KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''

*Rangers-Astros Preview* ========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Texas (45-70) at Houston (48-68), 2:10 p.m. EDT

The Houston Astros are helping themselves avoid another last-place finish with their dominance over their scuffling rivals, the Texas Rangers.

Houston will try to conclude its three-game home series with an eighth consecutive win over the Rangers, and the Astros are hoping major league hits leader Jose Altuve can return from a sore neck Sunday.

Houston (49-68) moved 3 1/2 games ahead of last-place Texas (45-71) in the AL West with an 8-3 victory Saturday. Jon Singleton drove in three runs for an Astros team that was also playing without slugging rookie George Springer, who has 20 homers in 78 games.

After re-aggravating his injured quad during a rehab assignment, Springer's timetable for returning is unknown. Manager Bo Porter was more optimistic for Altuve, who left after five innings in Friday's 4-3 win over Texas.

"Obviously, he's a little sore from the discomfort, but he's actually better than he was (Friday), so we're going to give him the day and hopefully by (Sunday) it's behind him," Porter told MLB's official website.

Should he return, Altuve, who has 158 hits and is batting .333, will try to add to Nick Martinez's woes. The Texas right-hander is 0-7 with a 7.48 ERA in his last 10 starts and has allowed a combined 11 runs in his last two.

Martinez (1-8, 5.31 ERA) gave up five runs in five innings Monday in a 5-3 road loss to the Chicago White Sox.

"He's got stuff, man," manager Ron Washington said. "He's just got to learn how to use it. He's got to learn how to minimize damage. When he learns how to take that deep breath, buckle down and minimize damage, he's going to move forward."

Martinez will make his first start against Houston, winners in a season-best five straight at home. The Astros' last six-game home win streak was from April 22-May 5, 2012.

Dallas Keuchel (10-7, 2.89) could help them match that streak if he can continue his string of stellar outings.

He has yielded two earned runs in his last three starts, spanning 23 innings. Keuchel registered his AL-best fourth complete game in an 8-1 win over Oakland on July 30 but didn't get enough support for another victory Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Keuchel gave up one run over seven innings in a 2-1 loss in 15.

"We just couldn't get the offense going. Keuchel was really on his game," Porter said.

Keuchel is 3-2 with a 1.15 ERA in his last five starts at Minute Maid Park and has two complete games. He's 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA in two matchups with Texas this season and recorded his only career shutout May 13 against the Rangers, losers in 36 of 46 and 22 of 27 on the road.

The left-hander scattered seven hits, walked none and fanned seven in an 8-0 home victory.

Alex Rios, 5 for 15 with two doubles in his career against Keuchel, is expected to return to the lineup Sunday. Rios, batting .293 and second on the team with 45 RBIs, missed two games with a sprained right ankle.

"He's playing tomorrow. No questions about it," Washington told MLB's official website.
