KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - When Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit on opening day, maybe then the Tigers will be able to enjoy a much-needed sense of normalcy.
As an offseason of drama gave way to spring training injuries, it was easy to forget the Tigers still have one of the most talented rosters in baseball. Sure, there have been some early problems for new manager Brad Ausmus to address, Detroit still figures to be the favorite to win its fourth consecutive AL Central title.
''We have a new look this year,'' outfielder Torii Hunter said. ''Little bit more speed and we'll miss the big man, but we'll score some runs.''
The ''big man'' is Prince Fielder, whom the Tigers traded to Texas in a blockbuster deal that brought second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit. That move gave the Tigers more financial flexibility, although they weren't all that aggressive in pursuing free agents. Detroit did sign Joe Nathan to replace departed closer Joaquin Benoit.
The Tigers also traded right-hander Doug Fister to Washington.
Lately, the focus has been on right-hander Max Scherzer, who enters his final season before free agency after winning the Cy Young Award in 2013. Negotiations with the Tigers on a long-term deal have stalled.
''They respect where I'm at. I respect where they're at, and we'll revisit this after the season,'' Scherzer said. ''I still want to be in Detroit. I love this clubhouse and everything about it. There's been a history of this team signing free agents so hopefully I'll be a part of that history as well.''
But right now Scherzer's future is uncertain, and with Hunter and Victor Martinez in the final season of their contracts, it's hard to say what Detroit's 2015 roster will look like.
So the Tigers may never have a better chance to win a World Series with this group than right now.

*Yankees-Tigers Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

New York (68-62) at Detroit (71-59), 1:08 p.m. EDT

After unleashing an impressive offensive outburst against a former Cy Young Award winner, the New York Yankees figure to relish facing a rookie in his second big-league game.

New York will look to conclude this series with another big performance Thursday night against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

The Yankees (69-62) shelled David Price for nine consecutive hits and 12 overall Wednesday night, chasing the left-hander after just two-plus innings in an 8-4 victory. New York's eight runs were its most this season without a homer, and it marked the second-shortest outing in 175 career starts for Price, who was coming off a one-hitter at Tampa Bay.

"Sometimes it just happens. The game doesn't always make sense," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's as good as it gets, and we were able to hit some balls in the holes, and it worked out."

Jacoby Ellsbury was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases to push his season total to 37 while improving his average to .486 over the last nine games. He's also 8 for 13 with six RBIs while hitting in the leadoff spot in his last three contests.

New York has scored seven-plus runs in three of four games and has won six of seven to pull within 2 1/2 games of Seattle for the second AL wild-card spot. The Yankees are two games back of the Tigers (71-60).

They'll dig in Thursday against Kyle Lobstein (0-0, 4.76 ERA), a second-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2008. The left-hander made his major league debut Saturday, throwing the last 5 2-3 innings in Detroit's 12-4 loss at Minnesota and gave up three runs and four hits while throwing 100 pitches.

Lobstein joined the team earlier in the day, getting the call from Triple-A Toledo to help a Tigers pitching staff that had been taxed heavily in a 20-6 loss a night earlier.

"I thought he did a good job," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He did what we thought he could do for us, and that is pitch a bunch of innings for us if we were in a jam."

Rookies are 6-8 in 18 starts versus the Yankees this year.

Brian McCann has 13 hits in his last 31 at-bats against left-handers with seven RBIs.

New York's Hiroki Kuroda (9-8, 3.94) has won back-to-back outings for the first time since July 20-25, 2013, allowing a combined four runs over 12 2-3 innings against Tampa Bay and the Chicago White Sox. His six strikeouts in Saturday's 5-3 victory over Chicago were his most in six starts.

"We need him down the stretch," Girardi told MLB's official website. "He's got the most experience out there and he's been pitching well."

Kuroda didn't record a decision in a 4-3 loss to Detroit on Aug. 5, allowing three runs in seven innings, and is 0-1 with a 3.76 ERA in four lifetime starts against the Tigers.

Detroit is the only team he's yet to defeat.

Miguel Cabrera, who has scored 14 runs while reaching base in 17 straight games, is 5 for 12 with two homers and a double against Kuroda.
