| | | BALTIMORE: HITTING: The leadoff spot is 2B BRIAN ROBERTS' if he can stay on the field. His recent injury history is very troubling, though his talent makes him a risk worth taking. 2B ROBERT ANDINO and 2B RYAN ADAMS would compete for time if Roberts is out. The O's best hitter last year was arguably SS J.J. HARDY. He was healthy for the first time in years and flexed his legit 30-HR power. If Roberts and Hardy stay healthy, OF NICK MARKAKIS will likely hit third and see an increase in RBI chances. OF ADAM JONES seems to have the highest ceiling of any Baltimore hitter. 3B MARK REYNOLDS will probably end up at 1B. His horrendous average cancels out some of his 40-HR potential. OF NOLAN REIMOLD revived his MLB career with an impressive end of the season. He's got a shot to start in left. 1B CHRIS DAVIS is a candidate to start at first, third or DH as sort of a Junior Mark Reynolds. C MATT WIETERS is already one of the best two-way backstops in baseball at age 25.
STARTING PITCHING: WEI-YIN CHEN pitched well enough in Japan (2.48 ERA, 1.06 WHIP in past four seasons) to become the de-facto ace of this horrible pitching staff. JAKE ARRIETA is a mediocre talent, but is good enough to secure a spot as a Baltimore starter. JASON HAMMEL hopes the switch from Coors Field will help lower his career ERA of 4.99. The highest-risk, highest-potential O's pitcher may be BRIAN MATUSZ. His 2011 line is frightening (10.69 ERA, 2.11 WHIP), but he has the raw skills and pitch repertoire to turn it around. TOMMY HUNTER came over from Texas midseason and should round out the rotation. RELIEF PITCHING: There was talk of JIM JOHNSON being converted into a starter, but he'll open the season as the team's closer. Johnson established himself as the O's best option to close after going 7-for-7 in that role last September. KEVIN GREGG would step in as the ninth-inning man if Johnson falters. He was unstable in that role last year. Gregg is a trade candidate this midseason, in which case he'd probably end up a set-up man elsewhere. Flame-throwing MATT LINDSTROM is a darkhorse for saves. He saved 23 games for Houston in 2010 before being used as a set-up man in Colorado last year. TSUYOSHI WADA brings his finesse game from Japan. He's a heady hurler who hides the ball well, but he's in for a rude awakening in the A.L. East. BRAD BERGESEN and CHRIS JAKUBAUSKAS are long relievers who may get bumped into the rotation if the young Baltimore SPs struggle again. | | DETROIT: HITTING: OF AUSTIN JACKSON doesn't make much contact, but manager Jim Leyland likes his speed in the leadoff spot. RYAN RABURN and RAMON SANTIAGO will split second base duties, with Raburn getting the majority of the starts. 3B MIGUEL CABRERA seems to have cleaned up his act. He's an MVP candidate. So is newcomer 1B PRINCE FIELDER who will try to keep slugging in his move to a pitchers' park. His presence was needed after DH VICTOR MARTINEZ was lost for the season with a knee injury. OF DELMON YOUNG is a pending free agent, and he hit well after escaping spacious Target Field. He'll nab the starting LF job but could also DH. OF BRENNAN BOESCH did enough pre-injury to earn an everyday role, but he'll again be in danger of fading over the summer. SS JHONNY PERALTA had a resurgence in 2011, and he's on the right side of 30. C ALEX AVILA might not hit for average, but his power is legit. Leyland favorite BRANDON INGE and DON KELLY will back up the All-Star corner infielders, so neither expect to get much playing time. Streaky OF ANDY DIRKS is a fourth outfielder. C GERALD LAIRD will spell Avila. STARTING PITCHING: You can't expect an identical stat line for JUSTIN VERLANDER; his opponent .236 batting average on balls in play suggests there was some luck involved in his MVP season. But he's still the best pitcher in the American League by a wide margin. DOUG FISTER's improved strikeout rate with the Tigers suggests he could sustain success as a quality No. 2 starter. MAX SCHERZER can still be outstanding when he's on, but he was inconsistent again last year. He could figure it out in his late-20s, but time is running out. RICK PORCELLO still has a ways to go. His mid-season success came against some weak lineups. He's still only 23, but he hasn't been able to beat hitters at any level in the pros. The Tigers are still searching for a No. 5 starter. Top prospect JACOB TURNER is only 20, but the