| |  | NY YANKEES: HITTING: Despite his decline from mediocrity into downright counter-productivity, SS DEREK JETER gets to hit atop the best lineup in baseball. Off an MVP-caliber season, OF CURTIS GRANDERSON is a true star. His average is mediocre, but his power is elite and the Yankees are letting him run when on base. After two years with a sub-.260 average, 1B MARK TEIXEIRA's talent seems to be fading. He still puts up huge power numbers playing in a bandbox. Coming off knee and thumb injuries, 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ is a serious injury risk hitting in the middle of this lineup. 2B ROBINSON CANO will once again see as many RBI chances as anyone. He's been great in those situations the past two seasons. OFs NICK SWISHER and BRETT GARDNER offer power and SBs, respectively, though the Yankees may look to upgrade if they continue to post lackluster numbers. C RUSSELL MARTIN will get plenty of playing time now that Jesus Montero is in Seattle. Veteran slugger RAUL IBANEZ is the new DH in town, and will love hitting towards the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium.
STARTING PITCHING: CC SABATHIA struggled late last year and has logged a ridiculous number of innings over the past five years. He's a top-10 starter in the majors, but is starting to pass his prime. Newcomers HIROKI KURODA and MICHAEL PINEDA will both stabilize what was a shaky rotation last year. Kuroda, 37, posted a 3.07 ERA with the Dodgers and the 23-year-old Pineda has unlimited upside, fanning 173 batters in 171 innings with Seattle last season. IVAN NOVA benefitted from nearly nine runs of support per game. He keeps the ball down often enough to thrive in the Bronx, just without many strikeouts. PHIL HUGHES' stuff has regressed greatly since his days as a top prospect. He's trying to overcome conditioning problems this offseason. MANNY BANUELOS and DELLIN BETANCES are great prospects who may get a chance to start MLB games later this season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Trust MARIANO RIVERA to stay dominant until proven wrong. He was better in 2011 than he was in 2010 despite some velocity slippage. DAVID ROBERTSON has a firm hold on eighth-inning duties after an All-Star season. He's second in line for saves. RAFAEL SORIANO wasn't a total bust, as he did just fine after a rough April. He's settled into the seventh-inning role since Robertson is more trusted that he is. After Tommy John surgery, JOBA CHAMBERLAIN is aiming to be back this June. Middle reliever CORY WADE was reliable last year, and has a chance to rack up some vulture wins if he keeps going strong. | | COLORADO: HITTING: This offense still has trouble scoring outside of Coors Field, posting the second-fewest road runs in the majors (3.65 per game). SS TROY TULOWITZKI doesn't need the thin air though, posting an .881 OPS on the road. He led Colorado with a .302 BA, 30 HR, 105 RBI. OF CARLOS GONZALEZ was bothered by wrist and back injuries last year, but still managed to smack 26 homers with 92 RBI and 92 runs. OF DEXTER FOWLER will bat first or second after a strong .363 OBP. He could score 100 runs if he improved his base stealing (12 SB, 9 CS). OF MICHAEL CUDDYER gets the Coors Field Bump, while TYLER COLVIN settles into the 4th-OF role. Colorado has question marks with its corner infielders. 1B TODD HELTON is 38 with a bad back, and mediocre 3B CHRIS NELSON will start until top prospect NOLAN ARENADO is ready for the big leagues. 2B MARCO SCUTARO carries a louder stick than most two-baggers and C RAMON HERNANDEZ (.788 OPS) is an upgrade over the departed Chris Iannetta.
