PREVIEW
Rookies face off in Padres-Rockies series finale

An explosive four-game series at Coors Field in Denver wraps up Sunday afternoon with two rookie pitchers facing each other in a National League West matchup.

Colorado right-hander Peter Lambert (2-0, 1.50 ERA) is making his third start since being added to the 40-man roster on June 6, and he is making his first start against a team other than the Chicago Cubs. He will go up against Padres left-hander Nick Margevicius, who is making his 12th start of the season.

Margevicius (2-6, 5.02) made his major league debut on March 30 in a loss to San Francisco, but he allowed just one run on three hits over five innings. He got his first big-league win 11 days later against the same Giants squad, and through his first three starts was 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA.

Then Colorado came to town and roughed him up in his only outing against the Rockies. Colorado tagged him for five runs on seven hits in four innings in an 8-2 win at San Diego on April 16. Margevicius gets a chance at redemption on Sunday.

"He's getting an opportunity to respond to a club that hit him very well. People are looking forward to him doing that," Padres manager Andy Green told reporters Saturday. "We shortened his last start; we've given him more time between starts. We want to see him go out here and attack these guys with all of his pitches, his full mix, full arsenal.

"We were pleased with what he gave us last time out and see what he can do for us this time."

Margevicius had allowed 16 runs (15 earned) in 12 innings across three starts before he threw 3 2/3 shutout innings against Washington on June 7.

The Padres and Rockies have combined to score 65 runs in the first three games of the series, including an historic comeback for the Padres on Friday night. They trailed 11-5 entering the ninth inning and tied it to force extra innings. They scored five more in the 12th and won 16-12.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Padres had never won a game when trailing by six runs entering the ninth, and the Rockies had never blown a lead of that margin in the ninth inning.

A day later, Colorado saw a seven-run lead reduced to three before pulling away for a 14-8 win.

Now, Lambert has a chance to give the Colorado bullpen some much-needed rest. He showed he can pitch in difficult circumstances in his two outings against the Cubs. He allowed one run in seven innings at Chicago in his debut June 6, and then held the Cubs to one run over five innings on Tuesday, allowing seven total hits in the two starts.

"He has great stuff. The curveball is really good," catcher Chris Iannetta said after Lambert's second start. "The changeup's a plus changeup. His fastball command is plus when he has it. He understands that executing pitches is the way he's going to be successful, and he reverts back to that instead of trying to out-stuff guys.

"He's pretty cerebral. He knows what he's trying to do out there. And he has a really good understanding of his body and his mechanics. He has a plan of attack, and he has great command on top of that and that really helps."
