Who's gone? OF Seth Smith, SS Ketel Marte, C Chris Iannetta, OF Nori Aoki, RHP Taijuan Walker, RHP Nathan Karns, LHP Vidal Nuno, LHP David Rollins, RHP Tom Wilhelmsen
Projected lineup: LF Jarrod Dyson (.278, 1 HR, 25 RBI, 30 SB with Royals), SS Jean Segura (.319, 20, 64, 33 with Diamondbacks), 2B Robinson Cano (.298, 39, 103), DH Nelson Cruz (.287, 43, 105), 3B Kyle Seager (.278, 30, 99), C Mike Zunino (.207, 12, 31), 1B Danny Valencia (.287, 17, 51 with A's), RF Mitch Haniger (.229, 5, 17 in 34 games with Diamondbacks), CF Leonys Martin (.247, 15, 47, 24 SB)
Rotation: RH Felix Hernandez (11-8, 3.82), RH Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12, 4.12), LH James Paxton (6-7, 3.79), RH Yovani Gallardo (6-8, 5.42 with Orioles), LH Drew Smyly (7-12, 4.88 with Rays)
Key relievers: RH Steve Cishek (4-6, 2.81, 25/32 SV), RH Edwin Diaz (0-4, 2.79, 18/21), RH Nick Vincent (4-4, 3.73), RH Evan Scribner (0-0, 0.00 in 12 games), LH Marc Rzepczynski (1-0, 2.64 with A's and Nationals), RH Casey Fien (1-1, 5.49 with Twins and Dodgers)
Hot spots: First base and right field. Veteran Valencia has the first baseman's job for now, but Dan Vogelbach is the heir apparent who will begin the season at Triple-A. Vogelbach, 24, slimmed down this offseason ' a necessity when you're 6 feet tall, weigh 250 pounds and expect to play your first full major league season ' and might have more weight to lose. Valencia, 32, has never been a full-time first baseman in seven seasons. Haniger is known more for his glove than his bat, but he struggled (.713 OPS) in limited time at a hitter-friendly park in Arizona last year. Safeco Field won't be as kind. Cruz will play right field if Haniger doesn't.
Outlook: General Manager Jerry Dipoto has paired a staff of fly-ball pitchers with three rangy outfielders, an exercise in team-building he once tried with the Angels. Dipoto caused a stir by executing 40 roster transactions during the offseason, but is it possible he didn't do enough? Haniger has never been atop a major league depth chart. Pitchers Gallardo and Smyly are coming off shaky seasons in Baltimore and Tampa Bay, respectively. On paper, the Mariners look like a top-heavy team without much help in the minors if the bottom falls out. That was the case for Dipoto with the Angels too, and sometimes it worked out OK. More often it didn't. | | COLORADO: 2016: 75-87, third place
Manager: Bud Black (first season)

Who's gone? Manager Walt Weiss, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Eddie Butler, LHP Boone Logan, C Nick Hundley, IF Daniel Descalso, OF Ryan Raburn

LeMahieu (.348, 11, 66, 11), 3B Nolan Arenado (.294, 41, 133), RF Carlos Gonzalez (.298, 25, 100), 1B Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53), LF David Dahl (.315, 7, 24) or Gerardo Parra (.253, 7, 39), SS Trevor Story (.272, 27, 72), C Tony Wolters (.259, 3, 30)
Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best. |
| | Mariners need Cruz's bat against Rockies
DENVER -- Nelson Cruz hit cleanup as usual Monday for the Seattle Mariners and very likely will do so Tuesday when they finish a two-game interleague set against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Cruz has been Seattle's designated hitter in 45 of 46 American League games, but to get him in the lineup against the Rockies, Mariners manager Scott Servais started him in right field. Cruz did start 48 games at that position last year, and he played two games in right field in Washington on Seattle's current road trip. However, the outfield at Coors Field is spacious, something Servais considered in passing. "It's probably the most challenging in the league to play in," Servais said, "but we need Cruz's bat in the lineup. We know we're going to need to score runs here; he's a big part of what we're trying to do offensively. And not just the bat, what he does for our team from a leadership standpoint. It means a lot to our team." Cruz went 0-for-4 with one RBI on Monday in Seattle's 6-5 win over the Rockies. He drew a walk and scored a run in the Mariners' three-run fifth that increased their lead to 6-2. Cruz flied out to the right field wall in the ninth and drove in a run in the third on a slow grounder that third baseman Nolan Arenado charged and barehanded. Left-hander Ariel Miranda (4-2, 4.22 ERA) will start for the Mariners against left-hander Tyler Anderson (3-4, 5.40 ERA). Anderson has never faced Seattle. In his past four starts, Anderson is 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA, allowing 21 hits and seven walks in 24 2/3 innings with 32 strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision in his last start at Philadelphia on Thursday, when he pitched a season-high seven innings and allowed one run on six hits. He walked two and struck out seven in a game the Rockies lost 2-1. In three interleague starts, all at Coors Field, Anderson is 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA. Miranda won his most recent start, Thursday at Washington, allowing three hits and two runs in five innings with three walks and four strikeouts in the Mariners' 4-2 victory. He will be facing the Rockies for the first time. He is 2-0 with a 5.57 ERA in four career interleague starts. Miranda will be facing an improving Trevor Story. The Rockies shortstop went 1-for-4 and hit his eighth homer of the season Monday. Since being reinstated after missing 13 games due to a strained left shoulder, Story has gone 5-for-19 (.263) with two homers and five RBIs and five strikeouts. At the time of his injury, Story was hitting .180 (20-for-111) with 48 strikeouts. "He's getting closer," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "I liked the opposite-field homer he hit in Philadelphia (on Thursday off Vince Velasquez). I liked the opposite-field homer today. He's staying on pitches." The Mariners, whom the Rockies had not played since 2015, pose an interesting challenge for a young hitter such as Story. He faced three pitchers -- Gaviglio, left-hander James Pazos and closer Edwin Diaz -- for the first time Monday. "It's tough when you haven't seen guys, but that's part of it," Story said. "Just go out there and compete as best you can." |
