KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''

*Rangers-Astros Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Texas (52-80) at Houston (56-78), 8:10 p.m. EDT

With the AL's two worst records, the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers have little tangible left to play for this season.

The Astros, however, are one win shy of capturing the Silver Boot for the first time in eight years.

Houston looks to clinch the season series with a victory Friday night at Minute Maid Park.

The Astros (57-78) had lost four of five before taking a 4-2 victory in Thursday's opener, relying on Jason Castro's second career grand slam in the fifth inning. Castro also singled after entering the game in an 0-for-20 slump. He has hit .361 with nine RBIs in his last nine home games against the Rangers (52-81).

"He's been working extremely hard," manager Bo Porter said of Castro. "And for him to be the guy that came up with that big hit there it's obviously good for the team and obviously good for his confidence."

Houston leads the Lone Star Series 9-4, and a win Friday would clinch the series for the first time since taking four of six as interleague opponents in 2006. A three-game set in Texas from Sept. 22-24 marks their only remaining series after Sunday.

Texas won 43 of 55 meetings from 2007-13.

"We won quite a few times," shortstop Elvis Andrus told MLB's official website. "If they win it, they deserve it."

Astros starter Brett Oberholtzer (4-9, 4.01 ERA) seeks his first win in five starts after giving up three runs and 10 hits over 6 2-3 innings in a 3-1 defeat at Cleveland on Sunday. Two of those runs came with two outs.

"I gave up a good fair share of hits, but I was disappointed in myself in not closing innings out.," he said.

Oberholtzer has endured some tough luck against Texas - going 0-2 despite a 2.25 ERA in four games, including three starts. However, he's 3-1 with a 2.28 ERA in his last seven starts at Minute Maid Park, including a 4-3 victory over the Rangers on Aug. 8 when he limited them to two runs over seven innings.

Adrian Beltre is 4 for 7 against him, 19 for 45 over his last 12 games and has hit .409 with 21 RBIs and 19 extra-base hits in his last 24 matchups with Houston.

Scott Baker (2-3, 5.45 ERA) had gone 0-3 with a 6.97 ERA through his first four starts before yielding only Billy Butler's homer over five innings of a 3-1 victory against Kansas City on Sunday. It marked his first win as a starter since July 23, 2011, with Minnesota, and his first following Tommy John surgery in 2012.

"It's still special because of the road that I've had to endure as far as injuries," Baker said.

Baker has given up four runs to Houston in 5 1-3 innings over three relief appearances this year.

Alex Rios missed a second straight game Thursday due to a bruised right thumb but is expected to return Friday. He's just 7 for 44 over his last 13 contests but has hit safely in six straight meetings with the Astros.

Houston's Robbie Grossman also sat out the opener after twisting his ankle in Wednesday's loss to Oakland, and manager Bo Porter told MLB's official website he's day to day. Grossman is 11 for 24 with three homers and seven RBIs in his last seven contests against Texas.
