| | | PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard and his teammates have heard critics say the window has closed for the Philadelphia Phillies.
They just don't believe it.
After a dominant run that included five straight NL East titles, two pennants and the 2008 World Series championship, the Phillies have missed the postseason two consecutive years. They have an aging core of players who've been declining.
Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz are the remaining regulars from the group that led Philadelphia to its best era of baseball from 2007-11 under former manager Charlie Manuel.
They're determined to make another run.
''We've had a bad couple years and had injuries and all that stuff, but I don't think it's over,'' Howard said. ''People are entitled to their opinions and that's fine, but it's up to us to go out there and show them otherwise and go out and play our game and do what we do.''
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. refused to start the rebuilding process after the Phillies' first losing season since 2002. Instead, he re-signed Utley and Ruiz and added veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and right-hander A.J. Burnett in free agency.
If the older players live up to their hefty contracts and younger guys like 2013 All-Star Domonic Brown, Cody Asche and Ben Revere continue to develop, the Phillies should be in contention.
''I think we're positive. We're expecting to win and plan on doing everything we can to ensure that,'' ace lefty Cliff Lee said.
| | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

*Phillies-Rockies Preview* ==========================
By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer
Philadelphia (7-8) at Colorado (8-9), 8:10 p.m. EDT
The Colorado Rockies returned home from a seven-game trip and wasted little time before getting back to their hot hitting in front of their home fans.
After an impressive showing in the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Rockies' bats will try for an encore performance Saturday night as they seek a third series win in as many tries at Coors Field this season.
Colorado (9-9) scored seven runs in the first two innings of Friday's 12-1 win over Philadelphia (7-9), and its 18 hits boosted the club's season average to an MLB-best .296.
Outfielders Charlie Blackmon and Drew Stubbs both went 3 for 5 and Troy Tulowitzki was 3 for 3 with a three-run homer and five RBIs. Blackmon has set the table in the leadoff spot with a .426 average, while Tulowitzki is batting .360 with an OPS of 1.080.
"I hit the ball about as well as I can hit a ball. I felt good," said Tulowitzki, who is batting .500 with three homers and nine RBIs on a six-game hitting streak against the Phillies.
Rockies starter Jordan Lyles now has the luxury of taking the mound fairly confident that run support is coming his way. The Rockies are batting .367 with a .998 OPS and 32 extra-base hits in seven home games and at least eight runs in each of their five wins.
"Their offense is potent," Philadelphia outfielder Marlon Byrd told the team's official website. "They know how to play here. They love playing here and hitting here. We have to try to back them against the wall early in the game and help our pitching out."
Lyles (2-0, 4.32 ERA) has benefited both at home and away with a 9.18 average of run support. After winning his first two starts, he was stuck with a no-decision in Monday's 5-4 loss in San Diego. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits in five innings.
In two career starts against Philadelphia, he has a 4.09 ERA and is yet to record a decision.
Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick could have the tougher task trying to douse Colorado's bats in search of his first win. He took a no-decision in Sunday's 4-3 home win over Miami after allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings.
Kendrick (0-1, 3.50 ERA) hasn't lost in five career starts at Coors Field, but he hasn't exactly dazzled. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 5.83 ERA and the Rockies have hit .331 in those games.
If the Philadelphia bats are going to match Colorado's, they'll have to substantially pick up their recent production. They managed just two hits in the series opener and have scored two runs in their last three games thanks to a .169 on-base percentage.
On Friday, the top seven spots in the lineup went 0 for 24 as a 10-game road trip got off to a sour start.
"A great road trip is 8-2," Byrd said. "We already have one loss into that so we've got to pick it up tomorrow and try to score some runs early."
Rockies pitching, meanwhile, has limited opponents to six earned runs on a .198 average in the last four games.
Colorado outfielder Michael Cuddyer sat out Friday to rest a sore left hamstring and is considered day-to-day, but a stint on the disabled list isn't out of the question.
"I'm hoping," manager Walt Weiss told the team's official website. "You never know with these things but I feel pretty good that he won't have to go on the DL."
