KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.
COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

*Padres-Rockies Preview* ========================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

San Diego (39-49) at Colorado (37-52), 8:40 p.m. EDT

After throwing his first shutout, San Diego's Tyson Ross capped a memorable week with his first All-Star nod.

Now, he'll try to get back to business as the Padres continue a three-game road set against the slumping Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

Ross (7-8, 2.93 ERA) will be San Diego's lone representative at next Tuesday's Midsummer Classic after coming into his own in his fifth big league season. The right-hander has recorded 111 strikeouts in 116 2-3 innings and a .228 opponent's batting average to rank among the NL's top 10 in both categories.

"It's something I still can't wrap my head around," he told MLB's official website. "It's been an incredible journey for me."

Ross also had plenty to celebrate a few days earlier after throwing a three-hitter opposite Johnny Cueto in Wednesday's 3-0 victory over Cincinnati. Ross matched a season high with nine strikeouts and didn't walk anybody.

"Tyson made (the lead) hold up against the guy that's probably gonna start the All-Star game," manager Bud Black said. "That's what I like - (Cueto's) probably going to start the All-Star Game, and Tyson outpitched him.

"It's a tremendous feather in his cap. You do it once, you can do it many more times. Good for him."

Ross, the only starter to make the All-Star team with a losing record, had gone 0-4 with a 3.94 ERA over his previous five starts while receiving a combined one run of support. He went 0-1 in three starts against the Rockies last season despite a 2.76 ERA, holding them to a .190 average.

The Padres (40-49) have won six of eight after pulling out a 6-1 victory in Monday's series opener. Chase Headley went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and Ian Kennedy threw seven strong innings.

Headley, who also collected four hits Friday, has gone 12 for 26 while hitting safely in all six games this month.

"The last couple of weeks I've felt close to where I want to be," Headley said after raising his average to .229. "It's been good the last few games to swing well. I feel like I've been able to control the barrel."

The Rockies (37-53) are a major league-worst 3-18 since June 16 after dropping seven of their last eight. Drew Stubbs provided all the offense Monday with his second homer in three days.

"We can't afford to lose series," manager Walt Weiss said. "Bottom line is we have to start winning."

Rockies leadoff hitter Charlie Blackmon will join Ross and teammate Troy Tulowitzki at the All-Star game, but he's hitting .167 with one run and one RBI over his last 11 games. Third baseman Nolan Arenado is 2 for 19 since coming off the DL on Thursday.

Tulowitzki leads the majors with a .349 average, including a .437 mark at home. He's batting .395 with three homers and eight RBIs over his last 10 at home against San Diego.

Franklin Morales (4-4, 5.51) is set to make his second start since rejoining Colorado's rotation in place of the injured Jhoulys Chacin. The left-hander gave up two runs - one earned - over five innings Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, going without a decision in the 3-2 defeat.

Morales is 0-3 with a 6.81 ERA over his last seven starts dating to May. He yielded one run over six innings and earned the victory in a 3-1 win at San Diego on April 17, his first start against the Padres since 2007.
