KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - A decade removed from their most recent championship, the Chicago White Sox once again are eyeing a big season.
Their sights are set on an AL Central title after consecutive losing records, maybe even more. The White Sox added to their offense, boosted their rotation, overhauled their bullpen and sent expectations soaring.
''Obviously postseason first, and World Series,'' new closer David Robertson said. ''I mean that's what I look forward to every year. That's where I want to be.''
The addition of Robertson to the bullpen is among the reasons the White Sox believe they are armed and ready after going 73-89. But it's not the only one.
They added All-Star Jeff Samardzija to a rotation that already included ace Chris Sale. They added free agent Adam LaRoche to their lineup, giving AL Rookie of the Year Jose Abreu more protection, and brought in Melky Cabrera to solidify the No. 2 spot in the order behind Adam Eaton.
Is that enough to compete with Cleveland, Kansas City and Detroit in the division and make a run in the playoffs? The White Sox believe it is. Their fans are pumped, too.
With that in mind, here are some things to look for this season:
LINED UP: It would be hard for Abreu to match, let alone exceed, what he did last season. He batted .317 with 36 homers and 107 RBIs, one year after defecting from Cuba. While the White Sox tied for fourth in the AL in homers, they were just eighth in runs, ninth in batting average and 12th in on-base percentage.
LaRoche, who signed a $25 million, two-year contract, should give them power from the left side. He hit 26 homers and drove in 92 runs for Washington last season. Cabrera, a .301 hitter with Toronto, helps the top of the order.
''I think we're jelling together as a team. Hopefully that translates to wins in April,'' Eaton said.
SALE-ING ALONG: With Sale, Samardzija and Jose Quintana, the White Sox appear strong at the top of the rotation.
Sale made the AL All-Star team for the third time last season while going 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA with 208 strikeouts and 39 walks. Samardzija, acquired from Oakland, moves into the No. 2 spot. With Sale recovering from a broken foot, Samardzija - who grew up a White Sox fan - could wind up starting the opener at Kansas City after pitching the previous two for the Cubs.
CLOSING TIME: Chicago tied for seventh in the majors with 21 blown saves and had the fourth-lowest save percentage (63.2) last season. Robertson, who took over as closer after Mariano Rivera retired, saved 39 games for the New York Yankees last season. Chicago also brought in Zach Duke.
RODON WATCH: Whether he starts the season in the rotation or gets sent down to the minors, expect to see top prospect Carlos Rodon in a White Sox uniform at some point this season. The No. 3 pick in last year's amateur draft, he is on a fast track to the majors after three standout seasons at North Carolina State. Rodon, who made nine minor league appearances in 2014, could start the year in the rotation. If Rodon starts in the minors, veteran Brad Penny could make some early starts.
DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers had barely finished celebrating a fourth straight division title last year when they were dispatched from the playoffs by Baltimore in a Division Series sweep. Then Kansas City - the team the Tigers fought so hard to hold off in the AL Central - rolled to the AL pennant and came within a game of winning the World Series.
It was enough to turn the Tigers into October afterthoughts for the first time in a while, and now it's fair to wonder whether Detroit's best chance to claim baseball's ultimate prize with its current core of stars has already come and gone.
''I'm not worried about what people are saying about us. I'm more worried about how we perform,'' manager Brad Ausmus said. ''I feel like this team is a winning team. This is a team that has an opportunity to win a World Series.''
The Tigers edged Kansas City by one game in the division last year in Ausmus' first season as manager, and their 90-72 record was similar enough to their previous work during this run of postseason appearances, but a three-game sweep at the hands of the Orioles snapped Detroit's streak of three straight trips to the AL Championship Series.
Then the Tigers lost Max Scherzer in the offseason, and it remains to be seen how much longer Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander and Victor Martinez can keep this team's run of success going.
Cabrera and Martinez each missed a chunk of the exhibition schedule after offseason surgery. Verlander is coming off a down year and has been displaced as Detroit's opening-day starter by left-hander David Price.
Over the past three seasons, the Tigers have fought off challenges in the division from the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland and Kansas City - but those teams essentially made their bids for first place one at a time. Now all three appear poised to threaten Detroit's reign.
''I think quietly, I've said for the last two or three years, I've said we have the best division in baseball. Nobody really talked about it because there weren't sexy names besides the Tigers, who had won however many straight and been to a couple World Series and had a lot of star power,'' Verlander said. ''The Royals won the pennant last year so, obviously, what I was saying wasn't just hogwash. We see all the teams in the AL quite enough, and I know that these teams are good enough to make our division one of the best in baseball.''
Here are a few things to watch as the Tigers try to make it five division championships in a row:
ON THE MEND: Cabrera had offseason surgery on his right foot and Martinez had an operation to repair his left knee. Their health is crucial, but the Tigers also are hoping for big contributions from shortstop Jose Iglesias and reliever Bruce Rondon, both of whom missed all of 2014 with injuries.
NEW-LOOK ROTATION: Scherzer isn't the only player gone from last year's starting staff. Rick Porcello was traded in a deal that brought Yoenis Cespedes to Detroit, so the Tigers had two openings in their rotation. They filled them by acquiring Shane Greene from the New York Yankees and Alfredo Simon from Cincinnati.
BULLPEN BLUES: Closer Joe Nathan is back after a rocky first season in Detroit. If the Tigers run out of patience with Nathan, Joakim Soria also returns. He was acquired shortly before the trade deadline last year, but his impact was limited, in part because of injury.
EXTRA POWER: J.D. Martinez provided a surprisingly productive bat last year after joining the Tigers, and the trade for Cespedes also gave Detroit some additional pop to supplement Cabrera and Victor Martinez.
NEW ACE?: Price is slated to start on opening day, a sign of just how much the Tigers are leaning on him after Scherzer's departure. He was acquired at the trade deadline last year, and Detroit is hoping the trio of Price, Verlander and Anibal Sanchez will make for a pretty impressive anchor to the pitching staff.

