| | | WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Thanks in part to No. 1 overall draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the 2012 Washington Nationals were considered an up-and-coming team, perhaps a year or two away from contending.
So what did they do? Went out and led the majors with 98 wins.
Thanks to that quick rise, the 2013 Nationals became a popular pick to go to the World Series. So what did they do? Stumbled at the start and missed out on the playoffs.
Now here come the 2014 Nationals, featuring largely the same roster - including Strasburg on the mound, and Harper in left field, both feeling good after offseason surgery - and with rookie manager Matt Williams replacing Davey Johnson, he of the ''World Series or bust'' proclamation.
One key difference: The club knows what it's like to experience a truly disappointing, worse-than-they-were-supposed-to-be season for the first time since moving from Montreal in 2005.
''We got ahead of ourselves a little bit. My take on it was always: Last year in spring training, we had expectations on ourselves, really, for the first time, and we thought we were better, maybe, than we were,'' reliever Tyler Clippard said. ''We came into the season expecting to win, which is a good thing. But at the same time, we might not have went out there and earned it, like we should have.''
Yes, the team that got Strasburg and Harper thanks to consecutive 100-loss seasons is trying to deal with lofty goals.
''To see the organization from basically, literally, the ground up, improve is something I kind of take pride in, because when I signed, people would be like, `Oh, you play for the Expos and the Nationals,' and they'd be like, `Uh, OK, I don't know them,''' said shortstop Ian Desmond, drafted by Montreal in 2004. ''And now, it's like there's some pride behind playing for the Washington Nationals.''
| | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

*Nationals-Rockies Preview* ===========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Washington (53-43) at Colorado (40-58), 8:40 p.m. EDT
While Jordan Zimmermann is healthy enough to take the mound for the Washington Nationals, injuries continue to mount for the Colorado Rockies.
Looking to maintain his success versus Colorado, the right-hander will try to help the visiting Nationals improve to 5-0 this season against a Rockies team trying to avoid a seventh straight defeat Tuesday night.
Zimmermann (6-5, 3.03 ERA) allowed seven runs in 50 innings while going 3-2 during a seven-start stretch prior to July 11, when he gave up four runs in 3 1-3 innings before departing a 6-2 loss at Philadelphia because of a biceps strain.
Though the injury forced Zimmermann to miss last week's All-Star game, he didn't encounter any problems during a weekend bullpen session.
"He is good to go," manager Matt Williams told MLB's official website. "We will not go in with any (pitch) limit on him. He can go as normal as long as he feels good."
Zimmermann allowed two runs in six innings of a 7-3 win June 30 to improve to 5-0 with a 1.64 ERA in seven starts versus Colorado (40-59). He's 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in three outings at Coors Field.
He won't have to face Justin Morneau, who was placed on the disabled list Monday with a neck strain.
It's uncertain if star Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will miss a third consecutive contest with a thigh injury. Tulowitzki is hitting a major league-high .340 with 21 home runs and 52 RBIs, but he and the team plan to take the cautious approach.
"Numerous times in my career I've played through things like this and gotten myself in trouble," he said. "So it's time to be smart. And when I get back out there, that I'm able to go 100 percent."
Colorado also placed reliever Boone Logan on the DL with diverticulitis.
Teammate Carlos Gonzalez appeared to jam both wrists sliding into third base in the sixth inning of Monday's 7-2 loss to Washington (54-43), but remained in the game.
Gonzalez is batting .214 (6 for 28) in seven games since missing more than a month with a finger injury for the Rockies, who have dropped 24 of 30 since winning a season-high five in a row.
"I don't know what else can happen this year," Gonzalez said.
All-Star Charlie Blackmon, however, went 1 for 5 after sitting out Sunday with a sore ankle. He's batting .467 (14 for 30) in his last seven games and is 1 for 3 versus Zimmermann.
Ian Desmond belted a two-run homer for one of his five hits Monday for the NL East-leading Nationals, who have won three straight and 13 of 18.
"Anytime we win, it's a great day," Monday's winning pitcher Doug Fister said. "We want to make sure we get that winning feeling."
Desmond is hitting .385 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in his last 13 games, and .618 (21 for 34) with three homers and 12 RBIs in his last eight at Coors Field.
He went 1 for 2 with a double off Yohan Flande (0-2, 7.36), who gave up three runs in 5 1-3 innings while opposing Zimmermann last month in his second career start.
The left-hander followed that effort by allowing five runs and nine hits in 4 1-3 innings of an 8-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 6.
