| |  | PHILADELPHIA: HITTING: This Phillies lineup had another subpar season, finishing 18th in the majors in homers (153) and 13th in runs (4.4 per game). The team re-signed free-agent SS JIMMY ROLLINS, especially because light-hitting WILSON VALDEZ is his backup. Raul Ibanez has left town, which allows OF JOHN MAYBERRY JR. to display his power on a daily basis. He had 15 HR in 267 at-bats last year. 1B RYAN HOWARD will not be ready for Opening Day after Achilles surgery in October, and will be replaced by a platoon of newcomers, JIM THOME and TY WIGGINTON. 2B CHASE UTLEY continues to be bothered by tendinitis in his knee, which has caused his numbers to drop significantly in the past two years. He will not be ready for Opening Day and no timetable has been set for his return. Veterans OF SHANE VICTORINO and C CARLOS RUIZ are both coming off typical productive seasons. OF HUNTER PENCE batted .324 with 11 HR after his trade from Houston and is poised for a huge 2012 campaign at age 28. 3B PLACIDO POLANCO is coming off his third Gold Glove season at the hot corner, but his .277 BA in 2011 was his lowest mark since 1999. Stud prospect OF DOMONIC BROWN is expected to begin the season in Triple-A.
STARTING PITCHING: ROY HALLADAY won the Cy Young Award in 2010 in his first year in Philadelphia, but he was even better in 2011, posting a career-best 2.35 ERA and also reaching a personal best with 220 strikeouts. CLIFF LEE was also outstanding in his first full season in a Phillies uniform, tallying six shutouts, which included a stretch of three straight blankings midway through the year. He wasn't afraid to pitch in Citizens Bank Park, going 11-3 with a 1.94 ERA at his new home. Like Halladay and Lee, COLE HAMELS also notched a career-best ERA (2.79) and held batters to a .214 average. Although he has the stigma of being oft-injured, Hamels was able to start 30+ games for the fourth straight season. VANCE WORLEY was impressive once he was inserted into the rotation, going 11-3 with a 3.02 ERA as a starter and fanning 73 over 74.2 innings of his final dozen starts. JOE BLANTON rounds out the rotation, but he could be limited a bit after an elbow injury cost him much of the 2011 season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Not willing to shell out the big money for inconsistent and oft-injured closer Brad Lidge, the Phillies decided to spend their dough on JONATHAN PAPELBON instead. The former Red Sox closer was 31-of-34 in save chances last year with a career-high 87 strikeouts and just 10 walks. With the departure of free agent Ryan Madson, ANTONIO BASTARDO assumes eighth-inning duties. The southpaw allowed a microscopic .144 opponents' BA, won six games and saved eight others last season. JOSE CONTERAS (age 40) returns for his seventh-inning duty and appears healthy enough to pitch following last year's season-ending elbow surgery. He is 9-of-10 in save chances since 2010. | | DETROIT: HITTING: OF AUSTIN JACKSON doesn't make much contact, but manager Jim Leyland likes his speed in the leadoff spot. RYAN RABURN and RAMON SANTIAGO will split second base duties, with Raburn getting the majority of the starts. 3B MIGUEL CABRERA seems to have cleaned up his act. He's an MVP candidate. So is newcomer 1B PRINCE FIELDER who will try to keep slugging in his move to a pitchers' park. His presence was needed after DH VICTOR MARTINEZ was lost for the season with a knee injury. OF DELMON YOUNG is a pending free agent, and he hit well after escaping spacious Target Field. He'll nab the starting LF job but could also DH. OF BRENNAN BOESCH did enough pre-injury to earn an everyday role, but he'll again be in danger of fading over the summer. SS JHONNY PERALTA had a resurgence in 2011, and he's on the right side of 30. C ALEX AVILA might not hit for average, but his power is legit. Leyland favorite BRANDON INGE and DON KELLY will back up the All-Star corner infielders, so neither expect to get much playing time. Streaky OF ANDY DIRKS is a fourth outfielder. C GERALD LAIRD will spell Avila.
