KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Thanks in part to No. 1 overall draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the 2012 Washington Nationals were considered an up-and-coming team, perhaps a year or two away from contending.
So what did they do? Went out and led the majors with 98 wins.
Thanks to that quick rise, the 2013 Nationals became a popular pick to go to the World Series. So what did they do? Stumbled at the start and missed out on the playoffs.
Now here come the 2014 Nationals, featuring largely the same roster - including Strasburg on the mound, and Harper in left field, both feeling good after offseason surgery - and with rookie manager Matt Williams replacing Davey Johnson, he of the ''World Series or bust'' proclamation.
One key difference: The club knows what it's like to experience a truly disappointing, worse-than-they-were-supposed-to-be season for the first time since moving from Montreal in 2005.
''We got ahead of ourselves a little bit. My take on it was always: Last year in spring training, we had expectations on ourselves, really, for the first time, and we thought we were better, maybe, than we were,'' reliever Tyler Clippard said. ''We came into the season expecting to win, which is a good thing. But at the same time, we might not have went out there and earned it, like we should have.''
Yes, the team that got Strasburg and Harper thanks to consecutive 100-loss seasons is trying to deal with lofty goals.
''To see the organization from basically, literally, the ground up, improve is something I kind of take pride in, because when I signed, people would be like, `Oh, you play for the Expos and the Nationals,' and they'd be like, `Uh, OK, I don't know them,''' said shortstop Ian Desmond, drafted by Montreal in 2004. ''And now, it's like there's some pride behind playing for the Washington Nationals.''
COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

*Nationals-Rockies Preview* ===========================

Washington (52-43) at Colorado (40-57), 8:40 p.m. EDT

Washington Nationals slugger Ryan Zimmerman came out swinging after the All-Star break and now he gets another shot at a team he has fared very well against in the past.

The last-place Colorado Rockies are losers of five straight and could return home with a depleted lineup.

Zimmerman looks to continue his success against the Rockies on Monday night in the opener of a three-game set in Denver.

The Nationals third baseman went 6 for 12 with a homer and five RBIs over the weekend as his club won two of three at home over Milwaukee. He's 11 for 26 with 10 RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak.

Zimmerman is a career .348 hitter against Colorado (40-58) for his highest mark against any team. His .368 average in 29 games at Coors Field is his best in any ballpark.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss, meanwhile, can't be sure who he will pencil into Monday's lineup.

Troy Tulowitzki, who leads the majors with a .340 average, sat out Sunday's 5-3 defeat at Pittsburgh. He suffered a cramp in the tensor fascia latae of his left thigh while running out a grounder Saturday.

"He's sore," Weiss told MLB's official website. "I still consider him day to day, but he's sore. It could be a couple or three days. We'll monitor it and just check in with him hourly, but I'm expecting it to be another day or two."

Colorado has other injury concerns as well.

Justin Morneau missed a third straight game with a stiff neck while All-Star outfielder Charlie Blackmon sat out Sunday's contest with an ankle injury. Weiss indicated that Blackmon is more likely to return Monday.

Those three players were all available June 30-July 2, but it didn't matter as Washington (53-43) swept a three-game set in which Zimmerman went 5 for 9.

Nationals starter Doug Fister (8-2, 2.90 ERA) will pitch at Coors Field for the first time after going 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two previous starts against the Rockies. He probably doesn't want to see Morneau, who is 9 for 28 with a homer against him.

The right-hander improved to 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA in his last four outings by limiting Baltimore to two runs over seven innings July 9 in a 6-2 road win.

Colorado will counter with Franklin Morales (5-4, 5.26), who is 2-0 with a 3.45 ERA in his last five home starts.

The left-hander won for the first time in eight starts July 8 by allowing one run over 5 2-3 innings in a 2-1 victory over San Diego.

Morales has never started against Washington, throwing 6 2-3 scoreless innings in five relief appearances.

The Rockies can't be confident even if Morales exits with a lead since their bullpen coughed up leads in all three weekend losses.

"You've got to be able to put games away, and it's frustrating," Weiss said.

Washington has won 12 of 17. Jayson Werth's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth Sunday gave the Nationals a 5-4 victory.

"It's why we do this," Werth said. "If you find yourself in that situation and you don't want to be there, I think you're in the wrong line of work."
