PREVIEW
Norris gets first start as Tigers host White Sox

The managers of the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers will be back in the dugout on Saturday afternoon.

That wasn't the case in the latter innings of Chicago's 7-3 victory at Detroit's Comerica Park on Friday night. White Sox manager Rick Renteria was serving a one-game league suspension, while Detroit's Ron Gardenhire was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

Gardenhire felt his starting pitcher, Jordan Zimmermann, was getting squeezed by home plate umpire Todd Tichenor. Zimmermann walked Yoan Moncada with the bases loaded on a close 3-1 pitch.

Gardenhire's ejection was the 76th of his career and fourth since becoming Tigers manager prior to last season.

"I've been around Gardy for a long time. He's been thrown out of a lot of games," bench coach Steve Liddle said. "I'd say about 90 percent of the time it's because he's protecting the players and another 10 percent might be for various other reasons. He wanted his pitcher to stay in the game and that's what he did tonight."

The teams have split the first two games of the four-game series.

Tigers left-hander Daniel Norris (0-0, 4.32 ERA) will be making his first start this season. Gardenhire wanted to keep him in a long relief role but injuries have altered that plan.

Norris is replacing Matt Moore, who is out for the season after undergoing knee surgery on Wednesday. Norris was originally scheduled to pitch the series opener on Thursday but had his start pushed back two days.

In his last outing on Sunday, Norris gave up one run on six hits in three innings at Minnesota.

"I'm just happy to pitch, anytime, anywhere," Norris told the Detroit News. "I feel like I haven't been throwing well, to be honest. But the way I felt at the end of spring training showed me I still have it. It's going to come back."

The 25-year-old Norris made eight starts during an injury-marred 2018 campaign. He'll be seeking his first win since Sept. 28, 2017. He's 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in five career outings, including three starts, against the White Sox.

Ervin Santana (0-1, 10.38 ERA) will be making his third start for Chicago. He gave up three runs on six hits in five innings against Kansas City on Monday. The 36-year-old right-hander surrendered seven runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in his White Sox debut against Tampa Bay on April 9.

He missed most of last season due to an injury to his right middle finger.

He's 10-6 with a 3.89 ERA in 24 career starts against Detroit.

The White Sox will have their most important defender as well as their manager back in uniform. Shortstop Tim Anderson also served a one-game suspension on Friday. Both were punished for their conduct during a benches-clearing incident against Kansas City on Wednesday.

"I would rather just take this one day and use it as an off-day," Anderson told MLB.com. "Just keep going. Be ready for tomorrow."

Bench coach Joe McEwing filled in for Renteria.

"They made their decision. We'll abide by it and put it behind us and get ready to go tomorrow," Renteria said. "They've looked over everything. I'm not going to make it a public debate about what I agree or don't agree with. They did what they did."