STARTING PITCHING: You can't expect an identical stat line for JUSTIN VERLANDER; his opponent .236 batting average on balls in play suggests there was some luck involved in his MVP season. But he's still the best pitcher in the American League by a wide margin. DOUG FISTER's improved strikeout rate with the Tigers suggests he could sustain success as a quality No. 2 starter. MAX SCHERZER can still be outstanding when he's on, but he was inconsistent again last year. He could figure it out in his late-20s, but time is running out. RICK PORCELLO still has a ways to go. His mid-season success came against some weak lineups. He's still only 23, but he hasn't been able to beat hitters at any level in the pros. The Tigers are still searching for a No. 5 starter. Top prospect JACOB TURNER is only 20, but the Tigers haven't been shy about fast-tracking young arms. He was dominant in the minors, but torched in his first big-league stint. ANDY OLIVER appears to be the front-runner for this role, but DREW SMYLY is also a possibility.
RELIEF PITCHING: JOSE VALVERDE was perfect in 2011, but it was a surprising development considering his sliding K/BB ratio. For Tigers fans, he carries more risk than 49-for-49 would suggest. One of baseball's better set-up men, JOAQUIN BENOIT is an eighth-inning-only guy. He'd take over if Valverde got hurt. OCTAVIO DOTEL is another elite set-up man who will step up as the seventh-inning guy. As good as AL ALBURQUERQUE was in the regular season (one extra-base hit'a double'allowed in 43.1 innings!), he's out until at least the All-Star break after offseason elbow surgery. Lefty DANIEL SCHLERETH has a chance to be the closer of the future, but first he'll need to cut down on the walks. |

*Phillies-Tigers Preview* =========================

The Philadelphia Phillies have made almost every opposing starter look like an All-Star while struggling offensively this week.
That doesn't bode well considering they will face an actual one Saturday.
Max Scherzer seeks his major league-leading 15th victory as the Detroit Tigers attempt to hand the Phillies a season-worst seventh consecutive loss.
Scherzer (14-1, 3.14 ERA), who pitched a perfect opening inning for the AL in the All-Star game, came out of the break sharp Monday, allowing two solo homers and two other hits over eight innings in a 7-3 road victory over the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander won for the 20th time in his last 30 starts since Aug. 10, the most in the majors in that span.
"I was working ahead in the count, had four pitches going," Scherzer, who could become the first Tigers pitcher to start 15-1 dating back to at least 1919, told the team's official website. "I felt that made me effective and allowed me to have some quick innings. No walks - that's always a recipe for success."
Scherzer, making his first interleague start this year and first career appearance versus the Phillies, has had mixed results against NL opponents. He is 6-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 14 starts against the senior circuit but won both his home outings last year, striking out 27 in 15 innings in victories over Pittsburgh and Colorado.
The injury-ravaged Phillies (49-54) have plated only 10 runs during their losing streak, batting .208 with 48 strikeouts in 197 at-bats, and they've scored five times in their last five. Manager Charlie Manuel thinks the looming trade deadline is also contributing to his team's woes, noting, "We've got a lot of young, inexperienced players, and they get concerned about where they are going to be playing and who is going be traded."
Whatever the reasons, opposing starters have compiled a 1.36 ERA in the six contests, and the best pitcher in that group - NL All-Star starter Matt Harvey of the New York Mets - fanned 10 in seven innings of a 5-0 win Sunday.
Having a non-existent margin of error may not have mattered much to All-Star Cliff Lee, but the left-hander was scratched due to a stiff neck - fueling speculation the Phillies may deal him - and gives way to Raul Valdes (1-0, 7.59 ERA). The left-hander went 3-4 with a 3.10 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 66 2-3 innings over 12 starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley before being recalled Tuesday, when he allowed one run and two hits in 1 1-3 innings in relief of a 4-1 loss at St. Louis.
Valdes, who will make his third career start and first since June 27, 2012, has never faced the Tigers.
He may catch a break if slugger Miguel Cabrera is sidelined for a fifth straight game due to a sore left hip flexor. The AL MVP took batting practice prior to Friday's 2-1 victory and may be available as a DH or pinch hitter, but the Tigers (57-45) continue to be cautious with the 2012 Triple Crown winner.
"Obviously, you'd rather lose Miguel Cabrera for two or three games than two or three weeks," trainer Kevin Rand told the team's official website. "He's feeling a lot better, but he still feels he needs another day or so. It's important for us to make sure that he's right before he comes back."
Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter should be available after missing Friday's win due to a sore Achilles he said occurred by wearing dress shoes that were too tight. He is 6 for 14 with three homers in his last four games.
