| | | LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results. They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona. With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series. ''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January. The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks. ''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.'' First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.
| | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

| | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PA SPORTSTICKER NL PREVIEW (LA DODGERS-COLORADO) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Dodgers-Rockies Preview* =========================
Los Angeles (84-64) at Colorado (59-89), 8:40 p.m. EDT
The Los Angeles Dodgers captured a huge weekend series against the team directly behind them in the NL West, yet they are wary of facing the league's worst team next.
The Colorado Rockies are struggling to score and have dropped six straight but have been playing well at home as they open a three-game set Monday night.
Los Angeles (85-64) took the final two games of its series in San Francisco, winning 17-0 on Saturday and 4-2 on Sunday. The Dodgers, winners in seven of nine, hold a three-game lead over the second-place Giants.
Manager Don Mattingly's club is 9-4 against the Rockies (59-90), but he is concerned about the start of this series after an emotional one against the Dodgers' arch-rivals.
"Any time you leave here it's tough," Mattingly told MLB's official website. "Play a series against these guys, and the next one is always a little bit of a flat spot. We talk about it, just being ready to play tomorrow and trying to fight it."
It was a theme echoed by Matt Kemp, who went 4 for 8 with five RBIs in the last two games. Kemp is hitting .400 with 11 RBIs against Colorado this year.
"This series is definitely big for us, it gives us some momentum going to Colorado," Kemp said. "Colorado always plays us tough so we gotta go in there and stick with our plan and play those guys like we know how."
The Rockies totaled eight runs while batting .204 in a winless six-game trip capped by Sunday's 4-1 defeat to St. Louis. They are averaging a major league-worst 3.1 runs on the road compared to a baseball-best 5.9 at home.
"We've talked about it to death," manager Walt Weiss said. "The guys are trying to take the right approach."
The Rockies have won 11 of their last 15 home games, and could get a boost if Justin Morneau returns to the lineup Monday. He has missed the last two games with intercostal soreness in his left side.
"I don't expect it should be too much longer," said Morneau, who is second in the NL with a .315 average.
Morneau is a .333 hitter with four homers in 36 at-bats against Dodgers starter Roberto Hernandez (8-11, 4.04 ERA), who posted a 7.45 ERA with no decisions in two 2014 starts against the Rockies while with Philadelphia. Brandon Barnes went 4 for 4 off Hernandez in those outings and Morneau was 3 for 5 with one homer.
Hernandez is 2-3 with a 4.75 ERA in six outings with Los Angeles. The right-hander has given up 10 runs over 7 1-3 innings in back-to-back defeats.
Rookie Colorado starter Christian Bergman (2-3, 4.89) will face the Dodgers for the first time. He is 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA in four starts since he was activated from the 60-day disabled list Aug. 24.
The right-hander has a 6.33 ERA at home compared to 3.12 on the road, where he gave up two runs in six innings in last Tuesday's 2-0 loss to the New York Mets.
The Dodgers' Carl Crawford is 12 for 20 with eight RBIs in his last five games, while Hanley Ramirez has 11 hits in his last 22 at-bats.
