| |  | ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's desert overhaul began last summer with the hire of Tony La Russa as chief baseball officer.
More hires followed: Dave Stewart as general manager, Joe Carter and De Jon Watson to front-office positions, Chip Hale as the new manager.
Now that the brain trust is in place, it's time to see what the new-look Diamondbacks can do on the field.
''I don't have a crystal ball. I just know we'll be competitive,'' La Russa said. ''I've said before, I'll be broken-hearted if we don't have a winning record this year.''
Arizona has fallen hard since winning the 2011 NL West crown, putting together a pair of .500 seasons before dropping to 64-98 a year ago, the worst record in baseball and second-worst in franchise history.
Some of it was injuries; the Diamondbacks lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery and seemed to have every one of their top players get hurt at some point.
But La Russa and the rest of the front office also saw need for changes, which began during the trade deadline and continued during the offseason.
Gone are catcher Miguel Montero, third baseman Martin Prado, shortstop Didi Gregorius, along with pitchers Wade Miley and Brandon McCarthy.
Even with the losses, Arizona's lineup should be potent.
A.J. Pollock, Mark Trumbo and Paul Goldschmidt are all healthy after missing games last season and David Peralta returns in right field after a solid rookie season. Arizona also picked up Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas, who has potentially game-changing power.
But, as has been the case in the desert, pitching will be the big question
Arizona traded Miley to Boston and its opening day starter will be Josh Collmenter, an over-the-top-throwing right-hander who has bounced between the bullpen and the rotation during his four big-league seasons.
Patrick Corbin and Bronson Arroyo were part of the rotation last season, but both underwent Tommy John surgery and aren't expected to return until at least midseason.
The Diamondbacks picked up right-hander Rubby De La Rosa in the Miley trade and right-hander Jeremy Hellickson in another deal with Tampa Bay. Arizona also signed 21-year-old Cuban right-hander Yoan Lopez, who is competing for a spot in the rotation, and has right-handers Chase Anderson and Trevor Cahill back from last season.
For all the potential the Diamondbacks have with their bats, it won't matter much if the pitchers don't come through.
A few more things to look for from the 2015 Arizona Diamondbacks:
GOLDY SHINES: Goldschmidt was having another stellar season in 2014 when he was derailed by a broken hand at the start of August. Before his injury, the All-Star first baseman had become one of the best power hitters in the game and was runner-up in the NL MVP race in 2013, when he hit .302 with 26 homers and 125 RBIs. He felt good throughout spring training and expected to be back giving the Diamondbacks some consistent pop in the lineup.
REPLACING MONTERO: Arizona took a gamble during the offseason by trading Montero to the Chicago Cubs. A two-time All-Star, Montero was a steadying influence in the clubhouse and behind the plate, not to mention a power bat in the lineup. Now that he's gone, the Diamondbacks will turn to 31-year-old Tuffy Gosewisch, who has 179 career at-bats and didn't break into the majors until 2013 after eight years in the minors.
ADDING TOMAS: The Diamondbacks made a bit of an international splash by signing Tomas to a six-year, $68 million contract. The dilemma now is to figure out where to play him and how quickly he can adjust to playing in the big leagues. Arizona would like to play the 24-year-old at third base, but could move him to the outfield if he can't make the transition to a position he's never played. Tomas has plenty of raw ability and is young, so the Diamondbacks have high hopes for him - wherever he ends up playing.
HUDSON'S RETURN: Daniel Hudson was a consistent performer on Arizona's staff before having Tommy John surgery each of the past two seasons. He returned last September, pitching in the bullpen. The right-hander is expected to start the season in the bullpen, but could find a place back in the rotation if he remains healthy. | | HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros moved out of the major league basement last season.
Now the question is whether Jose Altuve and his teammates are ready to contend this year or if they still need a couple of seasons to complete their rebuild and get back to the postseason.
Owner Jim Crane is confident the time is now.
''This is our year,'' he said, adding that their goal is to make the playoffs.
The Astros made a 19-game improvement in 2014 to win 70 games and snap a streak of three straight 100-loss seasons. They beefed up a bullpen that struggled last year and added more pop to a lineup that was fourth in the majors with 163 homers in 2014 in an attempt to take another step in 2015.
''These guys are all professional baseball players and they all want to win,'' general manager Jeff Luhnow said. ''We're not going to set any limitations on them. It's up to them at this point. We've done our work for the offseason.''
The Astros blew 25 saves last season, a statistic that troubled Crane more than any other number associated with his team. His first order of business this offseason was to bring in players to get that number down this year.
To that end, Houston added relievers Luke Gregerson and Pat Neshek. Gregerson appeared in 72 games for the Athletics last season and posted a 2.12 ERA and Neshek saw action in 71 games for St. Louis in 2014 with a 1.87 ERA.
A lineup that already had power aplenty with Chris Carter, whose 37 homers tied for second in the majors last season, and George Springer, who hit 20 in just 78 games, now has more sluggers with the addition of Evan Gattis and Colby Rasmus. Gattis has hit 43 homers combined in his first two major league seasons and Rasmus has hit at least 22 home runs in two of the last three years.
