KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''

*Rangers-Astros Preview* ========================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Texas (52-80) at Houston (56-78), 8:10 p.m. EDT

Though the Texas Rangers own the worst record in the majors, they've managed to play well of late.

Trying for a fourth win in five games, the visiting Rangers look to halt Collin McHugh's August success with the Houston Astros on Thursday night.

After Texas (52-80) avoided being swept by AL Central-leading Kansas City with a 3-1 victory Sunday, it took two of three from wild-card contending Seattle this week. Twenty-year-old Rougned Odor became the youngest player to hit a grand slam since Jose Reyes in 2003, and Leonys Martin hit a two-run shot in a 12-4 rout Wednesday.

Texas managed four hits in Tuesday's 5-0 loss to the Mariners and totaled 11 runs in its previous five contests.

"You never know what happens in this game," manager Ron Washington told MLB's official website. "I wish it was that easy to predict, but you have to play."

Martin is batting .440 in his last 14 games, but he's 3 for 22 with seven strikeouts in six at Houston this season.

Texas snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Astros (56-78) with a 6-2 victory at Minute Maid Park on Aug. 10.

The Rangers will get their first look at McHugh (6-9, 3.02 ERA), who is 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA in five starts this month. The right-hander allowed a run in each of those first four outings and gave up two in 5 1-3 innings of a 3-2 loss at Cleveland on Saturday.

"Ideally, you'd like to have a better mix of pitches and I didn't really have my curveball," McHugh said. "You battle with what you got."

Texas counters with Nick Tepesch (4-8, 4.45), who is 2-0 with a 3.31 ERA and has struck out 25 over 16 1-3 innings in three starts against the Astros. He allowed a run, two hits and fanned eight in 5 1-3 innings of a 5-4 defeat at Houston on May 14.

The right-hander allowed four runs in 19 2-3 innings while going 1-0 in his first three starts this month, then gave up six over 6 1-3 of a 6-3 loss to Kansas City on Saturday.

Chris Carter is 1 for 7 with four strikeouts against Tepesch, but he's homered in three straight games for the first time in his career while going 4 for 13 with six RBIs. He hit his 33rd home run Wednesday as the Astros lost for the fifth time in seven games, 5-4 to Oakland.

Texas' Alex Rios sat out Wednesday to rest a sore thumb. The banged-up veteran outfielder is batting .155 with no homers and nine RBIs in 20 games this month, but the Rangers have no immediate plans to shut him down as they did with Yu Darvish and Shin-Soo Choo, who are dealing with elbow issues.

"That would be ideal to make it better," Rios said. "But even with this I can do a little bit. I like being on the field, and playing in pain is something you have to do. I like being on the field and challenging myself."
