| | | ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss. A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery. Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool. Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth. ''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.'' Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training. ''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
| | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

*Diamondbacks-Rockies Preview* ==============================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Arizona (1-5) at Colorado (1-3), 8:10 p.m. EDT
The Colorado Rockies had their moments offensively in an otherwise disappointing opening series, but nothing they did in their first four games came close to what they accomplished in their home opener.
After Charlie Blackmon provided one of the most impressive individual performances in franchise history, the Rockies will try to build on their 17-hit outbreak Saturday night as they continue their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Colorado scored 15 runs in its season-opening series at Miami - 11 in its final two games - but gave up 27 in dropping three of four.
It put it all together Friday as Juan Nicasio went seven strong innings, yet it was Blackmon who stole the show, going 6 for 6 with three doubles and a homer in the Rockies' 12-2 win.
Blackmon drove in five runs and scored four, becoming the first Rockies player with six hits since Andres Galarraga did it against Houston on July 3, 1995.
"I don't think I ever hit 6 for 6 in my life," said Carlos Gonzalez. "I'm happy for him. He's proving to everybody he deserves to be in the big leagues and every day in the lineup."
Michael Cuddyer was 3 for 5 to improve to 10 for 22 on the season with multiple hits in four games. Gonzalez has also hit safely in all five contests after going 2 for 4 on Friday with his second homer of the season and four RBIs.
Jorge De La Rosa will try to bounce back Saturday after a rough debut. He gave up five runs and four hits over 4 1-3 innings in Monday's 10-1 loss to the Marlins.
"I did my best today, but I lost my focus," De La Rosa, who had only given up a solo homer in the first four innings before unraveling in the fifth, told the team's official website.
De La Rosa has been solid against Arizona, going 8-4 with a 2.30 ERA over his last 14 matchups.
The Diamondbacks (1-6) had won 12 of 17 against Colorado (2-3) prior to Friday's loss, which saw them match their worst seven-game start from their inaugural season in 1998. They opened that season 2-13 en route to finishing 65-97.
Friday marked the fourth game in which they've allowed at least seven runs. Randall Delgado surrendered six in just four innings, while the bullpen gave up two runs apiece in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Arizona's relievers have allowed 16 earned runs in 25 innings after not allowing a 16th earned run until the 19th game in 2013.
Brandon McCarthy will try to stop the bleeding following a mediocre showing in his first outing. He didn't record a decision after allowing five runs and six hits over 6 2-3 innings of Monday's 9-8 loss to San Francisco.
He went 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts versus Colorado last season.
Arizona's lone runs Friday came courtesy of a solo homer from Mark Trumbo - his third of the season - and an infield single in the eighth by Paul Goldschmidt, who extended his hitting streak to 26 games dating to last season. Goldschmidt is four games shy of the franchise record set by Luis Gonzalez from April 11-May 18, 1999.
Trumbo didn't hit his third home run last season until his 22nd game.
