KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is gone, the final remaining link to the New York Yankees' last dynasty. He left behind a team in transition, that failed to make the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time in a generation and is beset with an older core coming off injuries.
Alex Rodriguez's return from a season-long drug suspension is the most interesting aspect of the Yankees, who enter the season with a health-challenged rotation, rebuilt bullpen and lineup that was among the least potent in the American League last year.
''I think we've added a lot of good young arms,'' manager Joe Girardi said. ''Added some good young players, as well. I think we've really seen an improvement in our young minor league players and the impact they are capable of having. I think we will continue to see that for years to come.''
If the Yankees founder, young players could be given more of a chance. Top prospects include pitcher Luis Severino, infielders Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder, and outfielder Aaron Judge.
But first, many of the old, beaten-up players will be given a chance to show they have something left.
Left fielder Brett Gardner (abdomen) and right fielder Carlos Beltran (elbow) return from surgery, and Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) missed a significant stretch of spring training. First baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist) hit .216 last year, 143rd among 148 major league qualifiers in his return from an injury that sidelined him for most of 2013.
After signing a big-money deal with the Yankees, catcher Brian McCann was hitting just .209 in May before improving in the second half to finish at .232. Third baseman Chase Headley, acquired from San Diego in July, was given a new contract by the Yankees because they have no confidence in A-Rod's ability to play the field. New York also re-signed Stephen Drew under the theory he can't be as bad as he was in 2014.
Didi Gregorius, obtained from Arizona in a trade, is the primary offensive newcomer and replaces Jeter at shortstop. Left-handed-hitting Garrett Jones hopes to earn at-bats.
''Jeter is still Jeter. Everything that everybody is going to talk about is Jeter,'' Gregorius said. ''But for me - I'm learning and I'm there just to play the game, so just trying to focus on the game and trying to win every game, that's all I can say, not worrying about what's going on around.''
LIGHTNING ROD: The three-time AL MVP, who turns 40 on July 27, has not played a full season since 2007 because the suspension, operations on both hips and other injuries. New York owes him $61 million over the final three seasons of his contract, so he will be given a chance to earn at-bats as a DH, especially against left-handed starters.
RICKETY ROTATION: Masahiro Tanaka missed 2 1/2 months in his first season because of a small elbow ligament tear the Yankees say didn't need surgery. CC Sabathia, limited to eight starts last year, has to show he can pitch effectively with reduced velocity. Michael Pineda, back from shoulder surgery, had a 1.89 ERA in 13 starts last year but missed a long stretch because of the shoulder. New York hopes hard-throwing Nathan Eovaldi can learn to be effective after his acquisition from Miami. With Chris Capuano on the DL and Ivan Nova not expected back from Tommy John surgery until May or June, Adam Warren was the leading contender for fifth starter.
BULLPEN: A strong point last year, the Yankees rebuilt the `pen. David Robertson was allowed to leave for the Chicago White Sox, and David Phelps, Shawn Kelley and Shane Greene were traded. Lefty Andrew Miller and Scott Baker were signed, and Justin Wilson and Chris Martin acquired in trades. Miller and Dellin Betances competed in spring training to replace Robertson as closer.
HOPS: The Yankees are sharing their ballpark with Major League Soccer's expansion New York City team, and Teixeira complained before the soccer team's home opener that the infield would get torn up, leading to bad hops.
DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers had barely finished celebrating a fourth straight division title last year when they were dispatched from the playoffs by Baltimore in a Division Series sweep. Then Kansas City - the team the Tigers fought so hard to hold off in the AL Central - rolled to the AL pennant and came within a game of winning the World Series.
It was enough to turn the Tigers into October afterthoughts for the first time in a while, and now it's fair to wonder whether Detroit's best chance to claim baseball's ultimate prize with its current core of stars has already come and gone.
''I'm not worried about what people are saying about us. I'm more worried about how we perform,'' manager Brad Ausmus said. ''I feel like this team is a winning team. This is a team that has an opportunity to win a World Series.''
The Tigers edged Kansas City by one game in the division last year in Ausmus' first season as manager, and their 90-72 record was similar enough to their previous work during this run of postseason appearances, but a three-game sweep at the hands of the Orioles snapped Detroit's streak of three straight trips to the AL Championship Series.
Then the Tigers lost Max Scherzer in the offseason, and it remains to be seen how much longer Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander and Victor Martinez can keep this team's run of success going.
Cabrera and Martinez each missed a chunk of the exhibition schedule after offseason surgery. Verlander is coming off a down year and has been displaced as Detroit's opening-day starter by left-hander David Price.
Over the past three seasons, the Tigers have fought off challenges in the division from the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland and Kansas City - but those teams essentially made their bids for first place one at a time. Now all three appear poised to threaten Detroit's reign.
''I think quietly, I've said for the last two or three years, I've said we have the best division in baseball. Nobody really talked about it because there weren't sexy names besides the Tigers, who had won however many straight and been to a couple World Series and had a lot of star power,'' Verlander said. ''The Royals won the pennant last year so, obviously, what I was saying wasn't just hogwash. We see all the teams in the AL quite enough, and I know that these teams are good enough to make our division one of the best in baseball.''
Here are a few things to watch as the Tigers try to make it five division championships in a row:
ON THE MEND: Cabrera had offseason surgery on his right foot and Martinez had an operation to repair his left knee. Their health is crucial, but the Tigers also are hoping for big contributions from shortstop Jose Iglesias and reliever Bruce Rondon, both of whom missed all of 2014 with injuries.
NEW-LOOK ROTATION: Scherzer isn't the only player gone from last year's starting staff. Rick Porcello was traded in a deal that brought Yoenis Cespedes to Detroit, so the Tigers had two openings in their rotation. They filled them by acquiring Shane Greene from the New York Yankees and Alfredo Simon from Cincinnati.
BULLPEN BLUES: Closer Joe Nathan is back after a rocky first season in Detroit. If the Tigers run out of patience with Nathan, Joakim Soria also returns. He was acquired shortly before the trade deadline last year, but his impact was limited, in part because of injury.
EXTRA POWER: J.D. Martinez provided a surprisingly productive bat last year after joining the Tigers, and the trade for Cespedes also gave Detroit some additional pop to supplement Cabrera and Victor Martinez.
NEW ACE?: Price is slated to start on opening day, a sign of just how much the Tigers are leaning on him after Scherzer's departure. He was acquired at the trade deadline last year, and Detroit is hoping the trio of Price, Verlander and Anibal Sanchez will make for a pretty impressive anchor to the pitching staff.