STARTING PITCHING: There are plenty of question marks in Colorado's rotation with Ubaldo Jimenez pitching in the AL and two of its top three starters coming off major injuries. JORGE DE LA ROSA had Tommy John surgery and won't likely return to a big-league mound until June. De La Rosa had a 1.19 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 59 innings before his injury. JHOULYS CHACIN will be counted on as the rotation's ace and he certainly has the physical tools and array of pitches to live up to this billing if he can trim his 87 walks in 194 innings. Former Baltimore 'ace' JEREMY GUTRHIE threw for 200+ innings in each of his past three seasons, but he's also served up 86 gopher balls in this span. That's not a good sign of things to come in the thin air. JUAN NICASIO took a line drive off the head and broke his C-1 vertebrae in August, but the team amazingly expects him to ready when the season begins. The 25-year-old has great command for such a young hurler. GUILLERMO MOSCOCO fared pretty well as a starter with the A's last year (.209 Opp. BA), but his 4.70 road ERA nearly doubled his 2.42 ERA in Oakland . Lefty DREW POMERANZ, 23, has a wealthy array of pitches and performed admirably in three of his four starts after being called up last season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Although he was the team's main set-up man last year, RAFAEL BETANCOURT becomes the Rockies closer with Huston Street out of the picture. After struggling at Coors Field in 2010 (4.99 ERA, 7 HR), he thrived in the thin air last year with a 1.93 ERA, and just 1 HR allowed in 32.2 innings. But he turns 37 in April and is one of the riskier saves men with little closing experience in his career. MATT BELISLE figures to be next in line for saves, notching 70 K and 16 BB at Coors Field since 2010. MATT REYNOLDS is the top lefty in the pen, but his 2011 season was nothing to write home about (4.09 ERA, 10 HR allowed in 50.2 IP). |

Joe Girardi was pleased with the New York Yankees' recent homestand, but their upcoming travels appear more challenging.
New York opens its eight-game trip Tuesday night against the Colorado Rockies, who will try to recapture their knack for timely hits.
The Yankees (18-12) started a 10-game homestand with four wins before splitting the last six games, including a 5-4 loss to the Athletics on Sunday.
"You get a long homestand and you have to take advantage of it, and I thought we did a good job," Girardi said.
While the first seven of those games came against struggling Toronto and Houston, the treks to Colorado, Kansas City and Cleveland pit them against opponents who have been considerably better in the first five weeks.
The Rockies (18-13), though, have cooled since their 13-4 start, falling for the ninth time in 14 games with Sunday's 8-3 loss to Tampa Bay. Their production came only from solo homers by Troy Tulowitzki, Michael Cuddyer and Nolan Arenado.
Colorado was 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position, just the third time they've gone hitless in such situations this season but the second time in three games. The Rockies have been one of baseball's best teams with a .282 average with runners in scoring position.
"We struggled with runners in scoring position," said manager Walt Weiss, who played with Girardi for two seasons in Colorado. "We hit some home runs, but if nobody hits with runners in scoring position, it's tough."
New York starter Hiroki Kuroda (4-1, 2.25 ERA) has developed a dangerous habit of allowing runners early, but has remained mostly unscathed. He's 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in his last four outings, though the first inning in particular continues to be a high-wire act for the right-hander.
Hitters own a .500 on-base percentage against Kuroda in the first, when he's allowed six of his nine runs this season. He needed 67 pitches to get through the first three frames against Houston last Tuesday, but finished with seven shutout innings and a season-high eight strikeouts in a 7-4 victory.
"You have to be pretty good to stick around to make it through those first three innings and then be good enough to give your team seven innings," Girardi said.
The Rockies will counter with Jorge De La Rosa (2-3, 4.18), who is coming off his worst outing. De La Rosa gave up six runs, 11 hits and two walks over four innings in a 6-2 loss to the Dodgers last Tuesday.
He went six innings in each of his previous four starts, posting a 1.88 ERA.
"I feel bad for the bullpen," De La Rosa told the team's official website. "I'm going to forget this and be ready for the next one."
The left-hander has thrown a combined 11 scoreless innings over two winning starts against the Yankees in his career, but the latest came on July 26, 2007. Travis Hafner is 2 for 9 against him but both hits were home runs.
Kuroda hasn't fared well against Colorado, posting a 1-5 record with a 5.52 ERA. Carlos Gonzalez is 6 for 15 off Kuroda but Tulowitzki is 6 for 28 - though the shortstop is 8 for 21 with two homers in six games against New York.
The Yankees own a 7-5 edge in the series but were swept the last time they visited Colorado, June 19-21, 2007.