*White Sox-Tigers Preview* ==========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

Chicago (3-6) at Detroit (9-1), 1:08 p.m. EDT

Shane Greene came up with the New York Yankees in July of last season and shut down the Detroit Tigers while winning both starts against them.

Tigers' general manager Dave Dombrowski found a way to bring him to the Motor City in the offseason, and Greene hasn't disappointed.

The right-hander seeks a third straight solid outing as Detroit hosts the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

Dombrowski acquired Greene in a three-team trade with the Yankees and Arizona in December, projecting the 26-year-old would slide into a rotation that eventually would be thinned by the trade of Rick Porcello and departure of Max Scherzer in free agency.

Greene (2-0, 0.00 ERA) has been dominant in his first two starts with the Tigers (9-2), giving up an unearned run in eight innings of a 7-1 win over Minnesota on April 9 before going the same distance and scattering three hits in a 2-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

No Tigers pitcher has ever went three starts without allowing an earned run to start a season.

"Guys have made me feel welcome here from the beginning, but it's been a little extra special to win a couple of games," Greene said. "You want the guys to know you can contribute."

His solid start has taken on greater importance with Justin Verlander on the disabled list with a right triceps strain.

"(Greene) has so much movement on his pitches," manager Brad Ausmus said. "As long as he keeps the ball in the strike zone, he's always going to be tough to hit."

Greene had a so-so outing in his only start against the White Sox, giving up three runs and nine hits while striking out seven in five innings of the Yankees' 4-3 win Aug. 22.

He settled down in that outing after giving up a three-run homer in the first inning to Jose Abreu, who hit a grand slam in a seven-run fourth inning of Chicago's 12-3 win on Saturday.

Adam LaRoche hit a three-run homer, and Melky Cabrera finished 4 for 5 for the White Sox (4-6), who scored three runs while dropping its previous two games.

"Everybody knows what we are capable of doing. It was a good day for us," Abreu said through an interpreter. "I hope we can keep this momentum for the next one."

J.D. Martinez homered for Detroit, which scored five runs while winning its previous three, including Friday's series opener 2-1.

Yoenis Cespedes, acquired in the offseason deal that sent Porcello to Boston, went 0 for 3 on Saturday after homering the previous day. Cespedes is 4 for 6 with two homers and a double off Jose Quintana, who gets the start for Chicago in the series finale.

Quintana (1-0, 4.09) bounced back from a rough season debut by giving up an unearned run and three hits over six innings of Tuesday's 4-1 win over Cleveland. He did issue a pair of walks, though, after walking one and hitting two batters in a 7-5 loss to Kansas City on April 8.

"Q was erratic," manager Robin Ventura said. "He's a strong kid. He battles and at least gets you to the point where you can get the bullpen in there. He bobbed and weaved as well as he could."

The left-hander has won his last two starts against the Tigers, giving up four runs in 13 innings over those outings. However, Victor Martinez (7 for 18), Rajai Davis (10 for 26), and Miguel Cabrera (7 for 20) all have hit Quintana well.