*Yankees-Tigers Preview* ========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

New York (5-6) at Detroit (9-2), 7:08 p.m. EDT

Last season, Alfredo Simon got off to a dazzling start that led to a break-out season as a starter. The Detroit Tigers traded for him with hopes of getting the same and filling a void in the rotation.

His April success has carried into a new season, and the right-hander will try to keep the Tigers rolling in his home debut Monday night as they open a four-game series with the New York Yankees.

Simon (2-0, 2.03 ERA) is 6-1 with a 1.72 ERA and .187 opponent batting average in seven April starts since the start of last season with Cincinnati.

According to manager Brad Ausmus, the transition has been as smooth as could be into a Detroit rotation that's 8-2 with a 2.48 ERA as it adjusts to the departures of Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello while Justin Verlander remains sidelined.

"He looks like he's taking a walk in the park when he's pitching," Ausmus told MLB's official website. "It's like he's playing catch with his son in the backyard."

It's tough to argue with that after Simon allowed two hits in eight innings of Wednesday's 1-0 win in Pittsburgh. He only struck out two but walked none in what was likely the best start of his career.

In four career starts against the Yankees, Simon is 0-3 with a 5.57 ERA. Mark Teixeira is 6 for 14 with a home run, and Jacoby Ellsbury is 4 for 9 and is batting .406 with three homers during an eight-game hitting streak against Detroit.

The Tigers (10-2) beat the Chicago White Sox 9-1 on Sunday to secure their fourth straight series win to begin the season. The lineup has also been impressive with a .305 average, which was led most recently by Yoenis Cespedes' two-homer game against the White Sox. Cespedes hit a grand slam in the first inning and followed it up with a two-run shot in the third.

Victor Martinez was 3 for 3 and has a 10-game hitting streak against the Yankees, and Miguel Cabrera and Jose Iglesias both doubled and are batting .426 and .436 respectively. Iglesias is batting .426 in his last 13 games against New York.

That figures to make things difficult on CC Sabathia's bid to turn his April results around. If he doesn't beat the Tigers, the left-hander who missed most of last season due to knee surgery will have gone over a year without a victory.

Sabathia (0-2, 5.68) surrendered four runs and seven hits in seven innings of Tuesday's 4-3 loss in Baltimore. He has, however, issued just one walk with 15 strikeouts in 12 2-3 innings, and his manager is encouraged.

"I'm just seeing better movement on his fastball," Joe Girardi said. "I'm seeing consistency in his changeup, it's not cutting. His slider is better. I just think he's locating a lot better and I think it's because he's healthy. It's hard when you're dealing with nagging injuries to go out there and perform at a high level."

He's won his last four starts against the Tigers with a 2.51 ERA and the last three have come at Comerica Park. Cespedes is 0 for 8 against Sabathia and Ian Kinsler is 4 for 23.

New York (6-6) got off to a rough start but recovered with a three-game sweep in Tampa Bay over the weekend. Sunday's 5-3 win featured a three-hit day from Garrett Jones as the first-year Yankee started in right field for Carlos Beltran, who has been out of the lineup for two games because of a cold.

The Yankees won four of seven in last season's series as the Tigers hit .198.