Tigers haven't been shy about fast-tracking young arms. He was dominant in the minors, but torched in his first big-league stint. ANDY OLIVER appears to be the front-runner for this role, but DREW SMYLY is also a possibility. RELIEF PITCHING: JOSE VALVERDE was perfect in 2011, but it was a surprising development considering his sliding K/BB ratio. For Tigers fans, he carries more risk than 49-for-49 would suggest. One of baseball's better set-up men, JOAQUIN BENOIT is an eighth-inning-only guy. He'd take over if Valverde got hurt. OCTAVIO DOTEL is another elite set-up man who will step up as the seventh-inning guy. As good as AL ALBURQUERQUE was in the regular season (one extra-base hit'a double'allowed in 43.1 innings!), he's out until at least the All-Star break after offseason elbow surgery. Lefty DANIEL SCHLERETH has a chance to be the closer of the future, but first he'll need to cut down on the walks. |

*Orioles-Tigers Preview* ========================
By JON PALMIERI STATS Editor
Baltimore (40-31) at Detroit (39-29), 1:08 p.m. EDT
With arguably the best offense in baseball, the Baltimore Orioles know their biggest area of concern is on the mound. Just not lately when Chris Tillman is there.
Tillman looks to win his fourth straight start Wednesday as the visiting Orioles close a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers.
After spending the first half of last season in the minors, Tillman was a different pitcher upon his return to the Orioles and finished 9-3 with a 2.93 ERA in 15 starts.
Although he had some uneven performances early this season, Tillman (7-2, 3.61 ERA) has been outstanding lately. He is 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA in three starts this month, allowing 11 hits in 19 innings.
The right-hander has saved some of his best pitching for the road, where he is 5-0 with a 2.41 ERA in six outings. He's 9-1 with a 2.97 ERA in his past 13 away from Baltimore.
Tillman limited Boston to three hits over six-plus innings and allowed only one runner past second base in a 2-0 victory Friday.
"I said it in the spring," manager Buck Showalter said. "Chris came in full aware that he was out of options. But he pitched like a guy who had three and didn't want to go to (Triple-A) Norfolk. And that shows a lot of maturity, because he wanted to be a guy for us this year - and he has been so far."
Tillman is 1-0 in four starts against the Tigers but hasn't faced them since April 7, 2011.
One night after they were shut down by Max Scherzer, the Orioles (41-31) bounced back with two home runs off Justin Verlander in a 5-2 victory Tuesday. Adam Jones hit a three-run shot and J.J. Hardy added a two-run blast in support of Zach Britton's first win since Sept. 4.
"We battled against (Verlander)," said Jones, who has four homers and 13 RBIs in his last 10 games. "Sometimes you get beat, and tonight, we beat him."
With its seventh win in 10 games overall, Baltimore improved to 11-5 this season against division leaders Boston, Detroit (39-30) and Oakland.
The Orioles have homered in seven straight games, raising their major league-leading total to 95. They also rank among the top five in runs, batting average, doubles and slugging percentage.
Detroit's five-game home win streak was snapped despite two hits from Miguel Cabrera, who is 9 for 21 (.429) with three homers and eight RBIs against Baltimore this year.
He's 3 for 7 with a home run and a double off Tillman.
Something of an afterthought in a loaded rotation, Rick Porcello (4-3, 4.37) has been anything but for the Tigers lately.
The right-hander is 2-1 with a 1.33 ERA in his last four starts. He's stuck out 30 over 27 innings during that span, allowing 15 hits and four walks.
"I've honestly really felt confident all year," Porcello said. "I like what I've been working on, especially in the offseason going into spring training, and I'm starting to get some good results from it now."
He got more of that in a 4-0 win at Minnesota on Friday, yielding three hits without a walk in seven innings.
Porcello is 1-4 with a 4.50 ERA in six career starts against the Orioles, who reached him for three runs over six innings in a 4-2 victory June 2.
Chris Davis homered in that game and has gone deep twice off Porcello in nine career at-bats. Davis was 0 for 4 on Tuesday after hitting his major league-best 24th homer and fourth in six games in the series opener.