That power is what excites first-year manager A.J. Hinch most about his team.
''We have a chance to be a dangerous lineup,'' Hinch said with a smile.
Some things to know about the 2015 Astros:
EXPECTATIONS FOR ALTUVE: Altuve became the first Astros player to win a batting title by hitting .341 last season. He set a team record with 225 hits, was third in the majors with 47 doubles, had 59 RBIs and tied for second in the league with 56 stolen bases.
So what does Luhnow expect the 24-year-old second baseman to do for an encore?
''He's going to be a .300 career hitter, which are few and far between,'' Luhnow said. ''So there's going to be years like with most of these great hitters where they hit .340 and years that they hit .305. In my mind Altuve is an elite major league hitter and we're going to see it year in and year out.''
SPRINGER'S SECOND YEAR: Springer, the 11th overall pick in the 2011 draft, hit .231 with 20 homers and 51 RBIs in 78 games as a rookie. He injured his left quadriceps on July 20 and he didn't play again. The Astros are eager to see what the right fielder can do in a full season.
''He's got a ton of potential,'' Hinch said. ''He's a dynamic player. He can do a lot of different things in a lot of different ways. Everybody sort of sits up in their seats when he comes up to bat. I think there's a chance for him to have impact in all (areas) of the game, which is hard to come by.''
CAN ROTATION BE CONSISTENT?: Dallas Keuchel (12-9, 2.93 ERA) and Collin McHugh (11-9, 2.73) had breakout seasons in 2014, but can they perform at that level in a second year to lead the rotation? Keuchel posted ERAs of over 5.00 in both of his first two seasons before being chosen this year's opening day starter with his work last year, and McHugh had ERAs of 7.59 and 10.04 in his first two years before his success in 2014.
ANOTHER NEW SKIPPER: Counting interim managers, Hinch is the seventh manager the Astros have had since 2009. He was hired just after last season following the firing of Bo Porter, who was let go near the end of his second season.
This is the second time the 40-year-old Hinch has led a team after he managed Arizona from May 2009 until July 2010, when he was fired after 31-48 start. He was the vice president of professional scouting for San Diego from 2010 until August. |

Houston's Collin McHugh has the chance to match Dallas Keuchel for the AL lead in victories a day after his teammate got win No. 13.
While Keuchel is pitching like a Cy Young contender and has dominated the opposition at home, McHugh hasn't been particularly sharp lately and is struggling in Houston.
McHugh looks to bounce back from another shaky outing and win a fourth consecutive start in the AL West-leading Astros' series finale with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
After dropping Friday's opener in 10 innings, the Astros (59-46) rebounded with a 9-2 victory Saturday for their ninth win in 12 contests to move three games ahead of second-place Los Angeles.
Hank Conger broke open the game with a fourth-inning grand slam - his second homer of the game - and Carlos Correa also went deep twice. It was the major league-leading 44th multihomer game for the Astros, who also lead all of baseball with 147 home runs.
"It's not a secret we've got a great team," said Correa, who has hit four of his 12 homers in the last five games. "We've got one of the best teams in baseball and we're going to go out there and compete."
Keuchel's 25-inning home scoreless streak ended in the second inning when gave up two runs, two hits and walked three, but the Astros staff allowed no hits and one walk the rest of the way.
Keuchel moved a win ahead of McHugh (12-5, 4.43 ERA) and Seattle's Felix Hernandez by improving to 10-0 with a 1.26 ERA in Houston.
McHugh has also found success at Minute Maid Park with an 8-2 record, but he's racked up those wins despite a 5.22 ERA. The last pitcher to have at least eight home wins in a season with a plus-5.00 ERA was Jorge De La Rosa, who went 10-6 with a 5.21 ERA at home for Colorado in 2009.
McHugh has regularly had to work out of trouble in his last three starts - all at home - surrendering 25 hits over 18 innings. Against the Angels on Tuesday, the right-hander gave up seven hits with four walks and let in five runs in five innings but was bailed out by his offense in a 10-5 win. He has a 7.57 run-support average in his victories.
"Wins and losses is not irrelevant when it comes to pitchers, but team wins and losses are a lot more important," McHugh told MLB's official website.
McHugh, who was tagged for six runs over five innings in his only start against Arizona (50-52) in 2013, has a 7.00 ERA in losing all three career starts against NL teams in Houston.
The Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray (3-5, 2.70) has fared much better against the opposite league.
The 23-year-old left-hander continued his dominance of the NL on Monday, allowing two runs with a career high-tying eight strikeouts in seven innings of a 4-3, 10-inning win at Seattle. The only times he has lasted seven innings this season have come in his three interleague starts - all in AL parks - and he's gone 2-0 with a 0.83 ERA.
Ray made his big league debut in his only appearance against the Astros on May 6, 2014, allowing a run and five hits in 5 1-3 innings of an 11-4 win for Detroit.
Arizona manager Chip Hale said rookie right fielder Yasmany Tomas will be back in the lineup Sunday after being removed in Saturday's sixth inning for not running hard on a groundout.
