourth inning. So, it was good to get back out there and get another win." |
